Sad story of a young mother who lost her life four days after undergoing gastric surgery in an attempt to lose weight for the sake of her young son.

Mother who vowed to slim for son dies after gastric surgery
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Suzanne Murphy, 29, requested the major operation because she felt her obesity limited the things she could do with her five-year-old son Jacob. After a 16-month wait, she was admitted to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for surgery on October 31, 2006, but died from multiple organ failure four days later.

In a note left under her son's pillow before the operation, Miss Murphy wrote, "I don't want my baggage to become a weight you have to carry, son."

An inquest heard how although she had contracted MRSA in hospital, Miss Murphy was likely to have died from an extreme reaction to the operation, exacerbated by her obesity.

At the hearing in Huddersfield, her sister Linda Richardson said in a statement: "She had put on a lot of weight over the years and felt it was stopping her doing the things she wanted to with Jacob.""

People are given the wrong information about obesity and it leads to this sort of tragedy.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, angina, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Obesity Surgery Can Lead To Memory Loss and Other Problems

Obesity Surgery Can Lead To Memory Loss, Other Problems

Extract:

"Science Daily — Weight loss surgery, such as gastric bypass surgery, can lead to a vitamin deficiency that can cause memory loss and confusion, inability to coordinate movement, and other problems, according to a study published in the March 13, 2007, issue of Neurology®, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The syndrome, called Wernicke encephalopathy, affects the brain and nervous system when the body doesn't get enough vitamin B1, or thiamine. It can also cause vision problems, such as rapid eye movements.

The study found that the syndrome occurs most often in people who have frequent vomiting after the surgery. It usually occurs within one to three months after the surgery, although one case occurred 18 months after surgery.

The study reviewed the scientific literature for all reported cases of the syndrome occurring after obesity surgery. A total of 32 cases had been reported. Many of the people also had neurological symptoms that are not typical of Wernicke encephalopathy, such as seizures, deafness, psychosis, muscle weakness, and pain or numbness in the feet or hands."

But obesity is not caused by overeating. It is caused by the conjunction of salt sensitivity and sodium intake, leading to fluid retention. - Here is an extract from one of my webpages:

"It is over 50 years since steroids were first prescribed and it is beyond belief that most doctors are still unaware in practice of their potential for causing sodium and water retention and morbid obesity and the many other serious health problems attendant on these...

Calorie counting and advice about increasing exercise and reducing fat and carbohydrate intake to reduce obesity are ineffective, counter-productive and often damaging. - See the article in the British Medical Journal of November 2003 BMJ article for actual research on what happens when this advice is followed! - Over 800 obese adults were put on energy deficit diets, given diet sheets and plenty of instruction and help from trained staff, and apparently, visited fortnightly for a year, at the end of which they had GAINED weight! This mirrors the real experience of obese people, viz. - dieting makes you fat.

It is commonly accepted now, except by the 'experts', that less than 5% of dieters actually lose weight, and most gain weight as a result of dieting. - Even the ones who manage to lose weight do not usually improve their health. - See Guardian article for a report in The Guardian of Monday, June 27th 2005. It is about a huge research study of nearly 3000 people over a period of 18 years. The study found that overweight people who diet to reach a healthier weight are more likely to die young than those who remain fat. It also found that dieting causes physiological damage that in the long term can outweigh the benefits of the weight loss.

Contributing to the increase in obesity we have the widespread prescribing of steroids and HRT and other drugs which cause weight gain, and the failure of doctors to adhere to the protocols connected with the prescribing and monitoring of steroids. But pre-eminent, in my opinion, is the catastrophically damaging calorie-reduction advice that continues to be given despite such a wealth of evidence that it is bad advice.

Another possible factor is the increase in the amount of oestrogen in the water table.

Salt produces obesity only in vulnerable people, i.e.

1. People whose veins are weak because of immaturity (babies, children).

2. People whose veins are weak because of steroids, HRT, amitriptyline or certain other prescribed drugs, too readily prescribed, often in very high dose.

3. People whose natural hormone levels are temporarily altered (pregnant women, PMT sufferers).

4. 'Slimmers' - People whose blood vessel walls have been weakened by 'slimming' - i.e. eating insufficient food."

23-stone woman, Sheila Dunn, dies of malnutrition after gastric by-pass surgery

23-stone woman dies of malnutrition after gastric by-pass - Evening Standard article

Extract:

"A 23-stone "super obese" woman died of heart failure as a result of malnutrition just months after undergoing a life-saving gastric bypass operation.

Sheila Dunn, 52, died last August, weighing just over 15 stone, just nine months after the surgery, in November 2005.

The inquest at York heard how she fell into the dangerous category of "super obese" - meaning surgery was the only way she could prevent her weight from killing her."

I can't agree that surgery was the only way forward for this very unfortunate woman. - Had she been given the correct information about what causes obesity and what is best to do to reduce it, she would still be alive.

Here is some SAFE and EFFECTIVE advice for anyone who is obese and wants to lose weight:

'Slimming' is unnecessary, ineffective and potentially harmful. It does not reduce obesity, because obesity is NOT caused by overeating. Obesity is caused by fluid retention, and is best reduced by reducing salt intake. 'Slimming' drugs, appetite suppression and calorie restriction are unnecessary, undesirable and often harmful, even if prescribed by a doctor. Surgery is always dangerous and follow-up care is often inadequate.

I believe that most morbid obesity in adults is caused by the side-effects (notably sodium retention) of many prescribed medications, especially steroids and HRT. When prescribing these dangerous drugs, doctors should warn the patient not to eat salt or salty food while taking the medication because eating salt will result in sodium retention and fluid retention. Unfortunately, doctors do not do this. The safest and most reliable way to lose the weight gained is to eat less salt.

All overweight people suffer from fluid retention. - You can reduce this and lose some of the excess fluid/weight you have in your body by eating less salt/sodium and making sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. - You do NOT need to restrict calories!

ITV's Bariatric Gastric Surgery as treatment for Obesity, Jan 8th 2007. Message for Ricky Grover.

I watched ITV's Tonight with Trevor McDonald last evening. It was a programme about 'Drastic Gastric Surgery', performed as a treatment for obesity, and was presented by the comedian, Ricky Grover, who is himself obese. The government has controversially recommended that severely overweight teenagers go under the knife. Ricky was considering having the surgery to help with his own weight problem. He has tried dieting and exercising but they have not reduced the obesity. The three sorts of operations were explained to us.

Ricky interviewed people who had experienced this surgery. Some were very happy with the surgery and its outcome, but very sadly, one person interviewed was a widower, whose young wife had suffered very great pain and had died as a result of the surgery.

I'm pleased to report that Ricky decided against such surgery for himself.

If you are wanting to lose excess weight, please try this simple, safe, healthy, risk-free, cost-free, drug-free way of losing weight - Lose weight by eating less salt!
