Obesity drug, Reductil (Sibutramine), an appetite suppressant, is being withdrawn from use in UK because of risk of heart attack and stroke

BBC News reports that "the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has told doctors to stop prescribing sibutramine and review its use in patients already taking it." And ""Pharmacists are asked to cease dispensing the medicine."

It has been used by 86,000 people in the past year. Since ALL obesity drugs are harmful and unnecessary, it makes me think things must be really bad for the MHPRA to ban its use.

If you are overweight/obese and wanting to lose some of your excess weight, do not turn to weight loss pills. They are neither safe nor effective. The safe, fast, easy way to lose excess weight is to minimise the amount of salt and salty food you eat, avoid dieting, eat plenty of fruit and unsalted vegetables, and make sure you have dairy calcium, e.g. milk and yoghurt, as part of your food intake.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, boost your lung function and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it!

Don't be duped into buying dodgy OTC weight loss drugs. - You just need to cut down on sodium intake.

The Sunday Telegraph reports that this week UK chemists will be able to sell two over-the-counter drugs that are claimed to help with weight loss. One of them is Alli, which interferes with fat digestion causing very unpleasant side-effects, and the other is Appesat, which is said to reduce appetite. Both of them are potentially harmful and neither of them is necessary for losing excess weight. - You do not need to spend money on pharmaceutical junk in order to lose weight.

Excess weight is caused by fluid retention in people who are sensitive to salt and this excess weight can easily be reduced by cutting down on salt and salty food. - Read on:

A new obesity wonder drug can cause twice as much weight loss as current treatments, a new study claims. - Don't fall for it! - Just eat less salt!

New obesity drug 'can double weight loss'
Article in the Telegraph

Extract: - the claim:

"The new drug works by restricting feelings of hunger in the brain.

As a result, patients eat less and their bodies start to burn off reserves of fat.

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen tested the drug, called tesofensine, on 203 patients, who each weighed an average of 15 stone.

Taking the drug at a dose of 0.5 mg just once a day for six months, at the same time as eating a healthy diet, produced an average weight loss of 11.3 kg, or 1 st 10 lb, around twice that of standard weight loss drugs."

Extract: - the warning:

"Prof Steve O’Rahilly, an expert in obesity at the University of Cambridge, said: “The results with this new drug demonstrate that, over a 6 month period, it is quite effective. However as the drug is likely to have actions on parts of the brain not involved in weight control, the risk of serious side effects on longer term administration will need to be watched very carefully.”"

The facts:

All that is necessary to reduce obesity is to give up dieting and to avoid salt and salty food in order to reduce the fluid retention which is the cause of obesity. - HUNGER AND CALORIE REDUCTION ARE ARE HARMFUL, UNNECESSARY AND INEFFECTIVE - BECAUSE CALORIES ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. - DON'T FALL FOR THE CALORIE CON!

The claim is made that " New 'thin pill' could replace surgery". - Beware! - Big Pharma is planning yet more dangerous junk with which to harm us..)o:

New 'thin pill' could replace surgery

Extract from the Telegraph:

"A team at University College London is working towards developing a weight loss pill that makes people feel they are full after eating a small amount of food.

The stomach has to expand to digest food, the basic process by which the body harvests calories from meals, but scientists have found a way of stopping this from happening.

The pill could offer an alternative to stomach stapling - gastroplasty - in which a band or surgery is used to reduce the size of the stomach. This can result in weight loss of up to 7st in a year.

However, surgery can be risky with one in every 100 patients dying within 12 months. The potential new drug is described in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics by Dr Brian King and Dr Andrea Townsend-Nicholson."

There is no need for surgery OR for pills that make people feel they are full after eating a small amount of food. - The fastest, safest and surest way for overweight/obese people to lose excess weight is to avoid eating salt and salty food. - This is because fluid retention/salt sensitivity, and not overeating, is the cause of the high incidence of obesity.

Fluid retention itself has a number of causes, the most damaging of which is taking certain prescribed medications, including tricyclic antidepressants, especially amitriptyline, and certain steroids, including prednisone and prednisolone, and HRT and other drugs containing oestrogen. But the most tragic cause of fluid retention leading to obesity is children eating salty food. Pregnancy also can result in salt sensitivity.

Dieting/calorie reduction is harmful and does not work and it is mischievous that it is still advocated.

There is a great deal more information and detail about this on my website. - Every overweight person who has followed my advice has lost weight easily and felt a great deal better. - I am not selling anything...(o:

Pills are not the answer to the problem of obesity. - They are the biggest cause of the problem...

Safe, reliable, free obesity advice

'Munchies' drug offers hope to the obese

The Telegraph article is about taranabant, another so-called weight-loss drug.

But drugs are not necessary to lose weight when you are overweight or obese. - Nor is dieting, calorie-counting or vigorous exercise. - You will lose weight fast and safely by eating less salt and salty food. - This is because obesity is caused not by overeating but by fluid retention, and fluid retention is made worse by eating salt/sodium.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

The slimming drug, Rimonabant/Acomplia, an appetite suppressant, causes depression and other adverse symptoms, and is not much good for losing weight.

Study links slimming drug to depression

Extract from the Telegraph:

"The safety of a slimming drug taken by tens of thousands of people in UK has been questioned after new research linked it to a 40 per cent increase in the risk of depression.

Rimonabant, marketed as Acomplia, is an appetite surpressant prescribed on the NHS for people who are obese.

Research carried out in Denmark involving records of 4105 people found that although the patients on the drug lost 4.7kg (10lbs) more than those on a dummy pill, they were much more likely to suffer psychological problems.

Patients on rimonabant were 2.5 times more likely to stop taking their medication due to depression and were three times more likely to stop because of anxiety.

The Danish research is published in The Lancet medical journal accompanies an editorial by Australian experts saying the study 'raises major questions about the safety of rimonabant in obese people'.

In 2006 over one million prescriptions were written for obesity drugs in England alone."

The objective of an appetite suppressant drug is to get the person taking it to eat less food/fewer calories than their body requires. If it succeeds in this objective - getting someone to eat less food than their body requires - it should be no surprise that the person feels depressed. - You, too, would probably feel pretty miserable if you were eating less food than your body required. - Eating less food than your body requires? - Go figure! - It's not likely to do you any good, is it? - Dieting makes you tired, cold, hungry - and depressed. - It doesn't make you slim...

It's easy for obese people to lose weight without any adverse side-effects if they give up dieting completely, and concentrate instead on giving up eating salt/sodium and salty food. Obese people who do this seriously lose about a stone (14 pounds) in the first month! - One woman, Joyce Barnard, lost 5 stone (70 pounds) in a year by doing this! - She completely stopped sprinkling salt onto her meals and she used LoSalt instead of ordinary salt in her cooking. - That is all she did. - You'd never get weight loss like that by using appetite suppressants!

I think it's scandalous that the NHS is wasting money and damaging people's health by paying for this pharmaceutical junk to be prescribed to innocent patients.

Lose weight and improve your health in many ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

A daily slimming pill, Acomplia, taken by about 10,000 British patients may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and other psychological symptoms.

Slimming pill 'linked to thoughts of suicide' - Telegraph

The pill is rimonabant, also known as Acomplia and as Zimulti.

Extract:

"A daily slimming pill taken by about 10,000 British patients may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and other psychological symptoms.

The drug rimonabant, sold as Acomplia in the UK and available only on prescription, was hailed as a "wonder drug" when it was approved for use in Europe last year.

Research suggested almost four in 10 overweight people who take it lose 10 per cent of their body weight.

However, it emerged yesterday that the drug was unlikely to be approved in America because of fears over the possible psychological effects on users. Dr Amy Egan, an American medical officer, told experts advising the Food and Drug Administration that medical trials had suggested that patients taking the drug report side-effects including depression and anxiety."

There is no need at all to take slimming pills to lose excess weight. - You can lose weight fast, safely and easily, without hunger, by simply cutting out salt and salty food from what you eat. - This reduces fluid retention, which is the cause of obesity.

First over-the-counter weight loss pill to be UK-approved next year

First over-the-counter weight loss pill to be UK-approved next year - Independent

This is absolute lunacy!

1st Extract:

"In the US, the Food and Drug Administration gave the go-ahead to Alli last month, triggering a marketing campaign that the company hopes will reap five to six million US customers a year. Priced between $12 and $25 a week (£5-12), Alli could have annual sales of $1.5bn. "

What a disgraceful and unnecessary waste of money!

2nd Extract:

"Glaxo said yesterday that it planned to apply for a European licence by the end of the year with the launch of the drug expected to follow within 12 months. Alli is a version of Xenical, the prescription weight loss remedy launched by the Swiss pharmaceutical company, Roche, in 1999.

Two thirds of adults are overweight or obese and the numbers are continuing to rise. Experts believe diet and discipline are not alone sufficient to prevent waistlines expanding and that extra help is required. "

All that is necessary to curb the growing incidence of obesity is to tell the truth about what causes it! - Obesity is NOT caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, frequently because of taking prescribed medications, especially steroids such as prednisolone, prednisone and HRT, and anti-depressants such as amitriptyline. Obesity can be easily reduced by seriously reducing your salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. - It is important not to restrict calories. - 'Slimming' is unnecessary, ineffective and often harmful.

3rd Extract:

"This unabsorbed fat has to go somewhere and dieters using it are prone to diarrhoea, its least attractive side-effect. Steve Burton, the Glaxo executive in charge of promoting Alli, has used the drug himself and described to reporters the embarrassment it caused when he ate a fish and chip meal - the result was a dash home for a change of clothes. Still, Mr Burton, 48, is a walking advertisement for Alli. Over three years his weight fell from 275lb to 210lb. "

Appalling! - And Mr Burton could have lost the same amount or more of weight in a far shorter time, simply by reducing, and then eliminating, all avoidable salt/sodium from what he eats, and making sure this included plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit. - This would have been completely safe, and cost-free, and would have involved no hunger, no fat restriction, no adverse side-effects at all. - Indeed there would have been a host of additional health benefits from the salt restriction.

Addendum (added 18 October 2008)
