If I lived in London I'd be buying milk from Selfridges.

If I lived in London I'd be buying milk from Selfridges. - That's because, as the Guardian reports here, they are selling raw milk, i.e. milk that has not been pasteurised. Unfortunately, the Food Standards Agency is trying to put a stop to this, because of supposed risks of poor hygiene and microbial contamination. In actual fact, this raw milk is much more hygienically produced than is pasteurised milk, and the taste and nutritional content is far superior to the degraded pasteurised product. I've written more fully on the subject of raw milk before. There is an English dairy farm which produces and sells Raw Milk: Hook & Son.

Official praise for Rhys Morgan's campaign against MMS, the dangerous chemical sold as a health cure on the internet

See WalesOnline News report.

"A SCHOOLBOY’S campaign to ban a “miracle” health drink was hailed yesterday by UK Government officials after it was taken off sale in Britain.

Rhys Morgan, 15, highlighted the dangers of Miracle Mineral Solution to trading standards officials.

And the Food Standards Agency (FSA) yesterday said it had warned other European countries about it after Rhys’ campaign."

I think Rhys should receive an award. His campaign must surely have saved some people from great harm and suffering. And well done to the Trading Standards Officers and other officials for taking Rhys seriously and taking action on the matter.

Food Standards Agency Alert warns that a chemical marketed as 'Miracle Mineral Supplement' is actually similar to industrial-strength bleach

See BBC News report and also Walesonline report. The Walesonline report tells us that Rhys Morgan, a 15 year old Cardiff schoolboy, has been campaigning on this matter since finding on the internet "that MMS is banned in Canada and that America’s Food and Drug Administration agency warns that when used as directed, MMS produces an “industrial bleach that can cause serious harm to health." - Well done, Rhys!

'Miracle Mineral Supplement' is 28% sodium chlorite. It clearly should not be ingested/swallowed.

GeneWatch Director has resigned over Food Standards Agency 's pro-GM stand

FSA GM dialogue process a ‘PR exercise on behalf of the GM industry’
On 26th May, Dr Helen Wallace, the Director of GeneWatch UK, resigned her membership of the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) Steering Group for the GM dialogue, with immediate effect. In a public letter of resignation to John Curtice, the Chair of the Steering Group, she declared that it had become clear to her that the purpose of the FSA process was nothing more than a PR exercise on behalf of the GM industry. She also believes that the process would be a significant waste of £500,000 of taxpayers'money.

UK Faculty of Public Health wants ban on trans-fats in UK food

UK Faculty of Public Health wants ban on trans-fats in UK food. So do I! Read BBC News article, where you will see that "an editorial in the British Medical Journal said 7,000 deaths a year could be prevented by a 1% reduction in consumption" of trans-fats.

Trans-fats - solid fats found in margarines, biscuits, pastries, cakes and fast food - have no nutritional value and are banned in some countries. You'd think that the Food Standards Agency would be in favour of banning trans-fats, wouldn't you? But you'd be wrong.

Trans-fats are used to extend shelf life of products and so are useful to the food industry, and the FSA pays far too much heed to the voice of the food industry, and so is unconcerned about those thousands of deaths that could be prevented and the even greater numbers of people suffering avoidable ill-health for want of a ban on trans-fats in food.

Do yourself and your family's health a big favour by avoiding fast food and using butter rather than margarine.

Saturday, 23 January 2010

Transfats (artificial trans fatty acids) added to foods should be banned, but Andrew Wadge, Food Standards Agency's Chief Scientist, disagrees. WHY?

This Guardian report informs us that "The UK Faculty of Public Health is urging ministers to eradicate artificial trans fatty acids, known as trans fats, from the British diet. The move is needed to reduce people's risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke, says the faculty, which represents 3,300 doctors and public health specialists in the NHS, local government and medical research."

But Andrew Wadge, the Food Standards Agency's Chief Scientist, disagrees. One wonders why. The fact that only small quantities are added is a disingenuous argument, since even very small quantities are harmful.

In that same blogpost you will see that he is also flogging that old, disproved warhorse, namely that saturated fats are bad for us. He claims that " As a nation we are all eating much more saturated fat than we need to, which is having a negative effect on our health", which is quite untrue, and it's a real shame that the FSA is campaigning to discourage people from eating saturated fats. For a more informed and well-researched view on saturated fats I urge you to read this blogpost by Dr Briffa.

And here's a very simple way to reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke: cut down on salt and salty food.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, boost your lung function and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it!

I'm Against Genetically Modified Food

I'm against GM food. I'd like GM food to be banned in this country. Maybe you too have views on GM food. Most people in the UK seem to be against GM food. I have the impression that the Government and the Food Standards Agency don't give a damn what members of the public think; they are in favour of GM food. I suppose there's some inducement involved somewhere.

The Food Standards Agency commissioned a report Exploring Attitudes to GM Food, carried out by the National Centre for Social Research, containing the findings of a focus group, involving a sample of only 30 people.

The Telegraph has an article here about the report. I'd say the most obvious 'attitude' to which the report draws attention is the patronising attitude of the report's authors towards the people whose attitudes they are supposedly exploring.

Here are some websites that, like me, and maybe you, are also against GM food. There are many others.

Ban on particular vitamin and mineral food supplements from 1 January 2010 may contravene EU law

The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) has informed the UK’s food regulator, the Food Standards Agency (FSA), that the proposed ban on particular vitamin and mineral food supplements from 1 January 2010 flies in the face of the European Court of Justice ruling on the ANH’s case in 2005.

Beware the Great British SALTY Breakfast!

The Food Standards Agency is warning that British breakfasts tend to be high in salt, as is reported by the Telegraph today: Breakfast is often the saltiest meal of the day.

Rosemary Hignett, the FSA’s head of nutrition, says, among other things, "“We’re not suggesting people stop eating or even cut down on bread or breakfast cereals, as they are important part of a healthy diet." Unfortunately it is quite untrue for her to say that they are an important part of a healthy diet; they are not at all important to a healthy diet. It's about time the FSA clarified its thinking on this matter. They clearly have divided loyalties, but by kowtowing to the Food Industry they subvert the facts they should be presenting to consumers.

Top 10 foods which contribute most to our daily salt intake:

1. Bread

2. Meat products (that is processed meat products, e.g. sausages, bacon)

3. Breakfast cereals (e.g. Kellogg's cornflakes)

4. Cheese

5. Butter/spreads (Buy unsalted butter instead of salted butter.)

6. Baked beans

7. Ready meals

8. Soups

9. Pizzas

10. Crisps and snacks

Pity about the'unacceptable' levels of pesticides in supermarket fruit and veg...

Pity about the'unacceptable' levels of pesticides in supermarket fruit and veg... See Telegraph report. - And a pity the Food Standards Agency, with its divided loyalties, seeks to downplay this:

Extracts from the article: "The Food Standards Agency insisted the illegal levels did not necessarily mean that the food was unsafe to eat, and pointed out that the overall levels of pesticides in food had fallen over the last year. In 2007 1.8 per cent of food had illegal levels; 2008 it had fallen to 1.2 per cent." "Emma Hockridge, policy co-ordinator at the Soil Association, said: "Unbelievably we learn yet again that pesticides are turning up in fruit and vegetables supplied to schoolchildren. Yet again the government tells us this is nothing to be worried about.

"Yet we know that children’s exposure and susceptibility to pesticides is likely to be higher as per body weight they ingest more food and drink than adults and their bodies' ability to process and excrete any such residues is different to that of adults."

I reckon organic fruit and veg must be safer, though of course, it also costs more.

Higher levels of salt in 'free from' food products than in standard lines.

BBC News reports that "People choosing wheat or dairy-free products could be risking their heart health because many are loaded with salt."

Consensus
Action on Salt and Health has been surveying 71 own-label "free from" products from five leading supermarkets in the UK and found that over half contained more salt than the retailer's standard version of the product. Some had six times as much.

An example is "Sainsbury's Free From Jaffa Cakes have 0.67g of salt per 100g, compared with 0.1g of salt per 100g in standard Sainsbury's Jaffa Cakes.

This is more than six times the salt level of the standard version."

This really is shameful. All of the supermarkets know that salt content needs to be lowered in order to reduce the great harm that salty food is doing to most of the population. Actually to raise the salt content for people already suffering ill-health and seeking safe food is disgraceful.

The Food Standards Agency sadly is mostly words and little action. They should be enforcing less harmful salt levels on food manufacturers not waiting for the food producers to move at the speed of a snail on tranquillisers to reduce salt content. - And certainly not countenancing manufacturers who actually increase the salt content!

I heard Professor Jack Winkler, Professor of Nutrition Policy, London Metropolitan University, on the radio early this morning. - Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he was complacently envisaging a twenty year wait for the food industry to lower the salt content to less dangerously high levels! - What is this? - Nutrition professor content to have yet another generation of fat, unfit consumers, plagued by chronic illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, cancer and all the rest of the obesity co-morbidities, just for want of telling the truth about salt and insisting to the food industry that their profits cannot be deemed to be more important than the nation's health.

I fear there are too many vested interests involved in this destruction of the health of the nation (and other nations). Big Pharma's malign influence inflates the already reckless tendency of medics to prescribe more and more drugs, too many of which drugs cause salt sensitivity (i.e. fluid retention/weight gain). The salt sensitivity coupled with the food industry having ladled salt into their products for many years now and produced many customers 'addicted' to salty food, will literally be the death of millions of innocent consumers, who very sadly will have endured years of ill-health, unhappiness and insults before that release.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver damage and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! FSA wants salt levels to be further reduced

The Telegraph reports that the Food Standard Agency is urging the Food Industry to cut salt levels further in order to save avoidable deaths.

In my opinion, both the Food Standards Agency and the Food Industry need to pull their little socks up and get real about this vitally important public health measure. - Salt reduction in bread and other processed foods is going at the speed of a slug on tranquillisers...)o:

Iffy chemical, Bisphenol A, still present in some babies' plastic feeding bottles in the UK.

Baby bottle chemical is removed
article on the BBC News website

Extract:

"The makers of babies' bottles in the US are to remove a controversial chemical from their products, amid growing concern over its possible effects.

The six manufacturers say they are reacting to consumer demand by removing Bisphenol A (BPA) from their bottles.

But they will continue selling bottles containing BPA in the UK, a decision which has angered campaigners.

The Food Standards Agency insists BPA in UK plastic products is "well below the levels considered harmful".

The chemical is widely used in plastic manufacture and is commonly found in food and drink containers.

Heated bottles

There has been growing concern about the possible effects of BPA leaching into babies' feed when bottles are heated.

The current advice for parents is not to pour boiling liquid directly into bottles, not to microwave them or use scratched or worn ones.

Research carried out at Exeter University found that adults with high levels of BPA in their system were more prone to heart disease and diabetes

Dr Iain Lang, who led the study, said: "There is not enough to provide us with the evidence to say there is definitely a link, there is definitely something going on."

I reckon most parents would prefer to err on the side of caution where their baby's health is concerned.

Britain's most-popular brands of bread could be banned from claiming health benefits of their very salty loaves, under draft EU regulations.

Bakers face ban on claiming salty breads are healthy
article in the Telegraph

Extracts:

"Bakers would no longer be able to market their products as "high in fibre" or "wholesome" if they contain more than 1g of salt per 100g.

Research in 2007 indicated that nearly half of loaves on supermarket shelves in Britain were above this threshold, indicating that the proposed rule could affect millions of loaves sold each year.

Major producers including Warburtons and Hovis are among the worst offenders, tests have shown, with some breads marked multigrain, organic or "diet" containing higher than recommended levels of salt.

Bread is the largest single source of salt in our diet and health experts say that cutting the amount used in baking could save 7,000 lives a year by reducing rates of heart attacks and strokes.

The EU limit is lower than a 1.1g per 100g target set for 2010 by the Food Standards Agency."

"The British Federation of Bakers said that the salt content of loaves had fallen substantially in recent years, and said that the EU regulations may include exemptions for certain types of loaf – including wholemeal and brown – by the time they are finalised next month."

I regard it as disgraceful that bread manufacturers have been allowed to manufacture and sell these high salt breads when it is known that high salt intake can and does harm health.

You can easily make your own bread by using a breadmaker and ensure that it has a much lower sodium content, especially if you use a lower sodium salt substitute instead of ordinary table salt.

Restaurants, sandwich chains and coffee shops will soon start to display calorie counts on their menus in a misguided attempt to fight UK's obesity.

Restaurants to display calorie counts on menus to help obesity crisis
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Within the next six months many well known chains, including Pizza Hut and Pret a Manger, will start to prominently display the calorie content of all of its food.

The idea is being pushed by the Food Standards Agency, the Government's food regulator, which wants all outlets from fish and chip shops to Michelin-starred restaurants to give details of what is in their meals.

If it is a success, the FSA is considering going even further by asking restaurants to publish so-called 'traffic light' labels on their menus, which would highlight in red if a dish was too salty, sugary or fatty."

Knowledge of calorie content will not help anyone to become less obese. Providing this information will be just another colossal waste of time and money. - To lose excess weight it is helpful to know the salt/sodium content, not the calories.

Obesity is not caused by eating fat or sugar or too many calories. Nor is it caused by inactivity/laziness. It is caused by weakened veins leading to fluid retention in the bloodstream, i.e. sodium retention and water/fluid retention, and thereby to excess weight/obesity.

The way to reduce/prevent obesity is to avoid salt and salty food, and to avoid prescription drugs as far as possible because these are a major cause of the the blood vessel damage that precedes the salt sensitivity/fluid retention.

Why not help with disseminating the truth? - If you have any friends who are overweight and know from experience that dieting does not work, tell them about my blog or send them a link to my website. - Better still, tell your MP about my website. - I'm afraid my own MP is as much use as a chocolate teapot...)o:

If it were not so tragic and doing such catastrophic harm, the ignorance that Dawn Primarolo displays about what causes obesity would be hilarious.

Fast food restaurants should have to advertise calorie counts, says Minister
Article in the Telegraph

Fast food restaurants should have to advertise how many calories are in their meals, the public health minister, Dawn Primarolo, has said.

Extract:

""I know good diet isn't just about calorie content, and I know there will be difficulties for independent restaurants, but we have to start somewhere. Why can't we have calorie content on menus in all chain restaurants?"

She also called for soft drinks manufacturers to produce their products in smaller sizes.

She praised drinks companies for the range of low sugar drinks on the market.

But she called for greater numbers of soft drinks to come in "snack" sizes.""

"The minister was speaking at a conference on food and health organised by the Department of Health and the Food Standards Agency."

They're all as bad as each, it appears...)o: - The calorie content is the least important bit of information that is provided for food. It would not be going too far really to assert that the calorie content is completely irrelevant! - It's totally irrelevant for obesity reduction anyway, and, in my opinion, should not be included in the nutritional information on food wrappers, etc. The most important information needed is the salt content.

Until the truth is told - and nothing BUT the truth - about how to prevent/reduce obesity, then the increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes and all the other illnesses attendant on obesity, aka fluid retention, will continue inexorably to rise. - It is FLUID RETENTION that needs to be addressed - the real cause of obesity - not over-eating, the completely imaginary cause that doctors and the other ill-informed diet bullies have invented.

Obesity is not caused by eating to excess or by insufficient exercise. There has never been a scrap of reproducible scientific research or evidence to support the theory that excess calorie intake causes obesity, nor that calorie deficit reduces obesity. The theory and the advice it spawns should be abandoned forthwith. They cause great harm and suffering.

When people whose blood vessels are weaker than the norm eat salt, the result is weight gain and obesity (because of excess sodium and water held in the blood vessels and elsewhere). This condition is also known as sodium retention, water retention, fluid retention, salt sensitivity or oedema. If these people reduce their salt intake they lose some of the excess sodium and water, and so lose weight, and if they eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables they lose weight faster, because the potassium in the fruit and vegetables displaces some of the excess sodium from the body.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Tougher targets for lowering the salt in food have been announced after research shows Britons still consume on average 50 per cent more than advised.

Britons still eating 50pc too much salt
AArticle in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Breakfast cereals, bread and cheese are among 80 everyday foodstuffs that should have further cuts made to their salt contents, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

New research carried out by the FSA on nearly 700 British adults showed that average salt intake was 8.6g per day - significantly higher than the Government's national target of 6g, or one level teaspoon.

The findings, which come after a high-profile campaign to encourage people to reduce their salt intake, show that average consumption has continued to decline, falling from 9.5g in 2001 and 9g last year.

But reducing the average daily intake to 6g could prevent about 20,200 premature deaths every year from strokes, heart attacks and heart failure, according to the FSA.

It also says "substantial achievements" have been made by some producers - including breakfast cereal manufacturers, who have reduced salt in cereals by an average of 43 per cent since 2006; some crisp makers, who have managed a 55 per cent drop; and the makers of Pot Noodles, who have cut salt in the snack by half."

If the 'experts'would tell people the truth about the role of salt in the incidence and severity of obesity there would be such an outcry and a demand from consumers for lower salt or unsalted food that the manufacturers wouldn't keep playing silly beggars with their customers' health; they'd reduce the salt content substantially and pronto.

But of course not everyone needs to reduce salt/sodium intake. - In my opinion there should be ranges of food provided containing absolutely no added salt - so that steroid victims and amitriptyline victims and other very overweight people can have food that is safe for them to eat and is also convenient - because when you are very overweight you feel really tired and it is difficult and exhausting always to have to cook from scratch so as not to gain even more weight. - And there could be other food ranges that do have added salt, for the people who are slim and who do not have high blood pressure. - But the two ranges would need to be kept apart and be very easy to distinguish one from another.

And of course all the ranges could stop putting the calorie count on packs because it's irrelevant: calorie reduction does not reduce obesity AT ALL.

Marmite, cheddar cheese, raisins, Corn Flakes and honey are to remain banned from being advertised during children's television programmes...

This is crazy! - Raisins, honey and Marmite banned from children's television adverts
Article in the Telegraph

I'm all in favour of banning Marmite ads: Marmite is laden with salt and therefore very bad for children. But raisins and other dried fruits are very low in sodium/salt and are high in potassium and therefore tend to reduce the risk of child obesity, not increase it. - Child obesity, like all obesity, is caused by fluid retention, not by fat/sugar/calories. - See this page about children and obesity - http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/children.html

And the ads for
Kellogg's Special K Sustain are allowed! - Yet this cereal is very high in sodium - 0.45g sodium per 100g product. - See http://www.kelloggs.co.uk/products/specialk/cereal/special_k_sustain.aspx

Extract from the article:
"However, the FSA said monitoring calories per 100 grams was the most effective way of cutting down on childhood obesity."
This is categorically untrue! - The most effective way to cut down on child obesity (and adult obesity) is to see that they avoid eating salt and salty food. - I don't know how the FSA (Food Standards Agency) gets away with giving the wrong information about the cause of child obesity. - Monitoring calories has absolutely no role to play in reducing child obesity.

Pizzas could be contaminated by toxic chemicals found in take-away boxes, and could, therefore, be harmful to human health, according to a new study.

Pizza boxes could harm human health
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Scientists found boxes made from recycled material sometimes contain toxic inks, glues and dyes which could be transferred to food when heated.

One chemical, diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), is causing particular concern because of fears it could affect sex hormones.

DIBP is part of the phthalate group of chemicals, which according to the Food Standards Agency "may have a harmful affect on human reproductive development because they have been reported to be endocrine (hormone) disrupters."

German paper and cardboard manufacturers have stopped using the chemical for fear of its potential dangers.

Monica Bononi, lead scientist in the research, explained that as hot pizzas are placed in boxes there is a chance food will be exposed to chemicals in the cardboard."

SMA, the UK manufacturer of baby milk, has been forced to pull 40,000 cartons of baby milk after complaints the milk had curdled and made a baby ill.

SMA baby milk recalled after product makes children sick
article in the Telegraph:

Extract:

"The Food Standards Agency has confirmed SMA Nutrition has pulled 40,530 1 litre packs of SMA Gold ready-to-use liquid infant milk off shop shelves following 11 complaints.

The packs of milk will be found on shop shelves around the country. The packs have a best before date of 12 March 2009 and carry the code 06033G.

A spokesman for SMA Nutrition said customers complained of opening the packs to find the milk had separated and curdled.

Most customers did not use the milk, but two babies refused to feed and one vomited immediately after drinking the product.

One mother from north London was reported to have given the milk to her nine-month old daughter, who was subsequently "extremely sick" for three days, she claimed."

"Customers can call the SMA Careline on 0800 0890075 to discuss concerns and receive a replacement carton."
