The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority will publish on Monday the conclusions of its consultation on how to reduce the number of multiple pregnancies, which pose an increased risk to the mother and babies.

The HFEA is understood to be backing away from the introduction of immediate guidelines on which women should have only one embryo implanted at a time and instead favours plans to allow clinics to set out their own measures to reduce multiple pregnancies."

If a woman is infertile because of being overweight/obese she can easily and safely reduce her excess weight by avoiding eating salt and salty food, so may like to try this before embarking on possibly risky interventions.

"Britain's leading foetal medicine expert has condemned the IVF industry, saying some private clinics are exploiting women desperate to get pregnant by offering them unproven and expensive treatments.

Speaking publicly for the first time, Professor Charles Rodeck, founder and head of the unit for foetal medicine at University College Hospital London, has expressed particular concern over some of the drugs and tests being offered to infertile couples.

'The commercial world of IVF provision is a very competitive one, so some clinics try to keep a step ahead by offering more interventions than their competitors, even if they know those procedures might not work,' he said.

Rodeck transformed the use of foetal medicine in Britain by initiating the use of ultrasound for foetal therapy and diagnosis of malformations in the late Seventies. He went on to set up the first foetal medicine unit in the early Eighties, as well as setting up clinics specialising in the care of young women.

'Even though I have no evidence that the mothers or babies are being harmed by the extra hormones and steroids they are increasingly being given by these clinics, you can't be sure what happens to a baby when you put unnecessary and unproven medicines into its mother's body,' he said.

His work has left him open to attacks from the anti-abortion lobby but he is defiant. 'The truth is that not all human life is totally sacrosanct,' he said. 'Nature has a mechanism called "miscarriage" which eliminates many of its early errors but it is not always totally efficient and so some of these errors survive. What we are trying to do simply use technology to assist Nature.'

Rodeck also criticised some private clinics for giving poor information to couples. 'Offering these interventions becomes exploitation when clinics do not spell out the pros, cons and limitations of these interventions because couples so desperately want to get pregnant, that they will pay for virtually any treatment if they think it will increase their chances,' he said.

There are 85 licensed fertility clinics in the UK, in an industry worth up to £500m a year. According to latest figures from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, in 2004 more than 30,000 patients underwent more than 40,000 treatment cycles, each costing up to £8,000.

Rodeck says he agrees with the concerns voiced earlier this year by Lord Winston, professor of fertility studies at Imperial College London, that the IVF industry has been corrupted by money. He pointed to a growing range of expensive clinical practices offered to couples at private clinics, despite there being very limited evidence that such interventions work."

It's good to see a doctor warning that prescribed drugs can do harm.

If a woman is subfertile because she is overweight/obese, avoiding salt and salty food would help because this would reduce the fluid retention that is the cause of obesity.

In a public consultation paper launched on Wednesday, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority will raise the issue of “single embryo transfer” amid fears that multiple births are putting the lives of mothers and babies at risk.

Strict rules governing IVF treatment currently mean that women under 40 in Britain can have two embryos implanted while those over 40 are allowed three.

The more embryos that are transferred, the greater the chance of twins or triplets, increasing the risk of premature births, cerebral palsy, low birth weight and other complications. "

Most women can improve their fertility by reducing their salt intake. - This is because reducing salt intake reduces any fluid retention, which is the cause of obesity, and there is a positive correlation between obesity and infertility.

"Women who donate their eggs for research are at risk from life-threatening side effects, scientists warn in a new study.

They say that the powerful drugs given to the volunteers to help increase the number of eggs they produce can cause paralysis, limb amputation and even death.

The warning comes days before the results of a review into a controversial decision to allow doctors to harvest eggs from healthy volunteers for research purposes.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) is expected to endorse its policy, which provoked an outcry when it was announced last year. But the safety of egg donation is questioned by Italian experts.

In their study, 34 women suffered severe reactions to the hormone-stimulating drugs used. The researchers, at the University of Padua, found that most of those affected had previously enjoyed good health. An analysis of doctors' reports since the early 1990s revealed that 60 per cent of the accidents involved blood clots in the head and neck.

The study, in the journal Thrombosis and Thrombolysis, concludes that the number of side effects would rise as the number of assisted reproduction techniques increased and that doctors using the drugs need a better understanding of the potential risks."


Obesity is one factor that reduces fertility, and obesity is caused/initiated by fluid retention and salt sensitivity. A completely safe and very healthy way for women to increase their fertility, therefore, is to reduce their intake of salt/sodium.

Remember: Obesity is not caused by eating too much. - Since it is usually caused/initiated by salt sensitivity and fluid retention, and is best reduced by abandoning the calorie myth and concentrating on cutting down on salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
