The new position could have a huge impact on medicine and on the biotechnology industry. The new position was declared in a friend-of-the-court brief filed by the Department of Justice in a case involving two human genes linked to breast and ovarian cancer. “We acknowledge that this conclusion is contrary to the longstanding practice of the Patent and Trademark Office, as well as the practice of the National Institutes of Health and other government agencies that have in the past sought and obtained patents for isolated genomic DNA,” the brief said.

Comment from Dr Rath Foundation: The U.S. federal government should be applauded for taking this important position against the multi-trillion dollar “business with disease.” The human genome − the blueprint of life and the biological basis of our existence − belongs to all mankind. Efforts to own this genetic code with the goal to re-build, sell and manipulate the human body or parts of it for corporate gain, should therefore be prohibited.

'Fat genes' a major cause of weight problem. - This is the latest drivel purporting to be useful research about obesity...
'Fat genes' a major cause of weight problems
This article is in the Telegraph.
It's so stupid. - How could genetic inheritance change so markedly in a period of a decade or two? - This is nonsense. - Obesity is caused by fluid retention, and fluid retention is related to salt sensitivity in groups vulnerable to salt. One of the groups vulnerable to salt is small children. (Note: obesity is caused by fluid retention - NOT by overeating. - You know loads of people who eat vast amounts of food and take no exercise and are as slim as reeds. - Clearly overeating does not cause obesity.) - Fluid retention (and therefore weight) is reduced when salt intake is reduced.
(I note the 'research' was funded by Cancer Research UK and others and this reinforces my low opinion of Cancer Research UK...)o: - They should be telling people the truth about salt and how salt reduction is the safest and most reliable way to reduce your risk of developing cancer.)
When children become fat it is essentially because they are eating salty food. Children are especially vulnerable to salt because of their small size and small blood volume, and because their blood vessels are weaker than those of adults. Salt, and the water it attracts to it, can more easily distend weak blood vessels than fully mature ones. The resulting increase in blood volume and other fluid retention results in weight gain, as well as higher blood pressure and many other undesirable consequences. The smaller the child, the less salt they should have - and a baby, of course, should have no salt at all.
Because children have much smaller bodies than adults it would be best if they had no more than half as much salt as adults. Most children, however, have much more than this because they eat so many snacks and instant foods.
There are high amounts of salt in packet soups, instant noodles, crisps, ketchup and sauces, sausages, burgers and savoury snacks. Fat children will lose weight fast if they eat less salt. And even faster still if they eat plenty of fresh fruit and unsalted vegetables, because these are rich in potassium, which helps to displace sodium from the body.

Stem cells have been created from ordinary skin cells...
Stem cell breakthrough paves way for tailor-made new treatments - Guardian
Extract:
"Stem cells capable of making any tissue in the body have been created from ordinary skin cells, a world first that paves the way for revolutionary new treatments tailored to individual patients.
The pioneering research overcomes one of the most pressing ethical issues faced by stem cell scientists today - that the most promising variety of stem cells known can be obtained only from embryos, which are cannibalised when the cells are collected.
Researchers claim the new technique can produce stem cells without harming embryos. In a series of papers published today, they describe experiments in which skin cells were plucked from adult mice and "reprogrammed", turning them into cells that are indistinguishable from embryonic stem cells, the only kind thought to be able to grow into all of the body's tissue types.
The breakthrough is expected to overcome a major hurdle that has severely hampered progress in stem cell research. For any stem cell treatment to be useful, it has to work without causing an immune reaction in patients. This means scientists must either create enormous stockpiles of different stem cells, which can then be matched to patients, much as organs are before transplant operations. Or, scientists have to perfect a technique called therapeutic cloning, in which a cell taken from a patient is cloned to produce stem cells that are an exact genetic match. Neither is simple.
The research points to a new way around the problem, suggesting it may be possible to take any cell from a patient and convert into an embryonic stem cell. This could then be used to grow batches of other tissues for future operations, such as neurons and heart cells.
Two teams, one lead by Shinya Yamanaka at Kyoto University and the other by Rudolf Jaenisch at the Whitehead Institute at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, announced details of their research in the journal Nature today.
Both groups took skin cells from adult mice and injected them with a harmless virus that was genetically modified to carry four carefully selected genes, known as Oct4, Sox2, c-Myc and Klf4. Together the genes rewound the clock on the adult cells, returning them to a youthful state in which they could then grow into any other cell type."

Discovery of genes said to be linked to seven common ailments
Genes behind serious illnesses discovered - Telegraph
Extract:
"A dramatic genetic breakthrough has paved the way for potential new treatments of seven common diseases that could help more than 20 million people.
The largest ever study of its kind has found 10 new genes linked to seven of the most common ailments: heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, bipolar disorder and Crohn’s disease.
Some 200 British scientists from 50 research groups collaborated to discover the genes after screening DNA from 17,000 people.
In two years, the £9 million investigation analysed 10 billion pieces of genetic information. "
The article includes an illustration which bears the information "The study has identified the genes that cause seven of the most common ailments." - But that, of course, is sheer nonsense as far as heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes are concerned. - The usual trigger for these illnesses is sodium and water retention (or salt sensitivity) in vulnerable groups of people. - See

Discovery of breast cancer genes opens door to new research.
Discovery of breast cancer genes will identify sufferers - Independent
Extract:
"Some scientists believe that the latest studies, published online in the journals Nature and Nature Genetics, are among the most important in the field of breast cancer since the first susceptibility genes for inherited forms of the disease were identified in the mid-1990s.
"This set of incredible scientific studies points to the future understanding of the genetics of cancer," said Professor Karol Sikora, a leading cancer specialist, who was not directly involved with the latest work.
"In theory, it allows you to look at thousands of people to study their genes and to find associations that we just didn't see before," Professor Sikora said.
Several teams of scientists took part in the latest studies, with the biggest led by Douglas Easton, a professor of cancer epidemiology at Cambridge University, who studied the DNA of nearly 50,000 women, half of whom had breast cancer.
The scientists used "DNA chips" to screen each person's genome for genetic variations that were found to be strongly linked with breast cancer. Small variations in four genes emerged as the most likely associations.
"We're very excited by these results because the regions we identified don't contain previously known inherited cancer genes," Professor Easton said.
"This opens the door to new research directions. Only very recent advances in technology have allowed us to carry out such a large comparison study," he said.
Already, the scientists are applying the same approach to other cancers, such as prostate, lung and bowel cancers, in the hope of identifying genetic changes that can trigger a higher risk of developing any of the diseases.
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in British women with some 44,000 new cases diagnosed each year.
Inherited forms of breast cancer that are known to run in families account for between 5 and 10 per cent of cases. These genes - called BRCA1 and BRCA2 - were the first to be identified in the mid-1990s."
A safe, easy way to lower your risk of developing cancer is to stop eating salt and salty food and to eat plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables. This is because obesity is implicated in most cancers and obesity is principally caused by sensitivity to salt/sodium, resulting in sodium and water retention in the bloodstream. Fruit and fresh vegetables help because these foods are rich in potassium, and potassium displaces some of the sodium and its accompanying water from the bloodstream.

Scientists claim that they have discovered the clearest link yet between genes and obesity. - I reckon we're in red herring territory here, don't you?
Obese are born to put on weight, geneticists claim - Independent
Extract:
"The researchers have identified a type of genetic variation that gives a child a 70 per cent higher risk of developing obesity compared to a child who has not inherited the genetic variant.
Although the scientists cannot explain how the gene involved makes obesity more likely, they believe the discovery will start a race to find the fundamental reasons why some people are born with a predisposition to being fat.
Professor Andrew Hattersley from the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter said: "As a nation, we are eating more and doing less exercise and so the average weight is increasing but, within the population, some people seem to put on more weight than others.""
That last paragraph of the extract should make the smell of red herring very pronounced because, you see, although as a nation we are doing less exercise, we are NOT eating more! - See actual evidence - Obesity is not caused by overeating; it is caused by fluid retention.
It is next door to impossible to lose weight safely by reducing calorie intake or doing more exercise, but it is incredibly easy for an obese person to lose weight fast by stopping eating salt or salty food and making sure they eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit. - Even if they eat big meals, provided the meals are low in salt/sodium, they will lose weight in the easiest, fastest, safest way possible.
If you, the reader of this blog, are obese and you have tried countless times to lose weight by dieting and never succeeded, then try my suggestion. - Go on! - Try it for a few weeks. - Most obese people who seriously, genuinely make a real effort to cut out salt and salty food lose about 14 pounds weight in the first month. - You could be one of them. - But it is very important NOT to diet or go hungry. - Just forget about calories. - They are little red herrings...(o:

Hopes raised yet again about cancer treatments. - This time it involves genes and screening.
Gene find raises hope for gentler, highly effective cancer treatments - Guardian
Extract:
"A cluster of genes which can make cancer cells thousands of times more sensitive to chemotherapy have been discovered by scientists, an advance that could pave the way for highly effective, pain free cancer treatment.
Researchers in the US used a new screening technique to scan more than 20,000 genes in lung-cancer cells which led them to uncover those cells which responded to a chemotherapy drug.
They found 87 genes that made tumours more vulnerable to the drug, paclitaxel, when their activity was reduced or blocked. Blocking the action of some of them made lung cancer cells 10,000 times more sensitive to paclitaxel.
The discovery means it could be possible to personalise cancer treatments so that the cancerous tissue is targeted more efficiently while healthy cells are left unharmed, thus making treatment far less debilitating. It raises the possibility of lowering chemotherapy doses and reducing the side effects of drugs, without compromising their effectiveness."
Best not to hold your breath! - How often do we see claims of breakthroughs and great hopes? - If headlines cured cancer and 'news' were therapeutic there'd certainly be no cancer any more!
See this further extract:
""There's nothing here immediately useful to those individuals with cancer. We're still at the beginning, but this sort of approach is very effective. It shortens the discovery process, which makes the development process so much quicker."
Further research on animals is needed; the first clinical trials on cancer patients can only begin in no fewer than three to five years. The study looked at isolated human cells in the laboratory, and more research will be needed to determine whether blocking the genes in animals has the same effect. In the long term, this discovery could play a part in the way new cancer drugs are designed."
Here are some measures you can take that are very practical, very effective, absolutely immediate, cost-free and drug-free, that will greatly reduce your risk of developing cancer:
1. - The MOST IMPORTANT is to stop eating salt and salty food. - See sodium foods
http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/socio.html http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/conditions.html
This one measure will significantly reduce the risk/severity of all the usual deadly diseases, not just cancer....heart disease, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc and most of the disabling and aging conditions....obesity, Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, insomnia, headaches, migraines, pains of many kinds...
2. - If you are wanting to lose weight YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST GIVE UP DIETING. - IT IS VERY HARMFUL AND COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY.
3. - Eat plenty of proper food - not diet rubbish - including plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables.
4. - Give up smoking. (I do mean give up; I don't mean cut down.)
5. - Avoid prescribed medications as far as you possibly can. - These drugs very frequently have adverse side-effects which are very frequently extremely harmful.
6. - Cut down on alcohol if you drink a lot.
7. - Make sure you are getting enough calcium in what you eat. If you don't get enough, try having some low fat yoghurt in addition to what you usually eat.
8. - Make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D in what you eat. - You may be short of Vitamin D because you have cut down on milk and other dairy products in the mistaken idea that these are fattening. They do not cause weight gain, unless salt has been added to them, so do not eat salted butter. Milk is a good source of both calcium and Vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed for the absorption of calcium and the regulation of calcium levels in the blood. - Shortage of Vitamin D is quite common, especially in elderly people.
