Obesity: New Vulnerable Group

I see that there's a new Vulnerable Group reared its head - or swished its little tails! - There are some genetically modified mice that are very vulnerable to becoming obese because of a mutation in a particular gene, reported here. Well I don't think we need to trouble ourselves about that particular vulnerability, though one feels sympathy for the mice having their genes damaged, apparently in the cause of providing some information for the drug industry to avail itself of in its never-ending trawl for profitable products to unload on innocent citizens. Unless we allow drug researchers or their mates who work in genetic engineering to interfere with our genes we are unlikely to suffer this genetic problem ourselves, or - perish the thought! - any of us is tricked into eating any of these GM mice and something untoward happens... (Memo: best to avoid eating GM foods, whether animal or vegetable, and best to avoid eating animals that have been fed GM crops. Since no one knows what could happen, the precautionary principle should be applied.)

The Vulnerable Groups in whom I am most interested are those who are vulnerable to becoming obese because of salt sensitivity or sodium retention. The groups of people vulnerable to salt are babies and children, people who take or who have taken certain prescribed steroids, including prednisone and prednisolone, or certain other prescribed drugs, women who take or have taken HRT or other oestrogen-containing drugs such as some contraceptive medications, people who take or have taken amitriptyline or other tricyclic antidepressants or some other psychotropic/psychoactive drugs, pregnant mothers, PMT sufferers and people who ate salt as children. These groups need to minimise their salt intake. They will lose weight easily if they eat less salt and salty food.

In obesity, the brain is unaware of body fat, it is claimed.

In obesity, the brain is unaware of body fat - from the New Scientist.

Extract:

"A high-fat diet can desensitise the brain to appetite-suppressing hormones, effectively leaving the brain unaware of obesity, a study in mice has found. "

I must confess I don't think research on mice can have a lot of relevance to what happens in people. - I must also assert firmly that appetite suppression is a dangerous route for obese people to take in the hope of losing excess weight, whatever anyone else says.

Here are safe, effective, reliable ways to lose excess weight, both of which work on real people. (I have no idea whether they work on mice!)

1. - Eat less salt/sodium and make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. - This removes some of the excess water from the blood stream, i.e. it reduces the sodium retention and fluid retention which are the cause of obesity. You will lose weight fast! This is the best way of losing weight because it is addresses the actual cause of the obesity.

2. - Increase the amount of calcium-rich food you eat. - This has the effect of increasing the proportion of fat excreted in the faeces. - This was a research finding covered in the recent BBC2 series The Truth about Food. - See http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/humanbody/truthaboutfood/ The researchers recommended eating more low fat yoghurt as a good source of calcium. (Don't get that VERY low fat yoghurt that is laden with dodgy chemical additives - just get the ordinary low fat yoghurt.)

Chemicals 'could be the cause of obesity' says Prof Frederick vom Saal, of Missouri-Columbia University, after experiments with mice and bisphenol-A

Chemicals 'could be the cause of obesity' says Prof Frederick vom Saal, of Missouri-Columbia University, after experiments with mice and bisphenol-A

Extract:

"He told the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Francisco: "If you look at the increase in the incidence of obesity and the increase in man-made chemicals that have these kind of endocrine disrupting effects they absolutely parallel each other."

"At high doses, the chemical, used in CD cases, mobile phones, sunglasses and babies' bottles, can interfere with hormone balance. Campaigners have called for it to banned and linked it to several diseases, including breast cancer and diabetes."

The chemicals that are most likely to result in obesity are prednisolone and other medically prescribed steroids, HRT, amitriptyline and some other anti-depressants, and certain other drugs, often prescribed inappropriately and in high dose, often for too long a time, by physicians with inadequate knowledge of the potential adverse side-effects of the drugs. These doctors frequently fail to monitor the progress of these patients adequately or even at all! - And most crucially they fail to give the patient the VITALLY important information that these drugs tend to cause sodium and water retention leading to extreme salt sensitivity and morbid obesity, and so while taking the drugs no salt or salty food should be eaten.

Obesity is not caused by eating too much. - It is usually caused/initiated by salt sensitivity and fluid retention, and is best reduced by abandoning the calorie myth and concentrating on cutting down on salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
