Study links tricyclic antidepressants to increased risk of CVD
Since antidepressants do not work anyway, doctors should not be prescribing them. Don't doctors ever read research about antidepressants? Don't they care about the harm their prescribed drugs cause their unfortunate patients? The very tiny likelihood of benefit from them is far, far outweighed by the harm they do, and the risk of further harm, including brain damage in later life.

Scientists call for worldwide policy change on daily recommendations for vitamin D intake
International experts have again called out for an increase in daily recommendations for Vitamin D, which they say is crucial to reduce the risk of a host of diseases. The latest call comes from scientists in Europe and the US, who say that higher intake levels of the vitamin could help protect against conditions such as childhood rickets, adult osteomalacia, cancer, autoimmune type-1 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, obesity and muscle weakness. Writing in the July 28 issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine, the authors propose worldwide policy changes to increase recommended intake levels of the sunshine vitamin. This, they said, would reduce the frequency of certain diseases, increase longevity and reduce medical costs.

Overweight children as young as 3 are showing signs of cardiovascular disease risk factors
article on Medicine.Net.com
It is important to protect small children from the bad effects of a salty diet because salt does much more harm to children than to adults and also because if they develop a taste for salty food early in life it will be harder for them to lower their salt intake as they get older.
Childhood obesity associated with heart disease results from a diet too high in salt.
When children become fat it is essentially because they are eating salty food. Children are especially vulnerable to salt because of their small size and small blood volume, and because their blood vessels are weaker than those of adults. Salt, and the water it attracts to it, can more easily distend weak blood vessels than fully mature ones. The resulting increase in blood volume and other fluid retention results in weight gain, as well as higher blood pressure and many other undesirable consequences. The smaller the child, the less salt they should have - and a baby, of course, should have no salt at all. - Babies can die if they are fed salty food.
Unfortunately bread contains a lot of salt and most families eat quite a lot of bread because of using it for sandwiches in packed lunches, and for toast, etc. Because of its high salt content bread is not a healthy food for little children or for anyone who is overweight. Some bread manufacturers have lowered the salt content of certain loaves, but most bread still usually contains 0.5g or more of sodium per 100g. This is too much. - Always check on the packet; look for the lowest sodium content.
Cheese is often recommended as being good for children because it contains calcium, but cheese is not really good for children because it has a high salt content. So don't give them a lot of it. Children can get plenty of calcium by drinking milk and by eating yogurt (but avoid the sort of yogurt that has lots of chemical additives).
There are no calories in salt - but if you cut down on salt you will easily lose weight. If you cut down on calories you will not lose weight.

Potassium lowers blood pressure. New study
Well I've been telling people for years, both in this blog and on my website (www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk) that potassium lowers blood pressure and that the way in which it does that is by displacing some excess sodium from the bloodstream.
Anyway, the link I have given from the scientistlive.com website gives interesting information from a new study. Obviously the main dietary change necessary to lower high blood pressure is to reduce sodium intake, but when lower sodium is accompanied by plenty of potassium this lowers high blood pressure even more.
I recommend you read the whole article, but here, at any rate, is an extract from it:
"The new study "is a quantum leap in the quality of the data compared to what we have had before," Whelton said.
Whelton was a member of a recent Institute of Medicine panel that set dietary recommendations for salt and potassium. The panel said healthy 19-to-50 year-old adults should consume no more than 2,300 milligrammes of sodium per day -- equivalent to one teaspoon of table salt. More than 95 percent of American men and 75 percent of American women in this age range exceed this amount.
To lower blood pressure and blunt the effects of salt, adults should consume 4.7 grams of potassium per day unless they have a clinical condition or medication need that is a contraindication to increased potassium intake. Most American adults aged 31-to-50 consume only about half as much as recommended in the Institute of Medicine report. Changes in diet and physical activity should be under the supervision of a health care professional.
Good potassium sources include fruits, vegetables, dairy foods and fish. Foods that are especially rich in potassium include potatoes and sweet potatoes, fat-free milk and yogurt, tuna, lima beans, bananas, tomato sauce and orange juice. Potassium also is available in supplements.
Whelton is among the nation's top experts on high blood pressure. He has published more than 400 papers on the subject, and has been the principal investigator on more than $100 million of studies funded by the National Institutes of Health."

Chicken soup helps to lower blood pressure, scientists have found. So does eating less salt and salty food.
Article in the Telegraph
Extracts:
"The soup, sometimes dubbed Grandma's penicillin, has been used as a folk remedy to cure all ills.
But researchers have discovered that the chicken leg meat used to make the soup contains a chemical known as an ACE inhibitor, which lowers blood pressure.
These inhibitors reduce tension in muscles which in turn reduce the tension on blood vessels and the blood that runs through them.
Ai Saiga, a scientist at Hiroshima University, carried out tests on rats and found proteins produced a significant and prolonged decrease in blood pressure."
"High blood pressure is thought to be the main factor of cardiovascular disease and stroke. It is reported that there are more than one billion people in the world with the condition."
The best and most effective drug-free way to reduce high blood pressure is to avoid salt and salty food.

Scientists believe that one in three of all those at risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the next decade have not been diagnosed.
Article in the Telegraph
Extract:
"Earlier this year ministers announced plans to introduce heart screening checks for people aged 40 to 74 across the country.
Professor Andrew Neil, who led the research team, said: "Our findings reinforce the need for a national CVD risk assessment programme and we welcome the announcement by the Department of Health that plans are being put in place to institute primary care checks.
"Our research found that 75 per cent of men and 45 per cent of women who were over 50 already had CVD or diabetes, were taking cholesterol or blood pressure drugs or were at high risk of developing CVD.""
The common significant causative factor in all these health problems is salt sensitivity. Unfortunately people are very rarely told about this. - You can reduce your risk of all these health problems and many more by cutting down on salt.

Migraine sufferers 'have increased risk of heart attacks and strokes'
Extract from the Telegraph:
"Millions of people who suffer from migraines have a greatly increased risk of suffering heart attacks and strokes, according to new research.
People who have the debilitating headaches just once a month are one and a half times more likely to go on to suffer a heart attack.
Those who have a migraine once a week are three times more likely to have a stroke than those who don’t suffer, the Harvard Medical School study found.
Around nine million people in the UK suffer from migraines and 80 per cent of those - some 7.2 million - have an attack at least once a month.
The findings of the study, which is one of the first to make a link between the frequency of migraines and serious illness, could lead to increased monitoring of migraine sufferers and preventative treatment to reduce the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
Dr Tobias Kurth, from Harvard Medical School in Boston, who led the study, said: “Our findings suggest that migraine frequency may be an indicator for increased risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly ischaemic stroke.""
Well I've been linking migraines with strokes and heart attacks and other serious illnesses for years. - The risk of and severity of all of these health problems (which are all connected to weakened blood vessels) are reduced or eliminated by avoiding salt and salty food.

More questioning of the desirability of using statins
Extract:
"The effectiveness of drugs such as statins in treating the elderly has been questioned by a group of medical experts.
In today's British Medical Journal, they said: "By using preventive treatments to reduce the risk of a particular cause of death in elderly people, are we simply changing the cause of death rather than prolonging life?"
The authors - senior lecturers from New Zealand and Devon and a London GP - raise doubts about the government's aim to reduce the number of people dying from the "epidemic" of cardiovascular disease by 40% by 2010. They argue that the cause of death will probably be "substituted" for something else, such as cancer."

Oh dear! - More risk of being prescribed statins...
Extract:
"Millions of people could be prescribed cholesterol-reducing statins under guidelines published today by the Government's drug-rationing watchdog.
GPs will be told to draw up a "systematic strategy" to identify which patients on their books are most at risk of developing heart disease.
These patients will then be called to their local clinic or health centre for blood tests to measure their cholesterol levels, the guidance from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) will say.
People who are found to have a 20 per cent or greater chance of developing cardiovascular disease over the next decade will be prescribed statins to try to reduce their cholesterol."
The usefulness and safety of statins is debatable. - Click on the statins tab at the end of this entry and read the evidence.
High cholesterol is caused by salt sensitivity and can be lowered by eating less salt and salty food. - This costs nothing and is completely safe, unlike taking statins...
Heart disease is also best treated or avoided by cutting out salt and salty food.

Diabetics warned about heart disease
Extract:
"Almost two million Britons with diabetes are at risk of dying from heart disease, it was claimed yesterday.
The figure follows an assessment of how well cardiovascular risk factors are being managed in people with diabetes.
A report from the charity Diabetes UK said many diabetics are failing to reach target levels for key risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol. As a result, 80 per cent of the 2.2 million diabetics in Britain were likely to die from cardiovascular disease."
The best way to guard against heart disease is to give up eating salt and salty food. This also reduces obesity, lowers blood pressure and improves cholesterol levels.
