Eating chocolate could help your with your mental arithmetic.

Read here in the Telegraph about how chocolate could be a help to students revising for exams. The researchers believe it's because chocolate contains flavanols, part of a group of chemicals called polyphenols, and that they work by increasing the flow of blood into the brain.

Well I've long considered that chocolate is very good for people, and contrary to what we are usually told by 'experts', chocolate is not fattening. - And that's because it usually contains either no salt at all or very little salt. - Read on!

Drinking a couple of cups of tea a day can halve the risk of dementia, according to new research.

Tea halves the risk of dementia, study shows
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Scientists found those who drank two or three cups of black tea a day were less than half as likely to exhibit early signs of dementia as those who never or rarely drank it.

But drinking coffee had no protective effect on the brain, the study found.

The scientists concluded that it was not the caffeine in tea that had a beneficial effect, but compounds called polyphenols.

Previous studies have already suggested polyphenols in green tea can protect against dementia and Alzheimer's, which affect an estimated 750,000 in Britain today.

That number is set to double over the next 40 years as Britain's population ages.

But this is the first time a comparative study has been made on the protective effects of black tea, by far the most popular variety drunk here.

Britons drink 168 million cups of black tea a day, although most of us put a splash of milk in it.

You can also reduce your risk of dementia by cutting down on salt and salty food.

Organic fruit and vegetables contain more vitamin C, study finds

Organic fruit has more vitamin C, study finds - Telegraph

Extract:

"Further evidence in support of the health benefits of organic fruit and vegetables has been published by an international team of researchers.

They found that organic carrots, apples and peaches contained higher levels of vitamin C and flavonoids, compounds with antioxidant properties said by some scientists to protect against heart attacks and cancer.

Last week US researchers revealed that organic kiwi fruit have significantly more vitamin C and polyphenols - linked to reduced cholesterol, improved circulation and lower cancer risks - than non-organic produce."

Food scientists have done tests and say they have evidence that organic produce is better for us than non-organic.

Organic IS healthier, say food scientists

Extracts:

"As the debate rages on about whether organically grown food is better for us than the "conventional" produce we have become used to, a new study sides firmly with organic.
Scientists found that some organic food is more healthy after tests on kiwi fruit grown by both methods.

The American researchers discovered that organically grown kiwis had significantly higher levels of vitamin C and polyphenols - compounds associated with health benefits including reducing cholesterol, improving circulation and preventing cancer."

"The researchers compared organic and non-organic kiwis grown next to each other on a farm in Marysville, California, at the same time. They found levels of sugars and acids were almost identical, so the flavour would be similar.

The organic fruit was darker and had thicker skin - likely to have developed as part of its defence against pests in the absence of pesticides.

It had 17 per cent more polyphenols - antioxidants that reduce the production in the body of harmful chemicals called free radicals. The organic produce was also found to have 14 per cent more vitamin C and greater concentrations of several important minerals such as potassium and calcium."

Purple grape juice, cloudy apple juice, cranberry juice, pomegranate juice - good for your heart

Purple grape juice 'best against heart disease'

Extract:

"Drinking purple grape or cloudy apple juice reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's more than orange, grapefruit or pineapple juice, scientists say.

Researchers who have carried out the first comprehensive analysis of the antioxidant content of fruit juices concluded some varieties have substantially greater health benefits than others.

The scientists from the University of Glasgow studied 13 different brands of fruit juices from a local supermarket, measuring the number and overall levels of polyphenols - antioxidants that reduce the production of harmful chemicals called free radicals.

The top five juices for polyphenol content were Welch's Purple Grape. Copella Cloudy Apple, Tropicana Tropical Fruit, Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Drink and Pomegreat Pomegranate Juice Drink.

The drink with the lowest polyphenol content was Tesco's Own Brand White Grape."
