Women drink drivers on the increase - Independent
Extract:
"The number of women found guilty of drink or drug driving has risen by almost 60% since 1995, figures obtained by Liberal Democrats showed today.
The research shows a 58 per cent increase in women of all ages from 6,793 in 1995 to 10,765 in 2004 - a rise of 3,972 - compared with a slight fall among men.
There has also been an increase of almost 50 per cent in women aged under 30 from 2,636 to 3,863 over the period, an increase of 1,227 or 47 per cent.
This compared with 85,693 in 1995 for men of all ages and 37,226 for under 30s.
Those figures were 85,473 and 38,700 respectively in 2004, showing a drop of 220 or 0.25 per cent among men of all ages and a rise of 1,474 or 4 per cent for under 30s.
The figures apply to England and Wales.
Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Alistair Carmichael said: "Instead of focusing drink driving campaigns only on men, these figures show women also need to be targeted."
