More about Conflicts of Interest within the Medical Profession

"In 1996, shortly after we began tracking the pharmaceutical industry, we spent time looking at obesity research and the latest diet pills. In doing so, we noticed that a panel that was assembled by the government to develop a guideline for the overweight known as the Body Mass Index. And it was populated by experts, nearly all of whom had a financial tie to a drugmaker selling or developing such pills. The finding, of course, was not all that new, but the practice continues, according to a new study in BMJ, which examined panels responsible for generating clinical practice guidelines on screening and/or treatment for high cholesterol or diabetes in the US and Canada between 2000 and 2010. A good many of the panelists - and panel chairs - had conflicts of interest. But not all were disclosed."

Incredibly irresponsible suggestion to provide statin medication to accompany meals in fast food outlets

BBC News reports that Dr Darrel Francis et al are recommending this measure to reduce the harm to health caused by eating junk food. Statins are pharmaceutical drugs that are prescribed for the purpose of lowering cholesterol levels and are claimed by this means to be drugs that benefit heart health. But as these researchers must certainly know, statins only rarely reduce health problems. Much more commonly they damage the health of the innocent patients who take them. Evidence for this - from reputable sources - abounds on the internet. Click on the statins link beneath this blogpost to see some of the evidence. Click here and here and here for a few more examples, and look up Dr Malcolm Kendrick's strong views on the subject of cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Anyone who wants to lower their cholesterol levels can do so without drugs. Simply cutting down on salt/sodium and salty food lowers cholesterol and also, much more importantly, lowers high blood pressure, lowers the risk of heart disease, heart attack, dementia, type 2 diabetes and many other degenerative illnesses, and reduces overweight by reducing fluid retention. And there are no adverse side-effects to cutting down on salt.

Statins can cause liver and kidney problems

New UK data highlights range of possible problems associated with cholesterol-lowering drugs
Cholesterol-lowering drugs taken by millions of Britons could cause liver, kidney, muscle and eye problems, research suggests.
Read article in the Guardian (UK)
Comment: Side-effects already known to be caused by statins include insomnia, constipation, diarrhoea, headaches, loss of appetite and loss of sensation or pain in the nerve endings of the hands and feet. Despite this, however, cholesterol-lowering drugs have become the single largest business segment of the pharmaceutical drug business, with the global sales of statins now surpassing 200 billion dollars per year. To achieve these sales, the entire cholesterol business is built on fear – the fear that cholesterol causes heart attacks.

If you would prefer to avoid the risks involved in taking statins, you can easily, rapidly and significantly lower your high cholesterol without taking any drugs, without cost, without risk and without adverse side-effects, simply by avoiding added salt and salty food. By minimising your intake of salt/sodium, you not only lower high cholesterol, you also lower high blood pressure and lower your risk of heart attacks and heart disease, reduce the size of an enlarged heart, and reduce the risk of stroke, type 2 diabetes and many other degenerative diseases. And reducing salt intake has the added bonus of reducing excess weight - because lowered salt intake reduces fluid retention. (Some of the excess water in the body is excreted in the urine. See how to Lose weight safely.)

AstraZeneca’s statin drug, Crestor, has been approved by the US FDA for people who don’t have high cholesterol.

That's another sinister victory for the drug industry. Those who take statins risk painful and incurable side-effects from the drugs. - Click on my 'statins' label directly under this blogpost to read further about reasons to be wary of taking statins.

The fastest, safest, most effective way to lower high cholesterol levels is to minimise your salt intake. - Avoid salt and salty food. Read here about one guy's experience of doing this: http://rayhayden.us/ete_insights/lowsodium.php

You can reduce your risk of most degenerative diseases by
1) avoiding prescription drugs unless they are really necessary
2) minimising your intake of salt/sodium and salty food
3) avoiding dieting

It's good to see Peter Duncan speaking out against statins.

Well done the Daily Mail for reporting Peter Duncan's sensible decision not to take statins to lower his cholesterol level. Instead he believes it's better to improve your diet and fitness.

He is quoted as saying, "I am naturally sceptical of medical prognosis and drug companies' product claims - not even an aspirin has passed my lips for many years. I believe the body should look after itself," and also, "I like to imagine the medical profession has dreamed up the perfect scam. Create an unsatisfactory condition (high cholesterol); make a drug that can lower it (statins); play down the unfortunate side effects with 'biased' research (medical trials) and on the back of this they can create a whole cholesterol food industry and make billions from selling expensive prescriptions."

Peter Duncan is clearly a man after my own heart. Like him I am extremely sceptical about the claims of drug companies; they have too often been found to be falsifying results and their products harming the unfortunate people who take them.

And very obviously, a high cholesterol level is not caused by deficiency of statins...(o:

If your cholesterol level is high you can lower it without the use of drugs: - if you cut down on salt and salty food this will lower it safely and easily and will benefit your health in many other ways too.

Statins are causing muscle damage in some patients.

Science Daily reports on a study "by researchers from the University of Bern, Switzerland and the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, [who] looked at muscle biopsies from 83 patients, 20 of whom had never taken statins. They found significant muscle injury in patients who had taken statins, including several who had discontinued medication before the biopsy."

Many patients experience a lot of adverse side-effects from statins (drugs taken to lower harmful cholesterol levels and thereby to reduce cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, etc.). Many discontinue the medication because they find the side-effects too unpleasant. And of course, the side-effects can do lasting harm, even if you discontinue them.

Prescription drugs including many steroids, many antidepressants, anti-psychotics and epilepsy drugs as well as other pharmaceuticals, are a major cause of high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, cardiovascular disease, depression, cancer, brittle bones, etc. - Avoid taking prescription drugs unless they are absolutely necessary.

The most effective and the cheapest way to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart attack, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and a multitude of other chronic health problems is to avoid eating salt and salty food. This is also a completely safe measure to take; reducing sodium intake has no bad side effects whatsoever. - You will also find, if you are overweight, that reducing salt reduces your excess weight.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver damage and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! Healthcare costs and the myth of prevention that involves multi-screening, multi-testing and high NNT drugs like statins

Healthcare costs and the myth of prevention that involves multi-screening, multi-testing and the high cost of medication like statins: the Wall Street Journal carries this thoughtful article.

See also
www.slate.com article - It explains 'relative risk' and in particular considers whether the prescribing of statins as treatment for high cholesterol levels is justified. - A statistical tool you may never have heard of is NNT - the 'number needed to treat'.

True prevention of avoidable/chronic illness and avoidable disability entails good nutrition, along with drastic reduction of sodium intake, e.g. by cooking fresh food instead of microwaving convenience foods high in salt, and eating plenty of fruit and unsalted vegetables. Above all, avoid dieting! - Dieting is unnecessary, ineffective, and, more often than not, harmful.

It's also a good idea to avoid prescription drugs unless they are absolutely necessary, because so often their side-effects include obesity/sodium retention/fluid retention/salt sensitivity and a host of attendant chronic illness.

Prof Peter Weissberg is again wanting statins to be prescribed more widely.

This Telegraph article reports that Prof Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, is suggesting that prescribing statins should be considered, in order to protect against blood clots in the veins of the legs and in the lungs. This guy does an awful lot of suggesting that statins be taken. - Forgive me for being cynical and asking, is there something in it for him?

I wish that as medical director of the British Heart Foundation, he would be as ardent to advise people to avoid salt and salty food - the simplest and most effective way to lower cholesterol levels and high blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attacks - as he is to suggest prescribing drugs with many adverse side-effects to people who are not ill, in the questionable expectation that the drugs may possibly prevent illness.

Many older people are being prescribed medications unnecessarily and without sufficient consideration of adverse side-effects.

Elderly people are being turned into patients by GPs blindly following guidelines to hand out pills for high blood pressure and cholesterol, a professor has said. The ‘paternalistic society’ and medicine by ‘tick box’ has overtaken personal advice, Michael Oliver, emeritus professor of cardiology at Edinburgh University wrote in the British Medical Journal online. He said many of the drugs including those for high blood pressure and statins for raised cholesterol have side effects which many elderly people find debilitating.

Elderly patients are being harmed because doctors prescribe them too many drugs.

Doctors 'too reliant on prescribing drugs'
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Some patients are receiving too little advice about cutting down on smoking or reducing their weight as doctors increasingly reach for pills to treat them, according to the study, published in the Lancet medical journal.

The report comes just a week after a leading expert warned that millions of elderly patients were being prescribed drugs that they did not need, for conditions ranging from high blood pressure to high cholesterol or diabetes.

Professor Michael Oliver warned that a "tick-box culture" was leading to overtreatment and unnecessary anxiety for many older people."

I'm all in favour of cutting down on prescription drugs. They do far more harm than good.

Visitor/s from the British Heart Foundation have been reading my blog and my webpages because of my critical blog entry about them yesterday.

I see I've had someone from the British Heart Foundation visiting the blogpost I made about them yesterday. They've also visited my website. They appear to have spent a lot of time reading my stuff.

Hopefully they will now consider altering the misinformation about obesity on their website.

I've also noticed they don't mention cutting down on salt/sodium in their advice about how to lower high cholesterol on this page http://www.bhf.org.uk/keeping_your_heart_healthy/preventing_heart_disease/cholesterol.aspx, and yet this is probably the most effective dietary adjustment you could make to lower your cholesterol level as it will simultaneously reduce high cholesterol, reduce excess weight, reduce high blood pressure and reduce any fat retention.

Yes, I know they mention lowering salt intake elsewhere on their website, but they do not give it the importance it merits. Indeed they've only been mentioning salt intake at all for a relatively few years, because I certainly remember some years ago visiting one of their charity shops and picking up one of their leaflets there which had no mention whatsoever of salt intake. I decided against donating anything to them as their advice was so flawed.

And this is their page about diabetes - http://www.bhf.org.uk/keeping_your_heart_healthy/preventing_heart_disease/diabetes.aspx - Here again, no mention is made of the importance of low salt intake in preventing type 2 diabetes and managing diabetes.

Eggs have an "insignificant" effect on cholesterol levels, according to scientists, who are now recommending people to eat as many eggs as they like.

You can now go to work on an egg every day, scientists say
from the Daily Telegraph

Extract:

"The research has come as a huge relief to the egg industry, which in recent decades has struggled to persuade people that eggs are a healthy, nutritious food.

Many authorities are still recommending that consumers should not eat more than about three eggs a week – out of date advice that failed to reflect the evidence, the scientists said.

Only last year the advertising watchdog banned an attempt to re-run the classic advert from 1957: Go to Work on an Egg.

The television advert, staring Tony Hancock and penned by the then junior copy writer Fay Weldon, was deemed no longer appropriate on the grounds that eating an egg for breakfast every day is not a "varied diet".

In the mid-1960s, Britons ate an average of about five eggs a week, but health advice helped drive that figure down to less than two in the mid-1990s.

However, in the study published on Tuesday, Juliet Gray and Bruce Griffin of Surrey University said that it was a "myth" that eating lots of eggs increased people's cholesterol level in most instances."

So where are the prominent apologies from the health advisers to the egg farmers?

This is the homepage about British eggs: http://www.britegg.co.uk/

- The health agencies' advice has damaged the egg industry for many years now - and has also damaged ordinary people's health by limiting their intake of eggs, a highly nutritious, versatile and easy to cook food. - Let's keep an eye open for those apologies - though I suspect that they will be as rare as hen's teeth! - I wonder if the egg farmers will be suing the negligent health agencies?

But this is typical. - 'Health experts' give advice prominently and emphatically, yet, as in this case, there wasn't a shred of evidence to support their warnings against more than 2 or 3 eggs a week.

It's the same as their advice that calorie reduction reduces obesity. - IT DOESN'T! - It's sodium reduction that reduces obesity. - And sodium reduction also reduces high cholesterol...(o: - So...

First comprehensive paper on statins' adverse effects released

A paper co-authored by Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and director of UC San Diego's Statin Study group cites nearly 900 studies on the adverse effects of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), a class of drugs widely used to treat high cholesterol. The result is a review paper, currently published in the on-line edition of American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs, that provides the most complete picture to date of reported side effects of statins, showing the state of evidence for each.

Extract:

"The eyes act as little windows into the body. By looking at the blood vessels on the back of the eye you can assess the state of the cardiovascular system and see the damage caused by high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. As the eyes are so close to the brain and supplied by a nerve coming straight from it, a host of neurological conditions are also evident from simply looking into them. Multiple sclerosis, for example, is often first detected by an optician."
