Common chemicals found in clothing, non-stick frying pans and food packaging can substantially reduce women's fertility, a new study has found.

Common chemicals found in non-stick frying pans 'can harm fertility'
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are used to make products like Teflon, as well as waterproof clothing, pesticides and upholstery.

Studies have also shown that they have leached in small quantities into the water supply, in part because they are contained in foam used by firefighters.

A new study found that exposure to high levels of the chemicals, which can remain in the environment and the body for decades, could leave women struggling to get pregnant.

Women with high levels of PFCs in their blood were up to one and a half times more likely to have taken more than a year to conceive or required fertility treatment than those with low levels.

The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, warns that the levels of exposure to the chemicals necessary to reduce fertility "are common in developed countries".

Researchers looked at the levels of two of the chemicals, called perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), in the bloodstreams of 1,240 women in Denmark who became pregnant between 1996 and 2002."

Women can improve their fertility by avoiding salt and salty food.

Viagra may harm men's fertility, report warns

Viagra may harm men's fertility, report warns

Extract from the Sunday Telegraph:

"The anti-impotence drug Viagra could harm men's fertility, scientists have warned.

New research suggests that the drug can damage sperm and so prevent some men from starting a family.

The findings mean that young men who take the drug recreationally could be damaging their chances of starting a family.

Likewise, fertility clinics that prescribe the drug to help men produce sperm could be preventing couples from getting pregnant.

The research was led by Dr David Glenn, a consultant gynaecologist at Queen's University Belfast, and will be published in the journal Fertility and Sterility."

Over half of new mothers who die 'are obese': - from the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health

Over half of new mothers who die 'are obese'

(Cemech = the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health)

Extract from The Telegraph:

"More than half of women who die after having a child are overweight, as the obesity epidemic drives up the death rate among new mothers, according to a report."

"Obesity is one of the biggest problems facing fertility doctors and obstetricians because of the difficulty that overweight women have in conceiving and, later, the increased risks they face during pregnancy.

The Cemach report comes after the British Fertility Society called for more women to be told to lose weight before they have IVF in order to help them conceive naturally and give birth safely.

The NHS should not fund IVF treatment for women with a body mass index of more than 35, the society said.

Obese women are at greater risk of miscarriage and are more likely to need a caesarean section delivery, which has its own risks and complications.

They are also at increased risk of high blood pressure and blood clots, both of which can prove fatal. Babies born to obese mothers are more likely to suffer congenital abnormalities, be stillborn or die shortly after birth."

Pregnant women are at increased risk from obesity because of hormone changes during pregnancy - e.g. higher oestrogen levels. - Oestrogen is not just a sex hormone; it is a steroid, and in common with many other steroids, when its concentration in the blood increases, the walls of the veins relax and become more vulnerable to the incursion of extra salt/sodium and its accompanying water. - This extra water is, of course, a form of fluid retention: obesity is caused by fluid retention brought about by sodium/salt sensitivity. These pregnant women have become more sensitive to salt/sodium. This is why dieting does not work. The truth should be told - namely that to lose weight it is necessary to give up dieting and concentrate on reducing salt intake. To avoid unhealthy weight gain and many other health problems, it is very important that pregnant mothers keep their salt intake low.

Obese women and fertility treatment

'Deny obese women fertility treatment'

Extract from the Telegraph article:

"Obese women should be refused fertility treatment and instead told to take more exercise, says a leading advisory organisation.

Overweight mothers-to-be must also lose weight so they are of a healthy size to enable them to give birth safely, the British Fertility Society has said in new guidelines issued today.

The NHS should not fund treatment to obese women who have a body mass index of more than 35 — the equivalent of a 5ft 6in tall woman weighing 15 and a half stone, they said."

It is tragic that obese people are still given advice such as the above advice to take more exercise, because, while exercise can bring lots of benefits, it does not reduce obesity and is often hazardous for people who are obese.

Obesity is not caused by too many calories or too little exercise. It is caused by fluid retention in people sensitive to salt, and it can easily be reduced by giving up eating salt and salty food.

A bowl of tomato soup every day can help boost fertility among men, scientists claim

Bowl of tomato soup a day 'boosts fertility' - Telegraph

Extract:

"A bowl of tomato soup every day can help boost fertility among men, scientists claimed yesterday.

They have discovered that lycopene, which gives tomatoes their bright red colouring, can turn sperm into super-sperm.

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth studied the effect of lycopene in the diet on a random group of six healthy men, with an average age of 42. The men were asked to consume a 400g tin of Heinz cream of tomato soup every day for two weeks.

The researchers, from the university's biomedical science department, said that during the two weeks, levels of lycopene in the men's semen rose between seven and 12 per cent, which was "significant".

They added that further studies should be carried out to discover whether the same boost would be seen in infertile men.

The results, published in the British Journal of Urology, said that infertile men have lower levels of lycopene in their sperm. The study suggests that higher levels of lycopene are associated with increased fertility."

Women whose fertility is low because of being overweight, can easily and safely lose weight by cutting down on salt (sodium) and salty food and therefore boost their fertility and improve their health at the same time.

I must say Heinz cream of tomato soup is absolutely delicious. - I'd love to eat it myself, but as it contains salt I have to avoid it because I am a steroid victim and therefore extremely sensitive to salt.
