Save the planet - from doctors
Extract:
"Doctors are cardinal offenders, mainly because of the curious ritual of the international conference. Thousands of participants convene at some attractive venue to spend a couple of boring days listening to scientific presentations that, if of any merit, would soon be published anyhow.
And the score? Prof Julian Crane, of Otago University, did the calculations after attending the European Respiratory Society's 16th annual congress in Munich, along with a staggering 17,239 others. He inferred from the list of delegates their countries of origin and thus the "carbon cost" of attending the meeting. It worked out at 40 million kgs of carbon dioxide, which it would take 784,000 trees a year to absorb."
