Eat less salt to reduce your risk of cancer

Big 'news' this week is that eating less salt lowers your risk of developing cancer, especially cancer of the stomach. See this BBC News report, where you will read: "Cutting back on salty foods such as bacon, bread and breakfast cereals may reduce people's risk of developing stomach cancer, according to the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF)." I put inverted commas round the word 'news' because my website has been informing people of this fact for many years and so it is hardly news. The usual establishment health message about salt reduction is that reducing salt intake reduces your risk of stroke, heart disease and heart attacks, and that it lowers high blood pressure, and while this health message is undoubtedly correct, it omits a multitude of other health benefits that result from eating less salt, most amazingly omitting the information that cutting salt intake is the fastest, safest way to lose excess weight. - In view of all the publicity about the prevalence and dangers of obesity, it's a real shame (I use the word advisedly) that this weight reduction information is not being promulgated by the public health brigade. Indeed, they almost seem to go out of their way to keep us in the dark about it. (The explanation for the weight loss is that salt reduction reduces the fluid retention which contributes to all overweight. Read about the groups of people that are particularly vulnerable to salt.)

Consumer Affairs lists Kelloggs and Quaker as Worst Children's Cereals

Consumer Affairs reports that Kelloggs and Quaker are the Worst Children's Cereals. It is good to see publicity being given to this important health information. "In a list published by Consumer Affairs, some popular cereals measured between 41.4 and 55.6 percent sugar by weight." - That's a helluvalot of sugar! - I am sure that if a parent were mixing a bowl of breakfast cereal from scratch for their child to eat, it would be a very rare parent who would make half of it sugar. Similarly, I doubt that many parents would add a lot of salt to the bowl. - Yet that is what these breakfast cereal manufacturers routinely do.

As well as the high sugar content damaging children's teeth by causing decay, and both the sugar and salt contributing to child obesity, this unhealthy muck is likely to give children a taste for over-sweetened, salty foodstuffs that will damage their health throughout life. They will be at higher risk of developing hypertension, type 2 diabetes, heart problems, weakened bones, depression, breathlessness and a host of other degenerative conditions that will cause them unnecessary suffering, unhappiness and a shortened lifespan.

Just because this crap is convenient, popular, heavily advertised, sold in brightly coloured packs attractive to children, and just because your children clamour for the stuff, it doesn't mean it's healthy or good for children. - It isn't. - And just because it's legal to sell such unhealthy junk, it doesn't mean it's really OK to feed it to children. - It isn't. - Feeding this stuff to your children is good for the profits of the manufacturers; it is not good for your children's health.

One of my webpages is about children and salt. - You may like to have a look at it.

Kellogg's to reduce high salt content of Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes and other breakfast cereals

Kellogg's is to reduce the high salt content of Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes, Coco Pops and Ricicles, Frosties and Crunchy Nut, from March, as reported here. Well this is very good news. It will save a lot of suffering. The salt content of these junk cereals will still be high though, even after the reduction. "The move follows repeated warnings from the FSA that the nation is eating too much salt, calculating the average daily salt consumption is 8.6g, which is 43% above the recommended limit of 6g. The figure is linked to 14,200 premature deaths a year from conditions linked to high blood pressure, including strokes and heart attacks."

These cereals are especially unsuitable for toddlers and small children because children are more vulnerable to salt than adults are. High salt intake is a primary cause of child obesity.

Beware the Great British SALTY Breakfast!

The Food Standards Agency is warning that British breakfasts tend to be high in salt, as is reported by the Telegraph today: Breakfast is often the saltiest meal of the day.

Rosemary Hignett, the FSA’s head of nutrition, says, among other things, "“We’re not suggesting people stop eating or even cut down on bread or breakfast cereals, as they are important part of a healthy diet." Unfortunately it is quite untrue for her to say that they are an important part of a healthy diet; they are not at all important to a healthy diet. It's about time the FSA clarified its thinking on this matter. They clearly have divided loyalties, but by kowtowing to the Food Industry they subvert the facts they should be presenting to consumers.

Top 10 foods which contribute most to our daily salt intake:

1. Bread

2. Meat products (that is processed meat products, e.g. sausages, bacon)

3. Breakfast cereals (e.g. Kellogg's cornflakes)

4. Cheese

5. Butter/spreads (Buy unsalted butter instead of salted butter.)

6. Baked beans

7. Ready meals

8. Soups

9. Pizzas

10. Crisps and snacks

I've been looking at Kellogg's Optivita. I see that it contains no added salt. - Hurray!

I've been looking at Kellogg's Optivita. I see that it contains no added salt. - Hurray!

It says on the pack "*Kellogg's Optivita can help lower cholesterol because it contains Oat Beta Glucan, the most effective part of the oat." - Well for all I know, that could well be true.

But the MOST IMPORTANT thing is that it contains no added salt/sodium - and lowering sodium intake DEFINITELY lowers cholesterol levels and reduces your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, etc.

I see they have added potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride. (Sodium chloride is the chemical name for common table salt.) - Why can't the Food Standards Agency get some bread manufacturers to make some bread products using potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride, to benefit most people's health? - And don't tell me that salt is necessary for the bread-making process, 'cos I don't believe that for one moment. - I make my own bread, in a bread-maker, and I don't add salt, and it doesn't stop the bread rising or anything. The bread just doesn't keep as long. But bread is better eaten fresh in any case.

Optivita still contains a helluva a lot of sugar though. (Rhetorical question: Why do breakfast cereal manufacturers think that consumers want cereals that are sickly sweet and rot their teeth?)

Breakfast cereal manufacturers may be forced to stop making untrue claims about their products being healthy

As reported here in the Sunday Telegraph, breakfast cereal manufacturers may have to stop making untrue claims about their products being healthy or helping slimmers to lose weight. In fact, most breakfast cereals contain a very high proportion of salt and and this is harmful for most consumers, especially children. Salt is the constituent of processed food that contributes most heavily to obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a host of other illnesses and ill health in general.

There are a few breakfast cereals that do not contain added salt. These include porridge, Ready Brek, Shredded Wheat and Shreddies.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver damage and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! These are healthy breakfast cereals that will not make you gain weight - Shredded Wheat, porridge, Ready Brek

But don't put salt in the porridge/porage! - Overweight people should avoid salt and salty food, so as not to increase fluid retention and hypertension.

Most other breakfast cereals contain a lot of salt and so will tend to make fat people fatter and will raise the blood pressure of people who have high blood pressure. - These 'baddie' breakfast cereals include Kelloggs Crunchy Nut Clusters (honey and nut), Kelloggs Bran Flakes, Kelloggs Rice Krispies, Kelloggs Fruit n fibre, Kelloggs Cornflakes and other brands of cornflakes too, Cheerios, Special K, Quaker Oat Krunchies. (I don't know how the manufacturers get away with claiming that Special K helps you lose weight when you have it instead of 2 of your 3 meals in a day for 2 weeks...(o: - It contains a high proportion of salt so it cannot help you to lose excess weight.)

Maybe you think you don't eat much salt/sodium? - I invite you to have a look at the labels on the packs of food in your store-cupboards. - You'll be surprised...

Obesity is a very serious disease syndrome caused by the medical profession and its acolytes, by the dieting industry, and by pharmaceutical companies, all of which have supplied harmful misinformation to innocent members of the public and then blamed their victims for the harm caused...

The processed food industry has been equally culpable in doing harm by adding far too much salt to their products.

While women and men continue to be constantly misinformed by the foolish, unscientific 'experts', then obesity will continue to increase both in incidence and in severity. The best way to extend your life-span and improve your health is to cut out salt as far as you can and also to avoid prescribed pharmaceutical drugs as far as possible.

To lose excess weight it is necessary to eat less salt and salty food because this will reduce the body's fluid retention. This is the safe, sure, healthy way to lose and it works like magic.

DON'T DIET! - Dieting is unnecessary, harmful and IT DOES NOT WORK!

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!
