GM soy is being sneaked into Britain's Food Imports

"Millions of Britons are unwittingly eating food made using genetically modified soy, a survey of the leading grocery brands has disclosed. Household name brands like Cadbury Dairy Milk and Bird’s Eye use milk, eggs and meat made from animals that could have been fed GM soy, the research shows."

BBC News reports that England is 'healthier than the US'

BBC News reports that England is 'healthier than the US' and my subjectively selective quote...(o: from the article is: "The researchers say: "Why health status differs so dramatically in these two countries, which share much in terms of history and culture, is an unresolved puzzle."

Well, Stone me! as Tony Hancock might have said if he were still alive. - It's not a puzzle! - It's a no-brainer! - The US takes more junk medication than as yet the Brits do, and the US Food Industry and the US Agribusiness and GM/BioTech bullyboys ensure that Americans largely eat toxic, adulterated, additive-drenched, over-salted, HFCS-loaded, nutrition-lite crap instead of real food. How can the US possibly be healthy when most people's bodies and brains are having to contend with that poisonous combo continually assaulting them?

The Soil Association is concerned about "The big fat lie about doubling food production."

The Soil Association is rightly concerned about "The big fat lie about doubling food production." Unfortunately, when Big Business is involved in promulgating statistics, we invariably find, as in this case, that claims made are not facts, but propaganda. And when Monsanto is involved, as in this case, the propaganda is very dangerous. The spread of GM crops/food needs to be resisted. No good will come of GMOs.

The Soil Association reports that governments are using flawed food production data to justify GM food crops expansion

Governments and pro-agribusiness groups are using flawed data on food production requirements to push for an expansion of GM food crops, claims a new report from the Soil Association.

The idea of further expansion of GM food crops horrifies me. I am surprised at some of the people who espouse the expansion of GM food crops.

If you do not at present share my concerns about this perversion of food, I invite you to read Oryx and Crake, one of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novels, reviewed here in The Observer in 2003: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2003/may/11/fiction.margaretatwood. You may find Atwood’s accomplished and well-informed vision of a future world causes you an apprehensive shiver or two.

Bulgaria proposes five-year ban on GM foods

Following the wave of protests against a bill of amendments that would allow genetically-modified organisms (GMO) to be grown in Bulgaria, the country's ruling party will now propose a five-year ban on all genetically-modified cultures in the country, it emerged on February 5 2010. The ban would affect all crops and the entire country, Environment Minister Nona Karadjova said.

I'm Against Genetically Modified Food

I'm against GM food. I'd like GM food to be banned in this country. Maybe you too have views on GM food. Most people in the UK seem to be against GM food. I have the impression that the Government and the Food Standards Agency don't give a damn what members of the public think; they are in favour of GM food. I suppose there's some inducement involved somewhere.

The Food Standards Agency commissioned a report Exploring Attitudes to GM Food, carried out by the National Centre for Social Research, containing the findings of a focus group, involving a sample of only 30 people.

The Telegraph has an article here about the report. I'd say the most obvious 'attitude' to which the report draws attention is the patronising attitude of the report's authors towards the people whose attitudes they are supposedly exploring.

Here are some websites that, like me, and maybe you, are also against GM food. There are many others.

Egypt is banning genetically modified food imports and exports

Egypt is banning food imports and exports that are not certified free of genetically modified products, state news agency MENA reported. Want to be able to continue to buy vitamin and mineral supplements in the strengths you prefer?

Want to be able to continue to buy vitamin and mineral supplements in the strengths you prefer? - Then you will probably find this interview with Paul Anthony Taylor interesting:

The EU and the "Codex Alimentarius" and global food regulations that may limit your future choice options

Extract from the interview:

"in addition to dealing with ordinary foods, Codex also sets global standards for: vitamin and mineral food supplements; health claims; organic foods; genetically modified (GM) foods; food labeling; advertising; food additives and residues of pesticides and veterinary drugs in foods. In all of these areas, the evidence is now inescapable that Codex is increasingly putting economic interests – and particularly those of the pharmaceutical, chemical and GM industries – before human health."

Doctors call for moratorium on Genetically Modified foods

Europe's secret plan to boost GM crop production: - absolutely disgraceful in my opinion!

Gordon Brown and other EU leaders in campaign to promote modified foods
Gordon Brown and other European leaders are secretly preparing an unprecedented campaign to spread GM crops and foods in Britain and throughout the continent, confidential documents obtained by The Independent on Sunday reveal. The documents – minutes of a series of private meetings of representatives of 27 governments – disclose plans to "speed up" the introduction of the modified crops and foods and to "deal with" public resistance to them. And they show that the leaders want "agricultural representatives" and "industry" – presumably including giant biotech firms such as Monsanto – to be more vocal to counteract the "vested interests" of environmentalists.

Prince Charles remains vehemently against genetically modified (GM) crops.

Prince Charles sparks debate over GM crops claims
Article in the Telegraph, following the Daily Telegraph's exclusive interview with Prince Charles

Extracts:

"In a statement setting the Prince against politicians who believe GM foods will be crucial to feeding under-nourished populations in the developing world, he said: "What we should be talking about is food security, not food production - that is what matters and that is what people will not understand."

His belief was backed up by Mike Childs, the campaign director for Friends of the Earth. "GM crops will not solve the food crisis - and forging ahead with an industrialised farming system will continue to fail people and the environment around the world," Mr Childs said.

However Phil Willis, a Liberal Democrat MP and the chairman of the Commons science committee, said the Prince's "lack of scientific understanding" would "condemn millions of people to starvation in areas like sub-Saharan Africa"."

"The Prince accused large corporations of conducting experiments with nature, which had, he said "gone seriously wrong". His comments were supported by Patrick Holden, a director of the Soil Association.

"If we go down this path I think we will put this country at risk. There could be a period of great difficulty in the next 10 or 20 years," Mr Holden said. "No evidence has emerged from the first round of GM crops of any public benefits. They have actually increased pesticide use in the farms that have used them.""

I've a lot of sympathy with Prince Charles' views on GM foods.
