There are some things you wouldn't want even if they were given away free, aren't there?

There are some things you wouldn't want even if they were given away free, aren't there? In no particular order, for me, these would include skimmed milk (aka greyish water), margarine (aka factory-produced slime pretending to be food), GM products, artificial sweeteners, cornflakes, Marmite, caviar, anchovies, Subway sandwiches, mulled wine (best poured down the sink, imo), Coke (aka toilet cleaner), Diet Coke and MSG (monosodium glutamate).

breakfast cup of coffee and a muffin on the way to work contains a third of the recommended daily salt limit, a study has warned.

Breakfast of coffee and a muffin 'can contain high levels of salt'
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"The worst offenders among those tested were a Starbucks Cinnamon Swirl, which contained 1.74g of salt, the equivalent of two rashers of bacon, and Costa's Raspberry and White Chocolate Muffin, which contained 1.71g.

But the study warns that a "healthy" home breakfast can also be high in salt.

Researchers found that those who kick-started the day with a bowl of cornflakes and two slices of toast with butter and Marmite took in half of their recommended daily salt limit, around 2.8g.

Those who ate the same meal with jam instead of Marmite still took in a third of their daily salt limit, around 1.8g.

A full English breakfast can contain more than the daily recommended limit of salt, the study also found.

A fry-up which includes two sausages, two rashers of bacon, two slices of black pudding, one fried egg, mushrooms, baked beans, a tomato and one slice of toast with butter, contains around 6.1 g of salt.

Carrie Bolt, a nutritionist with CASH, said: "When eating breakfast away from home, customers shunning greasy spoons for coffee shop breakfasts could actually be eating more salt and would be better off choosing lower salt options from the greasy spoon menu."

Doctors recommend that salt intake be limited because it can push up blood pressure levels, increasing the risk of heart disease or stroke."

Pupils of Pontrhydfendigaid Primary School will no longer be able to have Marmite on toast at their breakfast club because of its high salt content

Marmite has been removed from the menu of a Welsh school breakfast club
Article from walesonline

Extracts:

"A SCHOOL has banned its pupils from eating Marmite because it says the spread contains too much salt.

The pupils at Pontrhydfendigaid Primary School in Cardiganshire, have been tucking into Marmite on toast at the school’s breakfast club since the start of term."

"A spokesman for the school said they had begun serving Marmite in the breakfast club, but it was now off the morning menu after the salt content was highlighted.

He said the food served at school breakfast clubs are based on Welsh Assembly Government guidelines – and Marmite is not included.

He said: “Breakfast clubs are intended to improve the health and concentration of children – to assist in the raising of standards of learning and attainment.

“But anything served must be healthy and nutritionally balanced.

“Marmite is not included on the list of items as it does include a high level of salt.""

This is a sensible move by the school. Children already have too high an intake of salt from eating cheese and crisps and other salty food/snacks and for food at school also to be highly salty would be very bad for the children's health. Indeed, the toast itself is high in salt! Salt and salty food are the primary cause of child obesity and many other health problems.

Goodies and Baddies share the same stable...

Funny how big companies contain both 'good' brands and very unhealthy 'bad' brands - in my humble opinion, of course. - You may think differently, but I consider any highly salted 'food' to be 'bad' and harmful.

Take Unilever UK Ltd brands for example.

Some of their 'goodies' IMO:

Dove, Vaseline Intensive Care, Domestos.

Some of their 'baddies' IMO:

Pot Noodle, Peperami, Marmite, Knorr.

By the way, I looked up the ingredients of their Hellmann's "Olive Oil Mayonnaise". - Seems a misleading sort of name/description to me. - What do you think? - Here is the list of ingredients in Hellmann's "Olive Oil Mayonnaise" I have copied from their website:
Ingredients

Vegetable Oil (72%), Water, Pasteurised Egg and Egg Yolk (8%), Extra Virgin Olive Oil (5%), Spirit Vinegar, Salt, Sugar, Lemon Juice, Mustard Flavouring, Antioxidant (Calcium Disodium EDTA), Paprika Extract.

More than 14 times as much Vegetable Oil as Olive Oil...(o: - Surely it would be more accurate to describe it as "Vegetable Oil Mayonnaise?

Marmite, cheddar cheese, raisins, Corn Flakes and honey are to remain banned from being advertised during children's television programmes...

This is crazy! - Raisins, honey and Marmite banned from children's television adverts
Article in the Telegraph

I'm all in favour of banning Marmite ads: Marmite is laden with salt and therefore very bad for children. But raisins and other dried fruits are very low in sodium/salt and are high in potassium and therefore tend to reduce the risk of child obesity, not increase it. - Child obesity, like all obesity, is caused by fluid retention, not by fat/sugar/calories. - See this page about children and obesity - http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/children.html

And the ads for
Kellogg's Special K Sustain are allowed! - Yet this cereal is very high in sodium - 0.45g sodium per 100g product. - See http://www.kelloggs.co.uk/products/specialk/cereal/special_k_sustain.aspx

Extract from the article:
"However, the FSA said monitoring calories per 100 grams was the most effective way of cutting down on childhood obesity."
This is categorically untrue! - The most effective way to cut down on child obesity (and adult obesity) is to see that they avoid eating salt and salty food. - I don't know how the FSA (Food Standards Agency) gets away with giving the wrong information about the cause of child obesity. - Monitoring calories has absolutely no role to play in reducing child obesity.

If your child is overweight, it's best if you give them meals that are low in salt. - There is no need for them to go on a diet.

Children would be better not eating salted nuts and salted crisps, and not eating Marmite sandwiches, because Marmite contains a lot of salt. Salt is usually more harmful to children than it is to adults. Salt can cause fluid retention and that means unhealthy weight gain.

See http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/children.html

Junk food TV ad ban will cover under-16s: Ofcom

Junk food TV ad ban will cover under-16s

Extract:

"New rules designed to reduce children's exposure to "junk food" adverts on television were announced yesterday — and immediately came under fire from the food industry and health campaigners.

The regulator Ofcom said the ban will stop commercials for foods high in salt, sugar and fat being broadcast during children's programmes and shows "of particular appeal to viewers under 16".

This is part of a Government drive to reduce childhood obesity after evidence that television adverts have a modest effect on youngsters' diets.

The food industry called the rules ridiculous and disproportionate. Under the formula used to define junk food, adverts for cheddar cheese, Marmite, ketchup, raisins and porridge would be banned."

See also Junk food ad rules too watered down, say health groups

If adverts for "raisins and porridge" would be banned that would be strange indeed because both of these foods are low in salt and so are very good for children and would certainly not cause obesity in children! - Cheddar cheese, Marmite, ketchup are all high in salt/sodium and so are unsuitable foods for children, especially if the children are already overweight.

When children become fat it is essentially because they are eating salty food. Children are especially vulnerable to salt because of their small size and small blood volume, and because their blood vessels are weaker than those of adults. Salt, and the water it attracts to it, can more easily distend weak blood vessels than fully mature ones. The resulting increase in blood volume and other fluid retention results in weight gain, as well as higher blood pressure and many other undesirable consequences. The smaller the child, the less salt they should have - and a baby, of course, should have no salt at all. - Babies can die if they are fed salty food.

Because children have much smaller bodies than adults it would be best if they had no more than half as much salt as adults. Most children, however, have much more than this because they eat so many snacks and instant foods. Just one cheeseburger, for instance, contains almost double the recommended daily salt maximum for children. There are high amounts of salt in packet soups, instant noodles, ketchup and sauces, sausages, burgers and savoury snacks. Fat children will lose weight fast if they eat less salt. And even faster still if they eat plenty of fresh fruit and unsalted vegetables, because these are rich in potassium, which helps to displace sodium from the body.
