Dr Mercola warns that the FDA is compromising the safety of drugs
Wednesday, 4 July 2012
Do you really think that GSK, the drug company, is interested in helping people to be healthy?
The settlement will cover criminal fines as well as civil settlements with the federal and state governments.
The case concerns 10 drugs, including Paxil, Wellbutrin, Avandia and Advair."
Did you know that the many well-honed skills of GSK include bribing doctors to prescribe antidepressant drugs off-label for children, knowing that these drugs can and do result in grave harm to children, including death? And did you know that Andrew Witty, CEO of GlaxoSmithKline, was knighted in the 2012 New Year Honours List? - Beggars belief, doesn't it? - It's not as if the fraudulent practices of this firm have only come to light recently. They have been reported and in the public domain for years. Why was the head of this huge criminal business recommended for a knighthood?
I've mentioned Andrew Witty previously in one of my blogposts. - See HERE. Would you feel safe taking drugs made and marketed by this company? - Well I wouldn't.

Urgent need for safer devices for injecting drugs into the spine and not mixing them up with other drugs.
Wayne Jowett's parents have been campaigning about this since the terrible suffering and death of their son, reported here. See also here. Since Wayne's agonising and avoidable death, after the highly toxic drug vincristine was injected into his spine when it should have been injected into a vein, staff have been given extra training and there are now strict rules governing the separate storage of spinal and intravenous drugs. But despite improvements in safety, mistakes are still occurring.

Concerns that OTC anti-obesity drug, orlistat, brand name Alli, may cause liver damage.
Extracts from the report:
"The FDA said the most commonly reported adverse reactions included the yellowing of skin or whites of the eyes, weakness and stomach pain.
Between 1999 and 2008, the agency received 32 reports of liver damage, 30 of which occurred outside the US. Of these 27 resulted in hospitalisation.
The agency said it was now conducting a review of the safety of the drug, but stressed no definite association with liver damage had been established at this stage."
"In the UK, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said it had received a total of 1,295 suspected adverse drug reaction reports associated with orlistat, including 137 involving suspected liver damage, since it was licensed in 1998."

Widespread Misrepresentation of Drug Research Findings by Drug Companies Tarnishes Pharmaceutical Industry
Some of the drug companies involved include Merck, Eli Lilly and Pfizer.
Put not your trust in drug companies. They clearly care about their profits, rather than the health of the innocent people who get damaged by their products.

If you have diabetes and you live in the UK I believe you would find this of interest:
Blog entry on Dr John Briffa's blog.
Extracts:
"From April of this year, if GPs can get half of their type 2 diabetic patients to have a HbA1c level (this is a measure of blood sugar control over the preceding 3 months or so) of less than 7 per cent, then the practice gets an additional payment of £3000 ($4250). Prior to this, the target set by the government was 7.5 per cent. Clearly, the government feels that when it comes to HbA1c levels, lower is better."
"It seems that not only is the UK government’s recent move to lower the HbA1c targets for GPs not particularly evidence-based, there is a risk it might actually do more harm than good. The authors of the BMJ piece use some good old-fashioned plain-speak to conclude their piece by stating: “The change of target from 7.5% to 7% should be withdrawn before it wastes resources and possibly harms patients.”"
Increasingly it seems to me that the government favours more and more drug treatment for long-term health problems. This appears to be treating symptoms instead of attacking causes of ill-health. I favour improving diet rather than the ever-increasing prescribing of powerful drugs with all their potential for adverse side-effects.

A little more about the dangers of the prescription drug, Avandia.
Extracts:
"Congress is urged to take steps to help avoid future drug safety issues as it moves toward passage of an FDA bill."
"The warning was posted by Steven Nissen, MD, chair of the Cleveland Clinic's Dept. of Cardiovascular Medicine, who analyzed 42 trials of rosiglitazone, which was approved by the FDA in 1999. Dr. Nissen and Cleveland Clinic statistician Kathy Wolski, MPH, found that the use of the drug was associated with an increased risk of heart attack and cardiovascular death -- by 43% and 64% respectively -- compared with placebo.
The findings represent a particular health concern, Dr. Nissen said, because more than 65% of deaths in diabetic patients are attributed to heart disease."
You can reduce both the risk of and the severity of type 2 diabetes, heart attack, heart disease, obesity and many other chronic, disabling diseases and health conditions by eating less salt.
