Criticism mounts on GSK re Avandia, its diabetes drug widely regarded as unsafe

See the Telegraph article. Incredibly Glaxo's response has been, ""Since 2007 we have seen results from six controlled clinical trials looking at the cardiovascular safety of Avandia. Together they show that this medicine does not increase the overall risk of heart attack, stroke or death."" - And the band played believe it if you like...

Glaxo playing the wide-eyed innocent sits oddly with the ghastly history of the usage of this drug, and the tactics, including intimidation, GSK have employed to try to suppress the facts about its adverse effects. You can read some of that history here: http://wildeaboutobesity.blogspot.com/search/label/Avandia.

Statins are causing muscle damage in some patients.

Science Daily reports on a study "by researchers from the University of Bern, Switzerland and the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, [who] looked at muscle biopsies from 83 patients, 20 of whom had never taken statins. They found significant muscle injury in patients who had taken statins, including several who had discontinued medication before the biopsy."

Many patients experience a lot of adverse side-effects from statins (drugs taken to lower harmful cholesterol levels and thereby to reduce cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, etc.). Many discontinue the medication because they find the side-effects too unpleasant. And of course, the side-effects can do lasting harm, even if you discontinue them.

Prescription drugs including many steroids, many antidepressants, anti-psychotics and epilepsy drugs as well as other pharmaceuticals, are a major cause of high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, cardiovascular disease, depression, cancer, brittle bones, etc. - Avoid taking prescription drugs unless they are absolutely necessary.

The most effective and the cheapest way to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart attack, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and a multitude of other chronic health problems is to avoid eating salt and salty food. This is also a completely safe measure to take; reducing sodium intake has no bad side effects whatsoever. - You will also find, if you are overweight, that reducing salt reduces your excess weight.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver damage and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! A class of type 2 diabetes drugs carries significant cardiovascular risks

A class of oral drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes may make heart failure worse, according to an editorial published online in Heart Wednesday by two Wake Forest University School of Medicine faculty members. "We strongly recommend restrictions in the use of thiazolidinediones (the class of drugs) and question the rationale for leaving rosiglitazone on the market," write Sonal Singh, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of internal medicine, and Curt D. Furberg, M.D., Ph.D., professor of public health sciences. Rosiglitazone and pioglitazone are the two major thiazolidinediones. In the editorial Singh and Furberg say, "At this time, justification for use of thiazolidinediones is very weak to non-existent."

AstraZeneca's Crestor fails in new heart-failure study

AstraZeneca Plc's cholesterol drug Crestor has failed in a second clinical trial for heart failure, suggesting such statin medicines don't improve survival in patients with the chronic condition. Patients given Crestor proved just as likely to die early or be admitted to hospital with cardiovascular problems as those on standard therapy alone, researchers told the European Society of Cardiology annual meeting.

Omega-3 may help survival rates for heart patients

A daily supplement of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may reduce mortality and admission to hospital for cardiovascular reasons in patients with heart failure, says a new study. Mortality rates were reduced by nine per cent, and hospital admission for cardiovascular reasons was cut by eight per cent on heart failure patients assigned to receive omega-3, compared to placebo.

A once-a-day capsule of fish oils could reduce the risk of death in patients with heart failure by up to 14 per cent, a study has found.

Daily fish oil capsule can reduce risk of death in heart failure patients by 14%
Article in the Sunday Telegraph

Extracts:

"Almost one million people in the UK are thought to have heart failure, a condition in which the heart muscle is weakened and does not pump efficiently.

A research study has found that patients who took omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acid capsules were less likely to die or be admitted to hospital with heart problems than those who took a dummy pill.

The capsules contained 1 gram of omega 3, which is known to be good for the heart as it helps improve the elasticity of the blood vessels, reduce inflammation and promotes a good rhythm.

Omega 3 is present in cod liver oil and is found naturally in fish such as salmon and mackerel.

Across the whole group of almost 7,000 participants there was a 9 per cent reduced risk of death in those on fish oils.

But when the researchers looked at 5,000 patients who followed the once-daily regime more closely, the effect was bigger and the risk of deaths was reduced by 14 per cent."

"Prof Luigi Tavazzi from the research centre of the of the Italian Association of Hospital Cardiologists based in Florence, said: "Our study shows that the long-term administration of 1g per day of omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acid was effective in reducing both all-cause mortality and admissions to hospital for cardiovascular reasons.

"This is the first study of omega 3 in patients with heart failure, an area which is not rich in new drugs."

This is a modest effect but it is on top of recommended therapies. It's safe, simple and cheap.""

I welcome this report. I have been taking omega 3 capsules for years and feel sure they do me good.

But the most important measure to take to improve heart health and avoid heart failure is to avoid salt and salty food.

Obese nine-year-old girls at 'heart attack risk'

Obese nine-year-old girls at 'heart attack risk'

Extracts:

"Overweight girls as young as nine years old have an increased likelihood of suffering from short and long-term cardiovascular problems, a far-reaching US study has found. The authors of the ten-year study from the country's National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute are warning that girls aged between nine and 12 are much more susceptible to obesity than teenagers.

More than 2,300 girls aged between nine and ten were studied over a decade as part of the research, with their height, weight, blood pressure and cholesterol recorded annually until they reached 18 years old."

"Publishing their results in the Journal of Paediatrics, the authors add that overweight girls were found to be up to 30 times more likely to suffer from obesity later in adulthood. In addition, girls of African-American descent were revealed to be 1.5 times more likely to be become overweight in adulthood than Caucasian girls."

It is high time - more than time! - that health professionals and others should be giving the information that it is fluid retention that causes obesity and not overeating. - To reduce fluid retention it is necessary to cut down on salt/sodium intake - AND FORGET ABOUT THE CALORIE ADVICE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT WORK!
