Food Inc.

If you eat food - and I guess you do - Food Inc. is one film you really should see. I've just been watching it and I reckon I'll watch it again 'cos there's a lot in it - a lot of stuff you won' t know if you've not seen it, 'cos the food industry likes to keep a lot of facts secret in case those facts put you off buying their products.

I can't remotely do justice to this brave film. Here is how Wikipedia's entry about it begins: "Food, Inc. is a 2008 American documentary film directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Robert Kenner.[2] The film examines corporate farming in the United States, concluding that agribusiness produces food that is unhealthy in a way that is abusive of animals and environmentally harmful."

Please watch this film! Please do what you can to avert the harm that the food industry is perpetrating on the health and happiness of consumers, workers, animals and the environment.

Researchers wrongly conclude that cutting down on meat will result in weight loss.

It's remarkable how often researchers draw false conclusions from accurate data. In this BBC News item we read that a study of "almost 400,000 adults found that eating meat was linked with weight gain, even in people taking in the same number of calories.

The strongest association was found with processed meat, such as sausages and ham, the Imperial College London team reported."

But instead of adopting the scientific approach and investigating why the processing of meat, such as sausages and ham, was so significant, they have decided that their research "counters the theory that diets with high amounts of protein and low amounts of carbohydrate promote weight loss." - What nonsense! What arrant nonsense! Research is a waste of time and expense when such an illogical conclusion is drawn! - They also failed to follow the clue about the calories to its logical conclusion.

I suggest that they investigate the significance of salt/sodium intake on weight gain. It's high time somebody did! (High sodium content is the main difference between processed meat and fresh meat.)

Processed meat risks health, studies suggest; fresh meat OK.

BBC News reports that a Harvard University team which looked at studies involving over one million people from 10 countries found just 50g of processed meat a day increased the risk of heart disease and diabetes, while there was no such risk from unprocessed meat, such as beef, lamb or pork. They posit that the difference may be explained by the salt and preservatives added to processed meats (like bacon, sausages, salami and other luncheon meats).

Well I've been saying for years on my website and in my blogs that salt intake and dodgy added chemicals in processed 'foods' promote degenerative disease and obesity.

Parents are being advised against putting ham sandwiches into children's lunchboxes

Parents are being advised against putting ham sandwiches into children's lunchboxes in this BBC report. Other cured, salted, smoked and processed meats are also advised against. The reason given (by the World Cancer Research Fund) is that these meats increase the risk of bowel cancer in later life.

I agree with the WCRF that these meats are not good for children. Salty food, in particular, is not good for children. As well as increasing the risk of bowel cancer (and most other cancers too) it is the cause of child obesity. Unfortunately the Food Standards Agency says it is OK to give children cured, salted, smoked and processed meats occasionally. - Well it's not OK - not if you want your children to be as healthy as possible, and also to avoid becoming overweight.

Salt, of course, could properly be regarded as a carcinogen.

Sausages, bacon, ham and other processed meats increase the risk of developing bowel cancer.

Sausage a day can increase bowel cancer risk

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Eating one sausage or three rashers of bacon a day can increase the risk of bowel cancer by a fifth, a medical expert has said.

The warning involved only 1.8oz (50g) of processed meat daily.

Researchers found that almost half of cancers could be prevented with lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet, using sunscreen, not smoking and limiting alcohol intake.

The charity World Fund Cancer Research (WCRF) said more needed to be done to get across the message that people who eat processed meat regularly are putting their health at risk.

The Government has introduced a bowel cancer screening programme to offer tests every two years to all men and women aged between 60 and 69. Older people could ask for testing.

But experts believe it is more effective to prevent bowel cancer, the second most lethal form of the disease after lung cancer.

Prof Martin Wiseman, the medical and scientific adviser for the WCRF, said there was convincing evidence of a link between processed meats and cancer.

Processed meat is preserved by smoking, curing, salting or the addition of preservatives.

Examples include ham, bacon, pastrami, salami, hot dogs and processed sausages.

This includes hamburgers and minced meat if it has been preserved with salt or chemical additives.

One in 20 people develops bowel cancer and 16,000 people die from it each year.

Prof Wiseman said: "We are more sure now than ever before that eating processed meat increases your risk of bowel cancer.

"Whether it is bacon or ham, the safest amount to eat is none at all.""

It is advisable to cut down on all salted food, particularly if you are overweight/obese, because all overweight and obese people are sensitive to salt, and it is this salt sensitivity that has caused them to become overweight with fluid retention.

Mediterranean diet reduces risk of lung disease.

Mediterranean diet cuts the risk of lung disease - Independent

It is best to read the whole article because it is very detailed.

Extract:

"Eating a Mediterranean diet rich in fruit and vegetables halves the chances of developing lung disease, researchers have found.

Anti-oxidant vitamins in the foods help to counteract inflammatory processes that damage the lungs, a study shows.

By contrast, nitrites in processed meats, part of the typical Western diet, may contribute to progressive deterioration in lung function with age. Refined foods with a high glycaemic index (such as desserts and sweets) may also promote inflammation.

Serious lung disease is principally caused by smoking and is set to become the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2020, as a result of the rise in smoking in developing nations. It is known by the umbrella term Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which includes bronchitis, emphysema and related conditions. Not all smokers develop the disease, which has led researchers to look for the genetic and environmental factors that offer protection. One of these is diet."
