Easter Day: happiness and new life

A very Happy Easter to you! For Christians an end to the Lenten fast and celebration of their risen Lord. For non-believers like me, thoughts of the new life that returns to nature in the springtime. Easter eggs symbolise both the opening of the tomb in which the crucified Jesus was laid, and the new life that emerges from an egg.

If your life is unhappy and a burden to you, and you yearn for a new happier, healthier life - a life renewed - I have a serious, practical suggestion for you, which I urge you not to dismiss. - Cut down on salt and salty food. You will feel so much better - honestly!

Lose weight safely, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Diet drinks do not help you to lose weight. Lose weight by eating less salt! Go on! Try it!

Who drinks diet drinks? - Well, mostly it's fat folk, and they mostly stay fat and get fatter, don't they? - Don't drink diet coke and other diet drinks if you want to lose weight. Drink water instead. - It's cheaper, healthier and safer and it doesn't contain iffy chemicals.

Here's what to do to lose weight fast and really easily, and it's perfectly safe:

Protect your pets from salt and salty food. Salty food causes obesity in dogs, cats, rabbits, etc.

If you have an overweight pet dog, cat or rabbit, it is overweight because of eating food containing added salt, e.g. leftovers from your takeaway meal. This is bad for them. Give them unsalted food instead. They will lose weight, have more energy and live longer.

The same applies to overweight owners of pets...(o:

Budget suggestion: put a swingeing tax on SALT - especially the salt added to tinned and processed foods and ready meals.

This would to some extent result in some people eating less salt and therefore improving their present and future health and happiness. This would save money for the NHS and hopefully would enable some ill people to become well enough to try to get a job and come off benefits.

I realise my suggestion would not be simple to implement and would need time to be spent in ironing out anomalies and other practical problems, including the squawks from the food industry who have many reasons, mostly malign, to want to be able to continue to make and sell salty food, but the time and effort would be well worth it.

When I studied economics years ago I remember we were told that salt is an example of inelastic demand because it is a necessity of life so it will be bought no matter the price. - I hope that rule is not immutable. - The time has come for a sea change in our way of thinking about salt.

My Response to Elsevier's article on "Combating Weight Gain Caused by Antipsychotic Treatments"

Combating weight gain caused by antipsychotic treatments
by Elsevier

Many antipsychotic drugs cause weight gain, often massive weight gain, and Elsevier's article is about research evaluating the effect of another drug, modafinil, on olanzapine-associated weight gain in normal volunteer subjects.

It's alarming how ill-informed 'prescribers' are about the adverse effects of the powerful drugs they inflict on their patients.

All prescription drugs that result in weight gain do so because they cause the person taking them to develop some fluid retention. The extra fluid that accumulates in the patient's body contains sodium ions and the water associated with the sodium, in other words it is salt water. - The person has become slightly sensitive to salt.

The longer the medication is taken and the higher the dose, the greater the salt sensitivity. In a person who is not sensitive to salt, any excess salt intake above the biological minimum of salt that the body requires - about 1.3g per day - the excess salt and the water associated with it is excreted in the urine. In salt-sensitive individuals. some of the excess salt intake is retained in the body, along with the water that always accompanies it, thus causing fluid retention and weight gain (and also, incidentally, damaging the kidneys to some extent).
The way to reduce or to prevent the weight gain associated with antipsychotic drugs (and many other drugs too, including many prescribed steroids and antidepressants) is to avoid eating salt and salty food. - It is as simple - and as difficult! - as that. - So much food that we eat these days has had salt added by manufacturers that it is difficult to achieve a low salt intake; it is, however, well worth the effort.

Lose weight by eating less salt! - Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

However, it does mention that quite a lot of the diseases associated with obesity would be reduced by cutting down on salt.

Eggs have an "insignificant" effect on cholesterol levels, according to scientists, who are now recommending people to eat as many eggs as they like.

You can now go to work on an egg every day, scientists say
from the Daily Telegraph

Extract:

"The research has come as a huge relief to the egg industry, which in recent decades has struggled to persuade people that eggs are a healthy, nutritious food.

Many authorities are still recommending that consumers should not eat more than about three eggs a week – out of date advice that failed to reflect the evidence, the scientists said.

Only last year the advertising watchdog banned an attempt to re-run the classic advert from 1957: Go to Work on an Egg.

The television advert, staring Tony Hancock and penned by the then junior copy writer Fay Weldon, was deemed no longer appropriate on the grounds that eating an egg for breakfast every day is not a "varied diet".

In the mid-1960s, Britons ate an average of about five eggs a week, but health advice helped drive that figure down to less than two in the mid-1990s.

However, in the study published on Tuesday, Juliet Gray and Bruce Griffin of Surrey University said that it was a "myth" that eating lots of eggs increased people's cholesterol level in most instances."

So where are the prominent apologies from the health advisers to the egg farmers?

This is the homepage about British eggs: http://www.britegg.co.uk/

- The health agencies' advice has damaged the egg industry for many years now - and has also damaged ordinary people's health by limiting their intake of eggs, a highly nutritious, versatile and easy to cook food. - Let's keep an eye open for those apologies - though I suspect that they will be as rare as hen's teeth! - I wonder if the egg farmers will be suing the negligent health agencies?

But this is typical. - 'Health experts' give advice prominently and emphatically, yet, as in this case, there wasn't a shred of evidence to support their warnings against more than 2 or 3 eggs a week.

It's the same as their advice that calorie reduction reduces obesity. - IT DOESN'T! - It's sodium reduction that reduces obesity. - And sodium reduction also reduces high cholesterol...(o: - So...

I've been thinking about Steve Wright in the afternoon and the weight he has gained.

The unfortunate fellow, surrounded as he is by publicity, cannot escape the insulting comments of the hate-filled fattists and the misguided advice to 'just eat less and exercise more'. - I do hope he can manage to resist their dangerous bullying. - He does not need to eat less or to exercise more. He needs to cut down significantly on his intake of salt/sodium, because now that he is substantially overweight, he is clearly sensitive to salt. - It is salt sensitivity/fluid retention/sodium retention that causes obesity. - Obesity is not caused by overeating/greed or by inactivity/idleness. - When fat people follow the 'eat less, move more' advice they gain weight, not lose it, because this harmful advice causes an increase is fluid retention.

CALORIE REDUCTION DOES NOT REDUCE OBESITY BECAUSE OBESITY IS NOT CAUSED BY EXCESS CALORIES. - IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MANY 'EXPERTS' TELL YOU THAT IT IS; IT ISN'T. - THE EXPERTS HAVE NEVER BOTHERED TO PUT THEIR ILL-INFORMED ADVICE TO THE TEST. - THERE IS NOT A SCRAP OF CONTROLLED SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THEIR CLAIMS.

Obesity is easily reduced by addressing the fluid retention, i.e. by reducing salt intake.

If you see Steve, tell 'im!

Tomato ketchup has become the latest foodstuff to be banned from canteens at some schools as part of a move towards healthier eating.

Ketchup banned from school canteens due to salt and sugar levels
Article in the Sunday Telegraph

Extract:

"The popular condiment has been taken off the menu at primary schools in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, in a move branded "daft" by some parents.

It comes after Marmite was banned by Ceredigion Council, in Mid Wales, from school breakfast clubs because of "a high level of salt"."

Well that's a good move. Reducing chilldren's salt intake reduces their likelihood of being overweight and having high blood pressure, etc.

How many years of your life have you wasted trying to lose weight by dieting? - Give it up! - Just eat less salt!

Reducing calories/fat/sugar will NOT reduce obesity, because obesity is caused by salt sensitivity leading on to fluid retention/sodium retention/water retention and weight gain. - The safe, sure, fast way to reduce obesity is to avoid salt and salty food, because this reduces the fluid retention.

"We may find in the long run that tinned food is a deadlier weapon than the machine-gun." - George Orwell had something there...

"We may find in the long run that tinned food is a deadlier weapon than the machine-gun." -
George Orwell. - How right he was!

George Orwell also , in his prescient book, 1984, introduced us to Doublethink: "The power to hold two completely contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accept both of them." - I've got news for you: - you almost certainly exhibit this power yourself. - Here's how:-

You KNOW that you know personally people who are not fat - people who are slim, in fact - who definitely eat far more than their body can require, and who take very little exercise and who do not have a particularly high temperature. - And so you KNOW that over-eating and inactivity do not cause obesity - because they do not cause obesity in those people.

And yet simultaneously you nonetheless believe that fat people are fat because they eat too much...

This is Doublethink. - Give it up!

So much tinned food is high in salt/sodium - and it is salt/sodium that makes fat/obese people fatter/more obese, and, more and more, obesity will bring about great suffering and early death to millions upon millions of people.

Don't fall for the lies being promulgated about obesity being caused by greed and laziness; it is caused by fluid retention, caused in turn by salt sensitivity. - Read the facts, not the propaganda...

Researchers at the National Institute for Agricultural Botany in Cambridge have produced a GM wheat that releases fewer calories into the body.

New flour means bread could fight obesity
Article in the Telegraph

Extracts:

"Researchers at the National Institute for Agricultural Botany in Cambridge have produced a genetically modified form of wheat that releases fewer calories into the body compared to other varieties currently available.

Food made from the new crop is also digested slower, making people feel fuller and less likely to eat more food. The scientists hope that these qualities could help make staple foods such as bread, pasta and other flour products healthier."

"Scientists at Birmingham University have also discovered a new method to replace fat in food products by using a protein found in mushrooms. The protein creates an air filled capsule that mimics the texture of fat.

The researchers claim that the protein could be used to replace fat in foods such as salad dressings, mayonnaise, sauces and even ice cream where most of the fat is used to provide a rich texture rather than taste.

Dr Phil Cox, one of the researcher on the team, said: "It is hoped that, by making indulgent foods more healthy, the consumer will be able to continue to enjoy those foods that are currently seen as bad for you, without worrying about the fat content.""

Wouldn't it be great if the researchers gave up this misguided research and did something useful instead?! - They could at least check that their research is founded on reliable evidence. - There is no evidence whatsoever that reducing calorie intake reduces obesity. Nor is there evidence that reducing fat intake reduces obesity. - And they've never even tested out these theories to check if they are right...)o:

The facts are that obesity is caused by salt sensitivity/sodium retention/fluid retention and sometimes, additionally fat retention, i.e. obesity is not caused by overeating or by taking too little exercise. - Obese people can easily lose excess weight, i.e. excess fluid and excess fat, by significantly reducing their intake of salt/sodium and by eating plenty of fruit and unsalted vegetables. - Reducing calories or fat intake has no effect on fluid retention so does not result in loss of excess weight. - Slim people do not have the problem of salt sensitivity; THAT IS WHY THEY ARE SLIM! - It isn't that they don't overeat. - Frequently slim people are the ones you see eating like there's no tomorrow and taking no exercise, but nobody tells them they are greedy or lazy. - It's only the fat people that get gratuitously insulted and accused of greed, yet most fat people are counting calories/dieting MOST OF THE TIME and so they are hungry and UNDER-EATING most of the time.

The fattest people - the morbidly obese - are usually the victims of prescribed drugs that cause sodium and water retention. Doctors prescribe these drugs far too readily/carelessly/recklessly, often in high dose, and without the important warning that while taking them the patient should avoid eating salt of salty food.

Children hate their bodies and yearn to be thin. Anxiety about eating can lead to eating disorders.

Children hate their bodies and yearn to be thin

Extract from the Sunday Telegraph:

"Young children associate being thin with being "popular" and being overweight with being "nasty", attitudes that experts say could lead to eating disorders later in life.

The stresses faced by young children are revealed in the eighth series of the BBC's Child of Our Time, which has followed 25 children since their births in 2000.

The influence of so-called "size zero" culture was revealed when the children, none of whom was overweight, were asked to choose their ideal figure from a series of drawings. All the girls aspired to be thinner and thought that the fuller figures would have fewer friends. One girl said, unprompted, that the largest figure would be "nasty because she is fat". One child, Rhianna, a healthy, normal-sized seven-year-old from Yorkshire, said in the first episode: "I just don't like my body shape. I think I look really fat. I don't like it."

John Oates, a psychologist with the Open University, which has co-produced the series, said: "For the girls, in particular, weight was linked to attractiveness. The media portrayal of attractiveness being about thinness is picked up by children at an early age. Anxiety about eating is definitely a problem that can lead towards eating disorders.""

If everyone was to be told the truth about how people become fat, then there would be very few people with eating disorders. The truth is that obesity has a number of possible causes. Fluid retention/water retention/salt sensitivity is a major and unrecognised route to child obesity because most children these days eat too much salt and salty food. There are other additional possible causes in adults.

Whatever has caused a person to be overweight/fat/obese, they will lose much of that excess weight if they avoid eating salt and salty food.

Drinking accelerates onset of Alzheimer's

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"People who have more than two alcoholic drinks a day develop Alzheimer’s disease five years earlier than those who do not drink, a comprehensive study linking the condition to lifestyle has found.

Those who smoke are affected by the illness two years earlier than non-smokers, while those who smoke and drink are likely to hasten the onset of the disease by seven years.

People who suffer from high cholesterol in middle age are one and a half times more likely to go on to develop Alzheimer’s.

The impact of lifestyle on the development and the advance of the disease, which affects more than 400,000 people in Britain, was disclosed in two separate studies presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology’s Anniversary in Chicago."
