RoC Complete Lift promised to give middle-aged women younger-looking skin. But the ASA says the claim is misleading.

Anti-wrinkle cream advert banned for misleading public
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"RoC Complete Lift promised to give middle-aged women younger-looking skin. The claim was backed up by a two-month clinical study.

But an independent expert found the study by Johnson and Johnson was flawed because it lacked objective measures, records and corroborating photography.

"We concluded the advert was misleading, " said the ASA, which banned the avert and warned the pharmaceutical giant to consult the Committee of Advertising Practice before making any more commercials.

The skin cream, which costs £17.99 for a 50ml tub, claimed to have a patented ingredient which was "clinically proven" to work in eight weeks. But members of the public complained at the small print which stated the product did not give a "physical lift.""

You can reduce your risk of wrinkles by avoiding salt and salty food and avoiding DIETING! - Insufficient food causes skin-thinning, and thin skin is more likely to wrinkle than firm skin. - And there is no need to diet to lose weight. - You can easily, safely and swiftly lose excess weight by cutting down on salt and salty food.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Colonic irrigation works, Body Detox Clinic insists...

Colonic irrigation works, clinic insists as watchdog bans advert - Guardian

Extract:

"An advert which claimed that colonic irrigation was capable of relieving the symptoms of 19 conditions including ME, psoriasis, bad breath and colitis has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority.

The claims were made in adverts in the Metro newspaper and regional press in the north-east by a Newcastle-based company, the Body Detox Clinic. The claims were dismissed by the ASA because the company could not provide "robust clinical evidence to support them".

The ASA's ruling means the company cannot repeat the claims in paid-for advertising. However, the company's website, which is not regulated by the ASA, was repeating the claims yesterday."

In the complete article, it appears that there was only one complaint about this to the Advertising Standards Authority. - Contrast the way this matter has been dealt with, with the way my complaint to the ASA was dealt with. - I emailed the ASA about adverts and claims made that reducing calorie intake/controlling calorie intake reduces weight in overweight people. - As with the Body Detox Clinic, these claims have no "robust clinical evidence to support them". - On the contrary, there is very substantial evidence that these claims are completely false. - See the article in the British Medical Journal of November 2003
BMJ article for actual research on what happens when this advice is followed! - Over 800 obese adults were put on energy deficit diets, given diet sheets and plenty of instruction and help from trained staff, and apparently, visited fortnightly for a year, at the end of which they had GAINED weight! This mirrors the real experience of obese people, viz. - dieting makes you fat. - But the ASA is not taking any action about my complaint. - And yet it is far more serious; the misinformation being given/fraudulent claims being made by many advertisers, including government agencies - and I suppose some of the advertising is paid for - is harming millions of people, who try, unsuccessfully and damaging themselves in the process, to lose excess weight by calorie reduction, when all they need to do is to reduce salt intake and they will lose weight easily.

In OK! magazine pictures, Katie Price (Jordan) appears to be promoting infant formula milk rather than breastfeeding

Breast-feeding lobby criticises Jordan for infant formula 'stunt' - Independent on Sunday

Extract:

"Pictures of the model Katie Price, also known as Jordan, feeding her new baby Princess with infant formula during World Breastfeeding Week have angered the National Childbirth Trust, which has condemned OK! magazine for carrying the photos, which clearly show the model using SMA baby milk.

The next page of the magazine is given over to an advertisement for SMA formula designed for older infants. Wyeth, the pharmaceutical company that makes SMA, said it was merely a coincidence that the advert had appeared in the same edition as the photos of Jordan and her baby.

The NCT condemned the promotion as "appalling". Its chief executive, Belinda Phipps, said: "It is an extremely cynical way of getting round the ban on advertising infant formula."

The pro-breastfeeding group Baby Milk Action, which campaigns to inform mothers about the benefits of breast-feeding, plans to complain to the Advertising Standards Authority and Trading Standards about the advert, alleging that product placement is being used in order to get round a ban on promoting infant formula for babies under the age of six months."

Jordan possibly does not understand/realise the harm that formula milk causes to babies in poor countries. - As the article goes on to tell us:

"In developing countries, the World Health Organisation estimates that 1.5 million children die every year because they are not breast-fed, largely due to malnutrition and a lack of sterile water with which to prepare the formula."

But whether in poor or a rich country, here are many reasons why, if you are able to manage it, breastfeeding is best for your baby. Here is a reason you probably do not know about. - Human breast milk is very low in salt/sodium.

A low sodium intake at the beginning of a baby's life helps to protect the baby from becoming obese. The longer you continue to breastfeed, the better the protection from obesity and the stronger your baby's blood vessels will be. - six months would be good; longer still would be better still. - A low salt intake is best for mothers too...(o:
