I've just checked the comments on that list article. Surprisingly nobody had mentioned salt. Surely this is the most common and deadly additive. Combined with sugar, these are the most ubiquitous, unnecessary additives in the world.
If you abide by the rule of never eat anything with added salt (and/or sugar), that would be the best starting point for a healthy diet, eliminating virtually all processed foods.
