Want help for insomnia but don't want to use sleeping pills?

Want help for insomnia but don't want to use sleeping pills? - Maybe you've seen those recent news items about the dangers of taking sleeping tablets (risk of earlier death, increased risk of developing cancer, risk of becoming habituated or addicted, risk of falls, memory loss, etc.) Well one of the ways to help with poor sleep is to take melatonin. It is safer than hypnotics, antidepressants and painkillers. - Melatonin is a natural human hormone and you do not require a doctor's prescription to obtain it. I suggest that if you decide to try melatonin you buy the 3mg capsules and take one each day about half an hour before your bedtime.

NHS is prescribing more sleeping pills

The Telegraph reports that GPs issued more than a million prescriptions for sleeping pills last year, and that "Zopiclone, also known as Zimovane and Imovane, which was prescribed to 4.7m people, was the most popular sleeping tablet."

The brain is not infinitely elastic and it is your most precious possession. I do not consider that drugging more and more people with brain-altering drugs is a good idea, especially as some sleeping pills are addictive. Drug-induced sleep is not refreshing, life-enhancing sleep like natural sleep is. Sleeping pills benefit the manufacturers, not the patients.

There are safe, drug-free ways to improve sleep, the simplest and most effective being to cut down on salt and salty food and to optimise nutrition. But remember, if worry is the trouble, pills are not the answer. - Pills will render your brain less able to deal with your problems.

Treat ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) more seriously, doctors have been advised

Treat ME more seriously, doctors ordered - Telegraph

Extract:

"ME, or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, affects 193,000 people in Britain. Symptoms can include debilitating fatigue, headaches, sleep problems and muscle pain.

Doctors had argued over whether the condition existed. Some experts suggested it was just "yuppie flu".

Sir Liam Donaldson, the Government's chief medical officer, sought to end the controversy in 2002 when he said it was a genuine and disabling condition.

The disease is also listed as a neurological disorder by the World Health Organisation.

The guidance from Nice recommends that doctors develop a management plan for each patient.

Doctors should also offer advice on activity, rest periods, sleep patterns, diet, equipment to help maintain independence such as the blue badge for disabled drivers, and advice on fitness to work or study."

It is very helpful for people with ME to cut down on their intake of salt and salty food. They will then have much more energy.
