Freudian Slip by the Department of Health
Freud is a PR guy whose agency (Freud Communications) works for clients that include Pepsi, KFC, Walkers Crisps and the premium drinks company, Diageo. They are companies whose products could never be accused of being remotely good for public health. And remember Change4Life? - Freud handled that anti-obesity campaign, notable for its spectacular lack of success in reducing the nation's growing obesity problem. Well if Freud and his company have as little success at improving public health as they have so far demonstrated, at least their other clients will feel the benefit in their swelling profits. - Anyone noticed the old enemy, Conflicts of Interest, rearing its ugly head again?

Nutrition Science or Nutrition Science Betrayed?
The War for Nutrition Science Integrity
"The American Society for Nutrition (ASN), the largest society for nutrition researchers in the US, openly receives support from pharmaceutical companies like Abbott Nutrition and Martek Biosciences, genetic engineering and pesticide giant Monsanto, food processor ConAgra, and junk food suppliers and producers Coca-Cola, Mars, Kraft, McDonald’s, General Mills, and Kellogg’s, not to mention the Sugar Association, Inc. (among many others). Think about that: an organization claiming “excellence in nutrition research and practice” receives major funding from companies making drugs, pesticides, and some of the most health-damaging foods on the planet."
We must all stand up and be counted in the battle against pharmaceutical junk, food junk and manipulated junk science. Good nutrition should be our civilisation’s foundation and a legacy to be bequeathed to future generations. Our health is being sold by scoundrels and bought by arch-criminals.

Incredibly irresponsible suggestion to provide statin medication to accompany meals in fast food outlets
Anyone who wants to lower their cholesterol levels can do so without drugs. Simply cutting down on salt/sodium and salty food lowers cholesterol and also, much more importantly, lowers high blood pressure, lowers the risk of heart disease, heart attack, dementia, type 2 diabetes and many other degenerative illnesses, and reduces overweight by reducing fluid retention. And there are no adverse side-effects to cutting down on salt.

Excellent article by Alex Renton about toxic trans fats and the harmful products that contain them
I urge you to read the article. I'm sure you will find it eye-opening. And then ponder why on earth Andrew Lansley as Health Secretary is against banning trans fats from food! - He should be relieved of his post; he is a laughing stock among people interested in promoting health. He is bringing the government into disrepute. What on earth were they thinking of to appoint him to such a powerful position in which he can do such harm? Were they just 'aving a larf? From his reaction to the Whitewash Report about the UK's Swine Flu Vaccine debâcle, he clearly favours Big Pharma as well as Food Inc...)o: - Please, Mr Prime Minister, can we have a Health Secretary with a bit of interest in keeping citizens healthy, rather than boosting the profits of big business?

It's not the calories in junk food that make you gain weight; it's the SALT.
Why do you think people find that diets don't work? - It's because obesity is caused by fluid retention/salt sensitivity, not by eating too many calories.
We all know people who eat like trenchermen but never get fat. - They are the lucky people who are not sensitive to salt. For them, eating salt doesn't lead to fluid retention because their strong veins can withstand the input of salt/sodium when they eat more of it than their body needs. - Their kidneys do not have a problem dealing with the salt/sodium and they excrete any excess salt/sodium in their urine, along with the water that salt always attracts to itself.
When excess fluid (i.e. excess salt and water) is held in the veins, the extra blood volume obviously adds to a person's weight: water weighs heavily in fact. - So if you are overweight and reduce your salt intake you will shed some of the excess fluid held in your body and will therefore lose weight - easily, safely and fast.
And do not despise the weight lost and think well, it's only water. - Water is what you NEED to lose in order to lose weight safely. - You don't want to lose lean muscle/firm flesh. You don't want your skin and bones to become thinner and more fragile. - You don't want to lose your hair.
Believe me: you want to lose excess fluid. - There is a great bonus to losing excess fluid. - If you have fat retention as well as fluid retention, then reducing salt intake also reduces fat retention.
There are no calories in salt - but if you cut down on salt you will easily lose weight. If you cut down on calories you will not lose weight.

Should Heinz/Cow & Gate be prosecuted for not complying with food labelling legal requirement re Baby Balance biscuits, which contained trans fats?
Sustain, a small charity that campaigns for healthier children’s food, has found that many baby foods promoted as 'healthy' are not, in fact, healthy for babies and young children. Some are, in effect, junk food.
Among the criticised products are Toddler’s Own mini cheese biscuits and Farley's Rusks.
I hope that there will be criminal prosecutions in connection with the false claims and misleading labelling, but I doubt that will happen because the food industry has many powerful friends and defenders, whereas mere consumers and their children have little influence.
Remember, babies and young children need to be protected from salt/sodium and salty foods. Child obesity is caused by sodium intake that is too high. It is not just salt that contains sodium. The raising agent in biscuits often contains sodium bicarbonate.
High sodium intake is a major contributory factor in many chronic health problems, as well as obesity.

Celebrities should not endorse junk food.
I certainly agree with the sentiments of the article and I welcome the actress Emma Thompson's assurance that she would not endorse junk food.
I've often wondered how much harm Gary Lineker has indirectly caused to how many hundreds of thousands of children by his participation in the highly popular adverts for Walker's crisps. - The salt those crisps contain can be extremely injurious to children.
Shame on the celebrities who harm children and others in order to swell their bank balances!

Baroness Peta Buscombe, chief executive of the Advertising Association, is giving junk advice about junk food...
article in the Sunday Telegraph:
"A multi-million pound campaign against Britain's obesity epidemic will tomorrow be launched by the Government together with the food industry.
If only! - What a waste of money! - It seems to be the same misinformation that will continue to be spread...)o: - However many times people say that sugar-free and low-fat alternatives will reduce obesity it still isn't true! And it also isn't true that exercise helps overweight people to lose weight. - It doesn't. - Calories/fat/inactivity are not the cause/s of excess weight. - Sodium retention/fluid retention/water retention/salt sensitivity cause weight gain, overweight and obesity. - To lose excess weight, people need to be told the truth, not misinformed. - Reducing calories/fat is unnecessary and ineffective in losing excess weight. But it is easy to lose excess weight by cutting down on salt and salty food...
Extract from the Sunday Telegraph article:
"Baroness Peta Buscombe, chief executive of the Advertising Association, which will run the Business for Life strategy, said businesses were keen to take "corporate responsibility" even if some of their products were unhealthy.
She said: "The labelling on a fizzy drink could say 'Try the sugar free next time', if it's a packet of bacon it might say 'I'm a thriller in the griller', or a box of eggs might say 'Please don't fry me'. This is about giving people a nudge in the right direction, not about nannying them."
Other companies might use their budgets to promote cooking lessons or sports events, she said.
The Conservative peer said companies were keen to demonstrate that advertising could be used for a good purpose, but said it would be down to individual companies about how far they went in sending messages which could hit their profits.
"Many of these companies will have sugar-free and low-fat alternatives that they can promote but it is down to companies to decide their individual messages, as long as they are agreed by the Department of Health. It can't only be about putting positive messages on healthy foods," she said.
Government figures show obesity is responsible for 9,000 premature deaths a year in England, reducing life expectancy by an average of nine years.
The NHS cost of treating illnesses related to obesity is estimated at £4.2 billion, a figure predicted to double by 2050."

Pet owners are increasingly feeding their animals a dangerously unhealthy diet of junk food, causing them to become obese.
Article in the Sunday Telegraph
Extract:
"Researchers for The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals found that in the past year there has been a 10 per cent increase in the number of overweight animals.
Around 500,000 pets are affected, ranging from cats and dogs to rabbits, rats and even budgerigars.
They are suffering symptoms identified with obesity in humans, such as low energy levels, breathing problems, arthritis, asthma, diabetes, liver and heart disease and poor fertility."
It's the high levels of salt in junk food that cause the pets to become obese because of fluid retention. Pets need to be fed food which contains little or no added salt/sodium.

The government has abandoned plans to impose a pre-9pm ban on junk food TV advertising
Extract from the Guardian:
"In a major victory for the advertising industry and commercial broadcasters, it is thought that the Department of Health has lost the battle to introduce a pre-watershed ban following a series of discussions with other government departments, notably the culture minister, James Purnell, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.
Many industry observers had expected that the new obesity strategy, to be launched tomorrow by the health secretary, Alan Johnson, and the public health minister, Dawn Primarolo, would drastically extend the TV restrictions Ofcom brought in last year.
Ofcom has stated that such a ban would have a "disproportionate" effect on the industry, costing as much as £211m in TV ad revenue.
But campaign groups are now convinced that they have lost the battle on the pre-watershed ban.
"It sounds as if the advertising and food industries owe the Department for Culture, Media and Sport a large pat on the back," said Richard Watts, the coordinator of the Children's Food Campaign.
"Our understanding is that the Department of Health supported some very tough restrictions on junk food advertising and marketing, but lost the Whitehall battle to keep them in the obesity strategy.""

Food companies including Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Mars and Burger King have signed a European Union pledge to stop marketing junk food to children under 12.
Extract from the Guardian:
"An alliance of food companies including Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Mars and Burger King have signed a European Union pledge to stop marketing junk food to children under 12 years old.
The group of 11 companies, which represent more than 50% of the food and beverage advertising spend in the EU, have agreed to stop running junk food ads on TV, in print and on the internet to under-12s by the end of 2008.
The alliance, which also includes PepsiCo, Kraft, Unilever, Danone and Ferrero, have agreed not to market products in primary schools, except where "specifically requested by or agreed with the school administration for educational purposes".
A number of the companies, such as Coca-Cola, Kraft and Mars, have previously agreed a US responsible marketing code around advertising to children.
The difference with this new programme, called the EU Pledge, is that the 11 companies have agreed to have independently verified monitoring of their reduction in marketing, from January 2009."

TV loophole lets children watch junk food ads. - IT'S THE HIGH SALT JUNK FOOD - LIKE CHEESTRINGS AND CRISPS - THAT DOES GREATEST HARM TO CHILDREN...
Extract from the Telegraph:
"Millions of children are being exposed to junk food advertisements on television despite regulations to stamp them out, says a new report.
Mars bars, Cheestrings snacks, McDonald's restaurants, Pringles crisps and a host of other junk food brands are regularly being advertised during programmes popular with young children, says research by the consumer group Which?.
Complicated rules introduced by the broadcasting regulator Ofcom have failed to prevent children aged nine and under from being exposed to a regular stream of crisp, chocolate and fast food commercials, its report says.
The rules, which came into force in April, ban any product high in sugar, saturated fat or salt being advertised during a programme watched predominantly by children. However, the rules are based on the proportion of children watching a programme rather than the actual number.
Which? analysed all programmes broadcast during two weeks in September and found that only two of the top 10 most popular shows watched by the under-10s, in terms of numbers, were subject to the restrictions.
The three most popular programmes were all family orientated - Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, X-Factor and You've Been Framed - watched by 1.2 million under-10s.

Junk Food Makers are targeting children on the internet
Extract:
"Food manufacturers were criticised yesterday for targeting their advertising at children on the internet and social networking websites.
Several major food companies have begun using the sites to promote their products following a ban on junk food advertising on television. In April, Ofcom, which regulates broadcasters, outlawed all adverts to children under nine years old that promoted sugary, salty or fatty foods. At the end of the year the ban extends to 15-year-olds.
However, Ofcom has no remit to regulate the internet, and adverts on websites are self-regulated by the advertising industry. The ban on junk food advertising also does not cover the cinema.
Campaigners argue that fast food chains and sweet companies are adopting new tactics to get around the TV ban.
Skittles, which are made by the confectionery giant Mars, have a profile on the popular social networking site Bebo. The page has already been viewed more than 50,000 times and attracted more than 3,500 "friends".
Meanwhile McDonald's is also targeting children on the internet. It features a Kids Zone on its website, which lets children play games that feature the company's clown mascot, Ronald McDonald.
In cinemas, the sugary cereal Coco Pops has placed adverts before the new Harry Potter film. Kellogg's, which makes Coco Pops, admits the advert would not be allowed during a children's programme on television.
Campaigners argue that all these tactics break the spirit, if not the letter, of the new regulations. Richard Watts, who heads the Sustain campaign, which has fought against junk food advertising, said: "I don't think it is a legitimate tactic to shift their advertising in this way. If Ofcom thinks that under 16-year-olds should be protected, that is a principle that should be carried through to other media. The country has to decide - given the rates of childhood obesity - whether we make sure all marketing is regulated or whether we let the problem continue.""

Junk food tax 'could save thousands of lives', it is claimed
Extract:
"Dr Mike Rayner, from the Department of Public Health at Oxford University, evaluated different approaches that ranged from taxing food high in saturated fat and taxing all food that is high in salt, fat, and sugar. He found that taxing food with a lot of saturated fat increased death rates because it did not take the salt content into account."
And there you have it! - It's salt intake that's the problem (for people vulnerable to salt). - Fat intake is not in itself the problem. - When people are sensitive to salt (that's everyone who is overweight or obese) then eating salt not only causes water retention (and therefore above normal weight) but also can cause FAT RETENTION. - Fat retention can be reduced or eliminated by increasing calcium intake. - See BBC webpage about calcium from The Truth About Food series of programmes

Alarming levels of malnutrition have been recorded in Britain.
Extract:
"3.6 million people in Britain suffer from malnutrition. Hospitals see 44% rise in cases as cost to the NHS hits £7.3bn ."
"Alarming levels of malnutrition have been recorded in Britain, The Independent on Sunday has learned, prompting further medical concern at the effects of the nation's addiction to salty, fatty, junk food.
Despite high-profile campaigns by the Government and celebrity chefs to improve eating habits, new figures reveal that there has been a 44 per cent increase in hospital cases of malnutrition over the past five years.
Amid estimates that up to 3.6 million people are suffering from malnutrition, including conditions found in sub-Saharan Africa, MPs and doctors last night called for action to tackle poor diets, and for all patients to be screened for malnutrition. They called for the Government's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) guidelines to be made compulsory.
In 2002, 2,729 people in English hospitals were diagnosed with malnutrition. Last year, the number had risen to 3,931.
The British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition estimates malnutrition costs the NHS more than £7.3bn a year, double the annual obesity bill. Doctors estimate that up to 6 per cent of the population could be suffering from malnutrition and serious vitamin and mineral deficiencies caused by poor diet. Most do not have their conditions identified.
Experts said a reliance on pre-prepared food and failure to eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables is depleting levels of essential micro-nutrients. The deficiencies are found in teenagers, the elderly, adults and babies as young as 18 months. They warn the balance of nutrients is also disturbed by binge drinking, excess sugar and drug use."
Obviously a great deal of lasting harm has been done by years of junk food lunches provided as school meals for many years and only in recent years, and patchily, beginning to be improved. There is also the continuing harm done by poor hospital food provision (and that of other institutions) and failure to ensure that patients can actually eat the food provided, for example when they are too ill or frail or disabled actually to open a packet of sandwiches and no member of staff opens it for them - just removes it and throws it away uneaten...)o:
Overwhelmingly, great and lasting harm is done by dieting, yet the government's agencies and obesity 'experts' continue to advise obese people to diet/eat less, even though this is well known to be ineffective in reducing obesity. - Obese people should be told the truth: that to lose excess weight they should not eat less food, only less salt.
And the MASSIVE harm done by the over-prescribing of drugs by negligent doctors may well be the major cause of malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency in older adults.

Further restrictions on junk food advertising
Extract:
"Restrictions on food and drink advertising to under-16-year-olds are to be widened to cover non-broadcast media, the Committee for Advertising Practice has confirmed.
Cap's new rules cover all food and drink products except fresh fruit and vegetables and extend advertising restrictions to media such as magazines, paid-for ad space on the internet, newspapers and billboards and cinema, as revealed by MediaGuardian.co.uk in February.
The restrictions, due to come into force from July 1, follow Ofcom's obesity reduction strategy, which applies only to TV ads.
Ofcom banned the advertising of junk food to children, introducing restrictions based on a nutrient profiling model developed by the Food Standards Agency to identify products high in fat, salt and sugar."
The best way to reduce child obesity is to admit that obesity is not caused by overeating, but by fluid retention in the vulnerable groups of people that are sensitive to salt/sodium. - Children are one of the vulnerable groups and to prevent them from becoming obese they should be protected from eating a lot of salt or salty food. Children who are already obese can lose weight easily if they eat less salty food. The less salt they eat, the more weight they will lose. - It is not necessary to cut down on calories.
