Glaucoma could be early warning for Alzheimer's - Telegraph
Extract:
"Glaucoma affects 600,000 people in Britain, the vast majority of whom are over 40. Sufferers gradually lose their wider field of vision, often without noticing. Alzheimer's disease, which affects 420,000 people in Britain, is responsible for two-thirds of all dementia cases. Most people with Alzheimer's are over 65.
Because glaucoma tends to develop years earlier than Alzheimer's, it may provide a useful warning signal.
Dr Cordiero, a glaucoma specialist at the Western Eye Hospital in London, said there was increasing evidence of a link. She said: "Normally the incidence of glaucoma is 1.8 per cent, but one study found it was at least 25 per cent in an Alzheimer's population."
However she said more studies were needed, and emphasised that "this doesn't mean that everyone with Alzheimer's will develop glaucoma or vice versa. Glaucoma has a number of risk factors."
Glaucoma is traditionally attributed to increased pressure in the eye, known as intraocular pressure. Traditional treatments attempt to lower this pressure, with only limited success. People with normal pressure can also suffer from glaucoma, suggesting it is not the only cause."
