London restaurant chain now puts calorie information on its menus

Read the article in the Telegraph. It seems a pity to me to go to the trouble and expense of providing this information, because counting calories and cutting down on calories is not a good way to try to lose excess weight. It doesn't work and it can harm your health if you eat insufficient calories for your body's needs.

The most effective, safe and fastest way to lose excess weight is seriously to cut down on salt and salty food. Now, if restaurants would provide information about the salt/sodium content of the meals they serve that really would be useful...(o: - Better still, if they would reduce the salt content of their meals...

Who benefits from diets and dieting?

Well, the dieting industry benefits, you will agree:
the manufacturers of diet foods and diet drinks,
the authors of diet books,
the women's magazines that publish the latest diets,
the newspapers that do similarly,
the slimming clubs.
I'm sure you can think of others to add to these I have listed.

Who doesn't benefit from diets and dieting? - Sadly, the people who do not benefit from dieting are overweight and obese people who want to get rid of excess weight, because in practice, dieting is far more likely to cause an increase in weight than it is to reduce obesity. - If you are obese and you have already tried to lose excess weight by dieting you will have experienced for yourself that what I say is true. - DIETS DO NOT WORK.

The safe, fast way to lose excess weight is to reduce the amount of added salt/sodium you eat. This means cutting down on salt, not cutting down on calories or cutting down on food.

See how to lose weight by eating less salt. And see salt/sodium in foods.

Calorie counting nonsense and calorie restriction advice are propaganda/misinformation. You do not have to believe propaganda. Recognise it and confront it for what it is. - If your personal experience proves that low calorie diets do not work and that they make you hungry, tired, cold and depressed then accept that proof. It is called empirical proof. - 'Empirical' means derived from experiment and observation rather than theory.

The theory about low calorie diets is based on arithmetic; it is not based on what happens to real people who try to reduce their obesity by testing out the theory: those real people who become cold and tired and hungry and feel weak and faint, and catch colds, etc. easily because the dieting has lowered their immunity to infection.

If you follow my suggestions of giving up the calorie game and instead eat real food and don't go hungry, and avoid salt and salty food (that means mainly avoiding ready meals, takeaways and processed food as these are usually high in salt and pretty low in nutrition) - if you follow these suggestions you will not feel cold or tired or hungry or depressed. - Instead you feel very much better. You will have more energy. You will have excreted some of the excess fluid that has been held in your body - held there by the added salt in your food - fluid retention weighing you down. Your health will benefit in a multitude of ways. You will enjoy your life so much more and you will not be sacrificing your life and health and happiness to the dieting industry and the food industry and all the other guys who profit from the usual dieting propaganda. - And you will lose weight...(o:

Low-calorie diet drinks (usually sickly sweet with dodgy sweeteners and other chemical additives that would be better staying in the lab than entering the human body) don't make fat people slim, and low-calorie diet meals (usually low-fat, salty junk) don't make fat people slim.

So why does the dieting industry sell us this false propaganda and non-nutritious diet meals and diet drinks which don't work? - Well I hope that it is obvious when you think about it: they don't actually want fat people to become slim and fit. - They need fat people to keep buying their products - cheaply produced out of low-cost ingredients, dearly bought at the cost of the health and happiness of the consumer. If diet products did what they promise to do, the dieting industry would go out of business.

Experts are now advising that the daily intake of calories should be increased by 16%

BBC News reports change in calorie intake advice. Apparently the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition is now advising that the daily intake of calories should be increased by 16%, but that this increase in calories in should be accompanied by increasing exercise, i.e. calories out. - If you think that this advice sounds amazingly like maintaining the status quo, then you and I are in agreement.

Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, ever-ready with an ill-judged comment laced with prejudice against a stereotype of overweight people, said it was a "dangerous assumption" to say that adults could safely consume an extra 400 calories a day. What nonsense! Slim people regularly eat far in excess of the recommended daily calorie allowance and never gain weight.

I say again that excess calorie consumption is not what is causing increasing numbers of overweight and obese people. The cause is fluid retention/salt sensitivity, occasioned mainly by
1) prescription drugs that weaken blood vessel walls and impair kidney function,
2) salt-laden processed foods and
3) dangerously ill-informed advice from doctors, nutritionists and the dieting industry.

Avoiding salt and salty food is the SAFE, healthy, natural, effective, RAPID way to lose weight!

Restaurants, sandwich chains and coffee shops will soon start to display calorie counts on their menus in a misguided attempt to fight UK's obesity.

Restaurants to display calorie counts on menus to help obesity crisis
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Within the next six months many well known chains, including Pizza Hut and Pret a Manger, will start to prominently display the calorie content of all of its food.

The idea is being pushed by the Food Standards Agency, the Government's food regulator, which wants all outlets from fish and chip shops to Michelin-starred restaurants to give details of what is in their meals.

If it is a success, the FSA is considering going even further by asking restaurants to publish so-called 'traffic light' labels on their menus, which would highlight in red if a dish was too salty, sugary or fatty."

Knowledge of calorie content will not help anyone to become less obese. Providing this information will be just another colossal waste of time and money. - To lose excess weight it is helpful to know the salt/sodium content, not the calories.

Obesity is not caused by eating fat or sugar or too many calories. Nor is it caused by inactivity/laziness. It is caused by weakened veins leading to fluid retention in the bloodstream, i.e. sodium retention and water/fluid retention, and thereby to excess weight/obesity.

The way to reduce/prevent obesity is to avoid salt and salty food, and to avoid prescription drugs as far as possible because these are a major cause of the the blood vessel damage that precedes the salt sensitivity/fluid retention.

Why not help with disseminating the truth? - If you have any friends who are overweight and know from experience that dieting does not work, tell them about my blog or send them a link to my website. - Better still, tell your MP about my website. - I'm afraid my own MP is as much use as a chocolate teapot...)o:

Fat people keep dieting, counting calories, cutting out fat, going hungry - yet obesity is increasing. - These measures do not work! - Read on...

Obesity is not caused by over-eating. - You know you see lots of slim people eating like there's no tomorrow and they don't put weight on so clearly eating too much is not the cause of the 'obesity epidemic'.

Obesity is caused by a combination of salt sensitivity and salt intake. - Only people who are sensitive to salt become fat/overweight/obese. This happens because for them, salt is very harmful: it holds excess water in their bodies. This is often called fluid retention or oedema. The veins swell and the skin gets thinner as it stretches to accommodate the swollen veins.

Reducing calories does not help with these problems. It is irrelevant to them. - Reducing salt is what helps. - By eating less salt and salty food you can easily and swiftly lose some of the excess water and thus lose weight - a lot of weight, since water is heavy. - Remember the mnemonic:

'A pint of pure water
Weighs a pound and a quarter.'

Los Angeles bans new fast food outlets and California outlaws trans-fats

Los Angeles bans new fast food outlets and California outlaws trans-fats
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"On Friday night, California became the first state to prohibit the use of artery-clogging trans-fats in all its restaurants and bakeries, in legislation signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Planners in America's second largest city have backed an unprecedented moratorium on the opening of new outlets of chains such as Burger King and KFC in South Los Angeles, in an attempt to impose better eating habits on the area's mainly black and Hispanic population.

The restriction is the most recent example of local leaders across America seeking to impose a healthier lifestyle on residents to counter soaring obesity rates.

Last week in New York, health inspectors began to fine restaurant chains that fail to display prominently the calorie counts of their offerings.

Some major fast food franchises, which are backing a legal challenge against the regulation, reluctantly began to post the often alarming calorific breakdowns just one day before the new regime of fines took effect.

In Los Angeles the full council is expected on Tuesday to approve the restrictions across a 32 square-mile area of the city, where fast-food eateries currently make up 45 per cent of restaurants.

Officials have received inquiries from other American cities which are considering adopting a similar law. But the California Restaurant Association condemned the move as "damaging, misleading, uncalled for and bad for business".

The state, often a trailblazer on nutritional issues, is also ordering the phasing-out of trans-fats, a synthetic product linked to heart disease, from its 88,000 restaurants by 2010 and other food outlets such as bakeries by 2011.

"Today we are taking a strong step towards creating a healthier future for California," said Gov Schwarzenegger. New York was the first city to ban trans-fats from its restaurants and Boston and Baltimore have voted to follow suit.

New York's calorie count initiative is also being copied. San Francisco plans to implement the same rules later this year, in the face of opposition from the restaurant industry which plans court actions to try to block the move.

Health inspectors issued 277 "violation notices" to chains with outlets that failed to display the calorie information during an initial 10-week grace period in New York. Last night officials could not yet say how many actual fines - of up to $2,000 - had been levied since last weekend.

Already the new law has led to shocking discoveries by customers, including 630-calorie muffins, 1,300-calorie salads and a 2,000-calorie "Bloomin' Onion" appetiser - only just short of the recommended government calorie intake for an American adult for a day."

Well I'm sure trans-fats are food baddies and I'm well in favour of banning them, but the widespread belief that reducing calories will reduce obesity is absolutely wrong.

To reduce obesity it is necessary to reduce salt/sodium intake, not calories. Restaurants should be required to display the salt content of the food they provide, rather than the calories.

The fattest people - the morbidly obese - are usually the victims of prescribed drugs that cause sodium and water retention. Doctors prescribe these drugs far too readily/carelessly/recklessly, often in high dose, and without the important warning that while taking them the patient should avoid eating salt of salty food.

The Duchess of York in Hull TV programmes. Also the Slimfast advert during the commercial break.

I watched both of the programmes on ITV1 about the Duchess of York trying to help an overweight, disadvantaged family living on the Preston Road Estate in Hull. I must say my opinion of the duchess rose considerably as a result of seeing these programmes. She was kind, friendly, understanding and helpful. Unlike many diet gurus, her manner was not at all patronising or bullying, and I think the family will have pleasant memories of their contact with her and so will continue to benefit from her sensible advice and ideas.

I was struck by one of the adverts during one of the commercial breaks - that for Slimfast. - There was the usual note on the screen about the product only helping with slimming if it is taken as part of a calories controlled diet...)o: - This is RUBBISH! - It is UNTRUE! - Calorie control/restriction/reduction/counting does not IN ANY WAY assist with losing excess weight.

The ONLY way to reduce excess weight is to reduce fluid retention, which is the cause of excess weight. - This means in practice reducing salt/sodium intake and/or increasing intake of potassium-rich foods such as fruit and fresh vegetables.

I wrote to the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) years ago about this calorie-controlled diet advice, which is so widespread. The ASA is supposed to ensure that adverts are "legal, decent, honest and truthful." - Well these calorie claims are not true; they are misleading and damaging. To lose excess weight, calorie reduction is unnecessary, counter-productive and harmful, and furthermore, there has never been a shred of evidence to support the claims made about calorie reduction, nor have the claims ever even been put to the test... - But the ASA has never done anything about these fraudulent claims... - So, in my opinion, the ASA is pretty useless...)o:

Salty food causes fluid retention/weight gain/obesity in people who are sensitive to salt, so for overweight people to lose weight they need to avoid eating salt and salty food.

I watched the first part of tonight's "The Diets That Time Forgot". - What nonsense the programme is!

I couldn't bear to watch more than the first part of the programme - about a quarter of an hour, I suppose. - What nonsense! - What a lousy programme!

Some of the 9 volunteers are trying to lose weight by eating mostly meat. Some are eating what they like but chewing each mouthful 32 times. And some are eating a calorie-controlled diet.

Well a diet that is mostly meat is clearly not a healthy diet. Our bodies do best on a varied food intake, not just animal protein, and including plenty of fruit and vegetables.

And chewing each mouthful 32 times is plain silly.

And there is a wealth of evidence that reducing/restricting/counting calories does not in itself produce weight loss in overweight people. - In fact, weight gain is far more common than weight loss on a calorie reduction diet. Hunger does not make fat people slimmer; it makes them tired, cold and miserable.

The only way that fat people can safely reduce their weight by what they eat, is by eating less salt/sodium and/or more potassium. This reduces fluid retention, the cause of obesity, and to some extent reduces fat retention. - That means in practice, avoiding salt and salty food and making sure you eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Additionally, if fat retention still is a problem, then extra dairy calcium will help to remove this in the faeces and so further weight is lost.

If the volunteers on this silly programme do lose any weight then it will be because they have eaten less salt and/or more fruit and vegetables and/or more dairy calcium.

It's a shame and a pity that neither ITV nor the BBC ever have a programme with TYPICAL overweight subjects trying to lose weight. - These will be people who keep their appetite in check, keep their calories down, often go hungry and try to take exercise even though they are tired.

Ideally, they would be instructed NOT to go hungry and encouraged to eat far more calories than they have been eating - even TWICE AS MANY - BUT NOT TO EAT ANY SALT OR ANY FOOD THAT HAS HAD SALT ADDED TO IT. AND TO EAT PLENTY OF FRUIT AND UNSALTED VEGETABLES AND PLENTY OF FULL CREAM MILK AND DAIRY YOGURT.

And no diet junk AT ALL, and as far as possible, no weird food additives - just fresh food, not processed stuff.

THEY WOULD LOSE WEIGHT FAST AND SAFELY.

DIETING IS NOT THE WAY TO SLIMNESS OR TO HEALTH.

Obesity is caused by fluid retention, not by gluttony, and is reduced not by dieting and exercise, but by eating less salt.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Britain: one in three primary-school leavers is overweight, - The cause of obesity in children is misinformation by the 'experts'.

One in three primary-school leavers overweight - Telegraph

Extracts:

1) "One in three children leaving primary school in some parts of Britain are overweight, it has emerged.

New figures released by the Department of Health have also shown that one quarter of children are already obese when they start school before the age of five.

The statistics form part of a nationwide survey of children’s weight which is currently being carried out by the Government.

Figures released by 10 primary care trusts under the Freedom of Information Act have prompted experts to fear that the obesity epidemic has been grossly underestimated.

The findings suggest the Government may not meet its target of stopping the increase in obesity among under-11s by 2010. "

2) "The research comes as a poll for high-street supermarket Sainsbury’s found that weight-conscious teenage girls are not eating enough calories for their age group.

It revealed just over a third of 13 to 18-year-old girls are on diets or have dieted recently and 45 per cent eat less than 1,200 calories per day, which is below the recommended intake.

Only 14 per cent of the teenaged boys surveyed admitted to dieting but a quarter consumed fewer than 800 calories per day - as little as one third of their recommended daily amount."

The second extract provides the explanation for this increasing problem of obesity - namely the continued incorrect advice that 'experts' give about how to reduce obesity. The advice is based on the assumption - unsupported by scientific evidence - that obesity is caused by overeating and can be remedied by eating less, i.e. dieting. - This is catastrophically harmful advice because, as you have just read, it leads to obese people eating insufficient food - particularly damaging to children.

In fact, obesity is caused not by overeating, but by fluid retention, and fluid retention is exacerbated by 'slimming'/dieting...

To reduce fluid retention, and thereby reduce excess weight/obesity, it is necessary to cut down on salt/sodium intake. Eating plenty of fruit and unsalted vegetables makes weight loss faster, because these are foods rich in potassium, and potassium helps to remove sodium and the water that accompanies it from the body - by way of the urine.

'Debate' about obesity: opposing views given, but neither side realises that salt sensitivity/sodium retention/fluid retention explain the conundrum.

Size matters: The Great British weight debate - Independent on Sunday

Yet another article about obesity which wrongly assumes overeating to be the cause of the rising incidence of obesity...)o:

All that is necessary to curb the growing incidence of obesity is to tell the truth about what causes it! - Obesity is NOT caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, frequently the result of taking prescribed medications, especially steroids such as prednisolone, prednisone and HRT, and anti-depressants such as amitriptyline. Obesity can be easily reduced by seriously reducing your salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. - It is important not to restrict calories. - 'Slimming' is unnecessary, ineffective and often harmful.

The conventional 'wisdom' and advice about obesity is wrong.

There is no evidence to support the calorie theory about obesity. - And reducing calories does not reduce obesity. - Reducing salt intake DOES reduce obesity.

Calorie counting and advice about increasing exercise and reducing fat and carbohydrate intake to reduce obesity are ineffective, counter-productive and often damaging. - See the article in the British Medical Journal of November 2003 BMJ article for actual research on what happens when this advice is followed! - Over 800 obese adults were put on energy deficit diets, given diet sheets and plenty of instruction and help from trained staff, and apparently, visited fortnightly for a year, at the end of which they had GAINED weight! This mirrors the real experience of obese people, viz. - dieting makes you fat.

It is commonly accepted now, except by the 'experts', that less than 5% of dieters actually lose weight, and most gain weight as a result of dieting. - Even the ones who manage to lose weight do not usually improve their health. - See Guardian article for a report in The Guardian of Monday, June 27th 2005. It is about a huge research study of nearly 3000 people over a period of 18 years. The study found that overweight people who diet to reach a healthier weight are more likely to die young than those who remain fat. It also found that dieting causes physiological damage that in the long term can outweigh the benefits of the weight loss.

The latest diet advice: don't hang around with fat people. - What nonsense!

The latest diet advice: don't hang around with fat people - Independent.

Extract:

"Nicholas Christakis, professor of healthcare policy at Harvard Medical School and co-author of the study, said: "What appears to be happening is that a person becoming obese most likely causes a change of norms about what counts as an appropriate body size.

"People come to think that it is OK to be bigger since those around them are bigger, and this sensibility spreads."

James Fowler, an expert in social networks at the University of California and a co-author, said: "This is about people's ideas about their bodies and their health. Consciously or unconsciously, people look to others when they are deciding how much to eat, how much to exercise and how much weight is too much."

"Social effects are much stronger than people realise. There has been intensive effort to find genes responsible for obesity and physical processes responsible, but what our paper suggests is that you really should spend time looking at the social side as well.""

This 'research' is nonsense!

Obesity is not caused by overeating; it is caused by fluid retention. It is easily and rapidly lessened by reducing sodium intake. Calorie counting and advice about increasing exercise and reducing fat intake to reduce obesity are ineffective, counter-productive and often damaging. - See the article in the British Medical Journal of November 2003 for actual research on what happens when this advice is followed! - Over 800 obese adults were put on energy deficit diets, given diet sheets and plenty of instruction and help from trained staff, and apparently, visited fortnightly for a year, at the end of which they had GAINED weight! It also found that dieting causes physiological damage that in the long term can outweigh the benefits of the weight loss.

Contributing to the increase in obesity we have the widespread prescribing of steroids like prednisolone and prednisone, HRT, tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline, and other drugs which cause fluid retention and therefore weight gain, and the failure of doctors to adhere to the protocols connected with the prescribing and monitoring of steroids. But pre-eminent, in my opinion, is the catastrophically damaging calorie-reduction advice that continues to be given despite such a wealth of evidence that it is bad advice.

Deny surgery to obese people, says poll.

Deny surgery to obese, says poll - Guardian

This would be very wrong - very, very unjust - because obesity is not caused by overeating!

Here is an extract from my 'political' page. - I urge you to read ALL the page, right to the end. - You will then have a good idea of where the responsibility/blame lies for the present 'obesity epidemic'; it lies squarely with the professions who are extremely highly paid precisely to prevent this sort of health catastrophe - medics, politicians, etc.

"Calorie counting and advice about increasing exercise and reducing fat and carbohydrate intake to reduce obesity are ineffective, counter-productive and often damaging. The study found that overweight people who diet to reach a healthier weight are more likely to die young than those who remain fat. It also found that dieting causes physiological damage that in the long term can outweigh the benefits of the weight loss.

Contributing to the increase in obesity we have the widespread prescribing of steroids and HRT and other drugs which cause weight gain, and the failure of doctors to adhere to the protocols connected with the prescribing and monitoring of steroids. But pre-eminent, in my opinion, is the catastrophically damaging calorie-reduction advice that continues to be given despite such a wealth of evidence that it is bad advice.

Another possible factor is the increase in the amount of oestrogen in the water table.

Salt produces obesity only in vulnerable people, i.e.

1. People whose veins are weak because of immaturity (babies, children).

2. People whose veins are weak because of steroids, HRT, amitriptyline or certain other prescribed drugs, too readily prescribed, often in very high dose.

3. People whose natural hormone levels are abnormally high (pregnant women, PMT sufferers).

4. 'Slimmers' - People whose blood vessel walls have been weakened by 'slimming' - i.e. eating insufficient food.

Most medics do not understand what sodium retention is, and most are unaware that tablets they prescribe are causing this extremely damaging condition. They tend to blame obesity, mistakenly, on overeating. Similarly, most nutritionists and dieticians do not realise that obese people need to lose excess water to lose weight, and that excess water held in the body will not be affected by cutting calories. There can scarcely be anyone who has not heard hundreds of times over the message that overweight people should cut calories and cut down on fat and sugar. They have been conditioned to believe this. They do not need to be told it another thousand times. The advice from the nutritionists is WRONG. It does not work! This nation HAS reduced its intake of fat and sugar for some years now. With what result? Ever increasing obesity levels! Obese people need to concentrate on reducing salt, not calories.

Since the summer of 2001 I have been writing to MPs, to medical people, to journalists, to nutritionists and others, urging that suitable warnings be printed on packs of the tablets so that the destruction of more lives can be prevented. I have written hundreds of letters. The warning label should say something like:

DO NOT EAT SALT, OR FOODS CONTAINING SALT, WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION, BECAUSE IT COULD CAUSE FLUID RETENTION RESULTING IN MASSIVE WEIGHT GAIN.

To the best of my knowledge, no action has been taken. Nor is the public being told the truth about weight gain and weight loss. The best way to lose weight is to concentrate on eating less sodium and more potassium. (A book, written a few years ago by a hospital professor, about the health dangers of salt, makes no mention of steroid victims and specifically states, incorrectly, that HRT does not cause a salt problem!)"

Are you trying to stick to a low fat diet and finding it difficult and finding that it makes you feel low? - You are not alone!

I found this interesting webpage a few days ago - Anthony Colpo - Why the Low-Fat Diet is Stupid and Potentially Dangerous and I was pleased to find such sensible advice and that it is backed up by authoritative articles and scientific evidence.

Extract:

"For years Anthony Colpo has maintained
The Omnivore, a website bursting at the seams with articles and insights into studies and claims about being healthy - all with references to studies.

This week, Colpo penned "
Why the Low-Fat Diet is Stupid and Potentially Dangerous" - a lengthy and well referenced article about the null findings from the Women's Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial."

To lose weight you do not need to reduce fat intake or calorie intake. - You need only to reduce salt intake, because this reduces fluid retention, and it is fluid retention that causes obesity. - Dieting is unnecessary, ineffective and dangerous to health.

Snacking gene contributes to obesity - says Steve O'Rahilly, Professor of Biochemistry and Medicine at the University of Cambridge. - What drivel!

Snacking gene contributes to obesity

Extract:

"Steve O'Rahilly, Professor of Biochemistry and Medicine at the University of Cambridge, and one of the researchers who identified the abnormality, said: "The vast majority of these people have already been along the diet route. They have tried intense attempts to lose weight and it simply fails.

"They are fat for a reason. They have impaired ability to remain satiated between meals because they have a molecule that is broken in their brain — it does not transmit the signal that tells them when they are full.""

This is foolish nonsense!

Child obesity is almost always caused by eating salt and salty food. These fat children will grow up to be fat adults unless they stop eating salty food.

Adult obesity, in adults who were previously slim, is usually caused by salt sensitivity and fluid retention, exacerbated by the flawed 'expert' advice that calorie restriction is necessary in order to lose weight. You do NOT need to restrict calories to lose excess weight! - You need to eat less salt/sodium.

Salt sensitivity is often caused either by taking prescribed medications that cause sodium retention, and not being warned that while taking these drugs that they must avoid eating salt, or by pregnancy, and not being warned that while pregnant they must avoid eating salt.

Obesity is NOT caused by faulty genes that make people hungry between meals! - It is caused by 'experts' - like this professor - giving the wrong information.

All obesity, whether in children or adults, is accompanied by increased appetite/hunger - the reason for which should be glaringly obvious! - A bigger, heavier body requires more calories/energy to move it around and to service it. And a bigger body has a greater surface area from which to lose heat, so for this second reason also it requires extra calories.

And since all obesity uses up so many calories and also makes the body so ungainly and uncomfortable, obese people do not usually feel like taking much exercise. - Their inactivity is the consequence of the excess weight and not the cause of it.

The overeating/underactivity explanation for the cause of obesity, and all the associated explanations dependant upon it, are not supported by EVIDENCE. - The calorie myth is just that: a myth.

OBESITY IS CAUSED BY FLUID RETENTION, NOT BY OVEREATING AND/OR BY INACTIVITY. THE BEST, THE SAFEST, THE FASTEST WAY TO REDUCE OBESITY IS TO CUT DOWN DRASTICALLY ON SALT INTAKE, AND TO EAT PLENTY OF FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES - AND COMPLETELY ABANDON CALORIE RESTRICTION BECAUSE THIS IS A RED HERRING.

Here is an extract from my webpage http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/story.html:

"Calorie counting and advice about increasing exercise and reducing fat intake to reduce obesity are ineffective, counter-productive and often damaging.

Another possible factor is the increase in the amount of oestrogen in the water table."

All that is normally necessary to lose excess weight is to eat less salt, i.e. to reduce one's sodium intake, and to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Surge in obesity among children adds to Britain's growing band of diabetics. The Calorie Myth needs to be abandoned. Children need to eat less salt.

Surge in obesity among children adds to Britain's growing band of diabetics

Extract:

"The burden of diabetes is growing much faster than health planners anticipated because of the epidemic in obesity in Western countries, scientists say today."

"Diabetes can lead to many serious health problems, including heart disease, blindness and amputations. It occurs when the body cannot properly utilise sugar to provide energy. This results from either a lack of insulin — the hormone that controls sugar use — or because the effects of insulin are no longer felt."

The reasons for the surge in obesity - and therefore of diabetes and its attendant serious health problems - are explored on my webpage http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/story.html and may be briefly summarised as the failure to publicise the true causes of obesity and the best ways to reduce it.

Obesity is not caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, which in turn is usually caused by sodium retention. There is no evidence to support the calorie theory about obesity. - And reducing calories does not reduce obesity. - Reducing salt intake DOES reduce obesity. Excessive salt intake is the main cause of child obesity. - See http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/children.html

Calorie counting and advice about increasing exercise and reducing fat and carbohydrate intake to reduce obesity are ineffective, counter-productive and often damaging. - See the article in the British Medical Journal of November 2003

In one of its leading articles today, The Sunday Telegraph critically reviews ten years' political control of the NHS

Ten years of the wrong medicine

Extract:

"Take the issue of waiting times, of which the Government has made so much. Liam Halligan, our economics editor, reports today that his research has established that almost half of all hospital trusts admit to operating minimum waiting times for surgical procedures. Those minimum waiting times often turn out to be close to six months, the maximum the Government has said we will wait for in-patient treatment.

The minimum waiting times are not the result of a lack of capacity within the NHS. Surgeons are available to perform the procedures; nurses to help them and to provide post-operative care; and there are operating theatres on standby. Why then are patients in pain being kept waiting for six months for the procedures they need? Purely, it seems, for political reasons. The Health Secretary, Patricia Hewitt, has said she will resign if the NHS does not show a surplus by April 1, the end of the financial year. In the last quarter, the NHS ran up a deficit of £1.3 billion. In order to get the NHS into surplus and to keep Ms Hewitt in her post, surgeons and nurses are being kept idle and operating theatres left empty."

I agree completely with the argument and the tenor of this article, but I believe that there is a more fundamental problem at the heart of dealing with ill-health in this country - namely negligent prescribing practices by health professionals, and wrong assumptions and advice about the causes and treatment of obesity.

It is over 50 years since steroids were first prescribed and it is beyond belief that most doctors are still unaware in practice of their potential for causing sodium and water retention and morbid obesity and the many other serious health problems attendant on these - diabetes, hypertension, osteopenia, etc. and are still failing to warn patients to avoid eating salt while taking the medication.

Diet-mad Britain has become a nation of self-obsessed, yo-yo dieters who dream of transforming their lives in only seven days

Extract:

"Britain has become a nation of self-obsessed, yo-yo dieters who dream of transforming their lives in only seven days with the help of a hypnotist, according to a survey of the reading public.

Public library statistics show that it has taken only 10 years for improving titles such as Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time to be overtaken by television spin-offs and diet compendiums.

Books such as You Are What You Eat, by Gillian McKeith, the strident TV nutritionist, and the hypnotist Paul McKenna's Change Your Life in Seven Days, now top the non-fiction list."

Tomato diet model dies of anorexia

Tomato diet model dies of anorexia

What a pity! - A young woman's needless, avoidable death! - If only the truth were widely known about obesity and healthy 'dieting'! - To achieve a lower weight without compromising your health, just eat as little salt/sodium as possible and also make sure you are eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and enough of all the other essential food groups - protein, healthy fat and micronutrients. - That means not using salt in cooking, not sprinkling it on your food and checking the labels on the packets/tins of food you buy to make sure they contain only a low concentration of sodium. (0.5g sodium or more per 100g food is high sodium, 0.1g sodium or less is low sodium). Essentially, you are better avoiding processed food and instead eating fresh food that you cook yourself from scratch. - THERE IS NO NEED AT ALL TO RESTRICT THE AMOUNT OF FOOD YOU EAT OR THE NUMBER OF CALORIES. - IF YOU ARE HUNGRY, EAT! - AND DON'T TRY TO DECEIVE YOURSELF THAT YOU ARE NOT HUNGRY WHEN REALLY YOU ARE.
