Protection from the hair loss caused by chemotherapy

BBC News reports that using a scalp cooler can prevent much of the loss of hair that often results as a side-effect of cancer chemotherapy, and features the personal experience of Melanie Rowland, who said the results had been worth the five hours of painful icy cold, because her hair is very important to her.

You can reduce your risk of most cancers and most other degenerative diseases by
1) avoiding prescription drugs unless they are really necessary and
2) minimising your intake of salt/sodium and salty food
3) giving up dieting - permanently

Could hair cloning be a cure for baldness in a few years' time?

Hair cloning could provide cure for baldness

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Follicular cell implantation works by replicating remaining hair strands and has already shown positive results in continuing clinical trials on human beings. It could eventually help millions of people to regain a full head of their own hair.

The technique has been hailed as a major advance in hair restoration and is backed by a £1.9 million government grant.

It has the potential to re-grow a limitless supply hair for individuals who have become bald during cancer treatment, from suffering severe burns, or simply the onset of age.

Trial results presented at a conference of leading hair replacement surgeons in Rome suggested that the cell therapy can increase hair count in at least two thirds of patients after six months, and four out of five if the scalp is stimulated beforehand through gentle abrasions which encourage hair growth.

The procedure is being developed by Intercytex, a British company based in Manchester."

Hair loss can be slowed down by eating less salt and avoiding dieting. Insufficient food often causes hair loss.

A possible cure for Baldness?

Doctors 'close to cure for baldness' - Telegraph

Extract:

"Down the centuries, bald men have resorted to a range of desperate measures to restore their lost hair. Today, however, the first real hope of effective treatments is reported by an American team arising from research that could also lead to scar free surgery.

The scientists made the advance after identifying a mechanism that relies on reawakening dormant genes. A US company, Follica Inc, has now licensed the technology in the hope of developing new treatments for baldness. While adult mammals can repair injuries to themselves, they lack the ability to rebuild lost parts of their bodies - unlike newts and salamanders which can sprout limbs. Experts previously thought it was equally impossible for adult skin to regenerate hair follicles.

Now it seems adult mice can indeed regenerate hair follicles, according to a study published today by Dr George Cotsarelis of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, and colleagues in the journal Nature.

Rather than turning on stem cells, as thought, the method works by reactivating genes used during development of the embryo. If researchers can control hair growth, then they could potentially find cures for people with hair and scalp disorders, such as scarring alopecia where the skin scars, and there is hair overgrowth.

Wounding, they report, triggers new hair-producing follicles to form, a claim that was first made half a century ago after experiment on rabbits but which was written off as unconvincing. The new work shows the effect is real and a consequence of a molecular signal involving a protein called wnt. Following wounding, the signal increases the number of regenerated hair follicles.

By introducing more wnt, the researchers could make skin regenerate instead of just repair, doubling the number of new hair follicles. To show they were really on to something, the team also show that turning off wnt signalling prevents new follicles from forming."

Hair loss can be caused by dieting/'slimming' or any other form of inadequate nutrition. - If this is your experience, you can slow down your hair loss and get your hair into better condition by giving up dieting and making sure you eat plenty of good food. - Dieting does not work anyway, as you have doubtless found. - To lose excess weight safely, you need only to cut down on the amount of salt/sodium you eat.

And there is no need to take drugs, risking adverse side-effects, to lose weight. You can lose weight fast, easily and safely by cutting down on salt and salty food.

Are you a Steroid Victim? - Do you suffer from Steroid-Induced Cushing's Syndrome? - Then you are also "sensitive to salt". - Read on.

A personal note from me: - Almost all of the following side-effects are not side-effects of the drug itself; they are the effects of the doctor not observing the correct protocol for prescribing steroids: so they are the effects of being prescribed too high a dose and/or being prescribed it for too long a time and almost certainly because of not being adequately or appropriately monitored while taking the drug - and CRUCIALLY of not being warned to avoid eating salt or food containing added salt while taking the medication, because these drugs cause sodium retention and sensitivity to salt, which can lead to massive fluid retention and morbid obesity. - i.e. the side-effects are the effects of MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE. - There are hundreds of thousands of steroid victims the world over - victims of medical negligence on a VAST scale...)o:

The following list of side effects that steroid victims suffer from is taken from one of the webpages of the Steroid Warning Network

LIST OF SOME STEROID SIDE EFFECTS

WEIGHT GAIN
HYPERTENSION
SKIN ATROPHY (wasting away)
MYOPATHY (muscle disease/weakness)
IMPAIRED WOUND HEALING
POST TRAUMATIC (after-shock) STRESS (anxiety, fear)
SUPPRESSION (lowering) OF IMMUNE RESPONSE (defense of body against virus, bacteria)
SUBCUTANEOUS (under skin) TISSUE ATROPHY (decrease)
MOOD SWINGS (ranging from Euphoria to Suicidal thoughts)
STEROID PSYCHOSIS (including Hallucinations, Mania, Delusions)
SKIN INFECTIONS
DEPRESSION
HAIR LOSS
EXCESSIVE FACIAL HAIR GROWTH
INGROWN HAIRS
ARTHRITIS
CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE
OSTEOPOROSIS
CONTACT DERMATITIS
ACNE, ECZEMACYSTS, RASHES
LESIONS, BLISTERS
OPEN-ANGLED GLAUCOMA
FATIGUE
CATARACTS
MENSTRUAL IRREGULARITIES
PREMATURE MENOPAUSE
SECONDARY DIABETES MELLITUS
SLEEP DISORDERS
WATER RETENTION
GROWTH RETARDATION IN CHILDREN
CUSHING'S SYNDROME (affects almost every system in the body; moonface, humpback, central obesity, chronic fatigue and other symptoms)
STEROID INDUCED ASTHMA
HEADACHES
SHAKINESS AND TREMORS
EASY BRUISING
ADHESIVE ARACHNOIDITIS (from Epidural Steroid Injections)
NECROSIS (a localized death of tissue)
OSTEONECROSIS
INCREASED SUSCEPTIBILITY TO INFECTION
REDISTRIBUTION OF BODY FAT
INCREASE IN CIRCULATING BLOOD FATS (Triglycerides)
TOXIC SHOCK
MUSCLE CRAMPING, JOINT PAIN

A person with steroid-induced Cushing Syndrome suffers from the symptoms of BOTH CUSHINGS and the Systemic effects from the STEROIDS. Cushing's syndrome can take years to recover from. Many of the devastating effects from steroids are permanent and life-threatening.

I am a steroid victim. - I am trying to put an end to the medical negligence that results in more and more steroid victims, and gives damaging advice to the existing steroid victims. - I need my MP to visit me because I am too ill and too disabled to go to see him at his surgery. - He came to see me nearly two years ago but did not understand about the problems of steroid victims because he had not read the information I had sent to him. He does not seem to intend visiting me again despite my many requests to him to do so.

If you would like to help me in my mission to prevent/reduce great and needless suffering you might like to write to my MP, Nick Clegg, at nickclegg@sheffieldhallam.org.uk asking him to visit me, Margaret Wilde, as soon as possible and not be in a rush as he was when he came before.
