Is there a crisis in Britain's maternity care?

The Big Question: Why is there a crisis in maternity care, and should parents be worried? - Independent

Extract:

"The Royal College of Midwives says the shortage of staff and facilities on labour wards has reached "crisis" point. The Royal College of Obstetricians has warned of a lack of skilled obstetricians and a looming recruitment crisis as the number of UK medical graduates choosing obstetrics has halved in a decade. On Wednesday, MPs demanded urgent action to address the problem in a Commons debate. A BBC Panorama programme broadcast this week, filmed undercover in two hospitals in north London and Manchester, claimed wards were buckling under the midwife shortage."

Epilepsy drug, valproate, may lower children's IQ

Epilepsy drug may lower children's IQ, study shows - Guardian

Extract:

"Women who took an epilepsy drug during their pregnancy are at greater risk of having children with lower IQ, according to a study. Taking the drug valproate - which is already at the centre of a British court action after claims that it has damaged children - seems to double the chance that the woman's child will be born with mental retardation.

Around 140 British families claim their children are suffering from foetal anti-convulsant syndrome because their mothers took valproate during pregnancy. The syndrome encompasses a range of neural, behavioural and physical disorders such as cleft palate and spina bifida, learning difficulties, behavioural problems and abnormalities in movement, speech, vision and hearing. Many mothers were prescribed the brand Epilim, made by Sanofi-Synthelabo, though the drug is also available in generic forms. So far, Sanofi is the only company involved in the court action, with a trial date set for October 2008.

In the research, Kimford Meador, of the University of Florida in Gainesville, looked at IQ results of 187 children born to mothers who had taken the epilepsy drugs carbamazepine, lamotrigine, phenytoin, or valproate during pregnancy. The results, presented yesterday at the American Academy of Neurology's annual meeting in Boston, showed 24% of the children of mothers who took valproate had an IQ low enough to be defined as mentally retarded, compared to 12% for carbamazepine, 9% for lamotrigine, and 12% for phenytoin.

Children whose mothers took carbamazepine scored an average of 93 points on the IQ tests, those on phenytoin 93, lamotrigine 96, and 84 for valproate. "Our findings are consistent with other studies, which have shown valproate poses an increased risk for foetal death and birth defects," said Dr Meador."

Doctors are supposed to avoid prescribing drugs to pregnant women unless the drugs are absolutely necessary because so many drugs are particularly dangerous to unborn babies. I know personally, however, that valproate is a dangerous drug and that it is not only unborn babies that are affected. - I used to know a woman whose only child, a beloved daughter, died because an obstinate doctor had insisted to her mother that the drug was safe and that the little girl was just attention-seeking and not really ill...)o: - And I, in my innocence years ago, took Epilim for some weeks. I was told that it would lessen the chronic toothache I suffered because of the sustained gross negligence of senior dental staff at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. - It did not lessen the pain at all; what it did do was cause some of my hair to fall out. It has many adverse side-effects. - For years now I've been punctilious in avoiding all drugs that I can; I'm certain that on the whole they do far, far more harm than good.

New stocks of its No 7 Protect and Perfect Beauty Serum, - thought to be 'anti-aging' - resulted in long queues at Boots stores across the country.

Shoppers queue for hours to buy 'elixir of youth' - Telegraph

Extract:

"Boots stores across the country were overwhelmed by middle-aged customers hungry for an anti-ageing cream that has been sold out for the past month.

More than 100 people queued outside the company's flagship store in Oxford Street waiting for its doors to open at 7am as new stocks of its No 7 Protect and Perfect Beauty Serum finally hit the shelves.

Stores in Nottingham, Manchester and Edinburgh also opened early to cope with the demand. Other branches reported long queues."

I've no doubt that creams like this are helpful, as are moisturisers, but to preserve youthful looks, the best thing to do is stop eating salt/sodium, or at any rate, to cut down on salt and salty food. - What are usually thought of as signs of aging, or diseases of aging, are actually not caused by the passing of the years at all; they are caused by sodium retention and its accompanying water retention, often coupled with dieting/'slimming', always a damaging procedure.

Should women take a contraceptive pill that stops periods?

Pill that ends periods sparks health row - Independent

Extracts:

"The imminent launch of the first contraceptive pill which promises to free women from the constraints of menstruation has pitched specialists on both sides of the Atlantic into a battle over what is "natural" and safe.

Lybrel, the first pill designed to eliminate the fertility cycle, putting an end to the mood swings and discomfort associated with periods, is expected to win a licence from the Food and Drug Administration in the US this month. In the UK, where it will be marketed as Anya, the US manufacturer Wyeth has applied for a licence which it expects to be granted next year.

The drug is designed to be taken continually unlike other oral contraceptives which are taken for 21 days a month with a break of seven days during which the woman has her period, preserving, albeit artificially, the biological rhythm.

The argument about whether the latest lifestyle choice to be offered to women is good for their health has already begun. Writing in the British Medical Journal, Paula Derry, a health psychologist from Baltimore, questions the wisdom of menstrual suppression and argues it is unnatural and potentially damaging.

Long-term safety has not been established and the argument that menstruation is obsolete is "illogical and unscientific", she says.

Her stance is supported by research in the US which has found many women view their periods as symbols of fertility and health. Rather than loathe them, they have a complex love-hate relationship with them. "

"Is menstruation obsolete?

Yes, says Professor Anna Glasier, head of sexual health, Lothian

"When I took the pill I took it continuously. Who wouldn't? Who would want periods? The idea that menstruation is normal is wrong. Since time dawned most women have been pregnant or breast feeding or post-menopausal - so they didn't have periods. Also, the idea that the period you have when you are on the pill is natural is also wrong. The pill turns the ovaries off and the period you have is a fake. The thing to worry about is the increased risk of deep vein thrombosis on the pill - but there is no evidence that a seven-day break each month makes any difference."

No, says Paula Derry, health psychologist, Maryland, US

"If it is more common today to have monthly periods than in the past that doesn't mean it is unnatural. We know that menstruation is what naturally occurs when women don't become pregnant. A menstruating woman is a healthy, probably fertile woman - whereas unhealthy, malnourished or massively stressed women are more likely to skip periods. Menstrual suppression is unnatural. A drug chronically over-rides the physiological changes associated with the menstrual cycle creating a hormonal environment that is not found in nature." "

A new osteoporosis drug

Osteoporosis drug offers women hope - Telegraph

Extracts:

"Women who are given an annual treatment for post-menopausal osteoporosis are less likely to suffer a broken hip or other fractures than those taking daily or weekly pills, according to a study to be published today.

Patients given a drip into the back of the hand of zoledronic acid, sold as Aclasta, cut the risk of hip breaks by 41 per cent and spinal breaks by 70 per cent compared to patients given a placebo.

Around half a million women in the UK take drugs such as alendronate and risedronate, known as bisphosphonates, in pill form daily or weekly to treat post-menopausal osteoporosis.

However, around half of patients stop taking the pills within a year.

The National Osteoporosis Society estimates that more than 60,000 hip and 120,000 spinal fractures take place each year in the UK.

Approximately one in five people die within three months of breaking their hip, which accounts for around 14,000 deaths annually.

Bone density is reduced in patients with osteoporosis, leading to greater risk of fractures.

Hormonal changes during the menopause put women at greater risk."

"Writing in The New England Journal of Medicine, lead researcher Prof Dennis Black, of the University of California, San Francisco, said: "During a three-year period, an annual infusion of zoledronic acid significantly reduced the risk of fracture at all key osteoporotic fracture sites including vertebral and hip fractures.

"A regimen of infusions once a year appears to ensure that patients will have a full treatment effect for at least 12 months.

"In contrast, many patients who receive prescriptions for oral bisphosphonates stop treatment, and most appear to be taking less than 80 per cent of their prescribed pills by 12 months."

The researchers said the infusion reduced the risk of spinal fractures by significantly more than the daily and weekly pills currently in use. Novartis, the company that manufactures the drug, hopes it will be available in the UK by the autumn."

"However, an abnormal heart rhythm, which can increase the risk of a stroke, was nearly three times more common among the 3,889 volunteers who took the Novartis drug.

The most common side effects with Aclasta were fever, muscle pain, flu-like symptoms, headache, and bone pain."

Diabetics warned about heart disease

Diabetics given heart risk alert - Telegraph

Extract:

"Almost two million Britons with diabetes are at risk of dying from heart disease, it was claimed yesterday.

The figure follows an assessment of how well cardiovascular risk factors are being managed in people with diabetes.

A report from the charity Diabetes UK said many diabetics are failing to reach target levels for key risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol. As a result, 80 per cent of the 2.2 million diabetics in Britain were likely to die from cardiovascular disease."

The best way to guard against heart disease is to give up eating salt and salty food. This also reduces obesity, lowers blood pressure and improves cholesterol levels.

Maggots have been used to treat wounds infected with MRSA.

Maggots used to counter MRSA superbug - Telegraph

Extract:

"Maggots have been successfully used to treat patients with the superbug MRSA, according to scientists.

In a preliminary trial, 12 of 13 patients with wounds infected with the potentially deadly bug were cured using larvae of the greenbottle fly Lucilia Sericata.

Because maggots eat dead and decaying flesh while leaving healthy tissue intact, "larval therapy" has been used by doctors since at least as early as the Napoleonic Wars, and the technique is still taught to US Army Special Forces medics.

The patients in the study, aged between 18 and 80, were cleared of the infection in an average of three weeks, compared to the 28 weeks needed for conventional treatment with anti-MRSA lotions.

Researchers used maggots to treat diabetic patients who had contracted MRSA in foot ulcers, but they said the findings were likely to apply to all patients who contracted the superbug in wounds.

Professor Andrew Boulton, of the School of Medicine at the University of Manchester, said: "Maggots are the world's smallest surgeons. In fact they are better than surgeons. They are much cheaper and work 24 hours a day.

"They remove the dead tissue and bacteria, leaving the healthy tissue to heal.

"Still, we were very surprised to see such a good result for MRSA."

Sunscreen is inadequate as protection from sun damage to the skin.

Experts warn against reliance on sunscreen - Telegraph

Extract:

"Using sunscreen is no substitute for covering up, doctors warned yesterday.

Protective clothing and hats are the still the best way to guard against skin cancer and the ageing effects of the sun, said experts writing in The Lancet medical journal.

Dr Stephan Lautenschlager, a skin specialist at Triemli Hospital in Zurich, and his colleagues carried out a review of sun protection strategies around the world.

They concluded: "Wearing sunprotective clothes and a hat and reducing sun exposure to a minimum should be preferred to sunscreens. Often this solution is deemed to be unacceptable and sunscreens could become the predominant mode of sun protection.

"Nevertheless, sunscreens should not be abused in an attempt to increase time in the sun."

Sunscreens had been shown to protect against sunburn and less serious forms of skin cancer, said the experts. However, there was no conclusive proof that they prevented the potentially deadly melanoma skin cancer.

The condition affects more than 8,100 men and women in Britain each year and causes almost 2,000 deaths."

There are many prescription drugs that tend to cause sun sensitivity, e.g. HRT, and 'slimming' also makes you more sensitive to the sun because it makes your skin thinner and weaker. - Lessen the strain on your skin by giving up 'slimming'/dieting forever! - You can easily lose a lot of excess weight by reducing your salt/sodium intake.

Inquest into the death of 14 year old Adam Rickwood in custody: a pre-sentencing report had said that he constituted "no risk of self-harm".

'No risk of self-harm': the official verdict on the youngest child to die in penal custody - The Independent

Extract:

"The youngest child to die in custody in Britain was not recognised as a suicide risk in reports by social workers, despite having been admitted to hospital nine times after harming himself.

An inquest into the death of Adam Rickwood was told yesterday that magistrates who sent the 14-year-old into custody were told in a pre-sentencing report that he constituted "no risk of self-harm".

The decision to send him to Hassockfield secure training centre near Consett, Co Durham, also drew on the results of a form completed by Lancashire County Council's youth offending team which indicated that Adam had had no contact with mental services, had received no kind of mental diagnosis and had never harmed himself.

In fact, the boy had been in hospital seven times after repeatedly overdosing on alcohol/drug mixes and cutting his wrists twice. Lancashire County Council's director of children's integrated services, Gill Rigg, said Adam's mental health record was the "key, relevant factor" in determining whether he should have been in custody at all. "I accept that was a very critical and essential piece of information that should have been on [the] form," she told the inquest at Chester-le-Street magistrates' court, Co Durham.

Adam's despair at being sent to a secure unit 150 miles from home was evident in his last letter to his mother and stepfather, Carol and John Pounder, which was read to the jury. "I need to be at home," he wrote. "If I could have the chance to be at home and with my family I will never get in trouble again in my life. I will do anything to be with you's [sic] but if people try to stop that I will flip."

The inquest heard that Adam, from Burnley, Lancashire, was a profoundly vulnerable child who had been known to social services from the age of three and had been referred to Lancashire's child and adolescent mental health unit.

He seemed to respond to those who found time for him, particularly his paternal grandfather, who was wheelchair-bound. "He used to lie in bed with granddad, watching TV [and] eating sweets [with him]. They shared everything," Mrs Pounder told the jury.

It was after his grandfather's death that Adam, then 11, entered a spiral of decline. He fell in with a group of older boys, took cannabis, was convicted of burglary and had been excluded from school."

You wonder how this unhappy young boy could possibly have been judged to be at "no risk of self-harm"...)o:

Some misguided scientists/nutritionists claim that eating soup could be the key to losing weight...)o: - How wrong they are!

Why eating soup could be the key to losing weight - The Independent

Extract:

"Eating soup with a meal could be the answer to the obesity crisis, according to scientists in the US.

People who fill their stomachs with soup at the start of a meal eat less overall, research shows, and rather than piling on the pounds, the addition of the extra course can actually help people lose weight.

The soup regime is recommended by researchers at Pennsylvania State University, who tested it on volunteers. They found that when participants ate a first course of soup before a lunch entrée they reduced the total calorie intake of their meal by a fifth compared with those who ate the entrée alone.

But they stressed that the soup must be low-calorie. Adding a creamy soup to the meal would be likely to have the opposite effect and boost the total calorie intake and lead to weight gain.
The research, supported by the National Institutes of Health, was presented to the Experimental Biology conference in Washington, yesterday.

Barbara Rolls, professor of nutrition and co-author of the study, said it had built on earlier work into the role of low-calorie soup as a way of reducing food intake.: "Earlier work suggests that chunky soup may be the most filling type, so the purpose of this study was to determine whether different forms of soup might have different effects on food intake.""

It both shocks and bemuses me that time and again, as in this case, researchers count calories and do arithmetic and then make claims about weight loss! - Where is the weight loss? - Where is any evidence for their claim? - How can they claim to be scientists when there is still no evidence at all that reducing calorie intake reduces obesity?

The whole of their research here seems to be about calories, not about weight loss. - Weight loss is so very easily achieved by simply reducing the amount of salt (sodium) that you eat. - You can eat lots more calories if you wish and yet you will still lose weight - provided that you eat less salt. To advise people to eat soup as a means of losing weight is very poor advice indeed because soup tends to be high in salt!

(People sometimes wonder how many calories there are in salt. - Actually, there are no calories in salt.)

Obesity and the Salt Connection

All that is necessary to curb the growing incidence of obesity is to tell the truth about what causes it! - Obesity is NOT caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, frequently because of taking prescribed medications, especially steroids such as prednisolone, prednisone and HRT, and anti-depressants such as amitriptyline. (When doctors prescribe drugs that cause sodium retention and water retention they should warn the patient not to eat salt, or food containing salt, while taking the medication. When they do not give this warning, the inevitable consequence is considerable weight gain.)

Read here about the groups of people who are vulnerable to salt:
vulnerable groups

Obesity can be easily reduced by seriously reducing your salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables. - It is important NOT to restrict calories. - 'Slimming' or 'dieting' is unnecessary, ineffective and often harmful.

Abortion in England for pregnant Irish teenager whose unborn baby has a rare brain condition which is fatal?

Irish court battle over teenager's abortion right - Guardian

Extract:

"A pregnant 17-year-old in state care in Ireland began a court battle yesterday to be allowed to travel to England for an abortion, as the country's failure to resolve the ambiguities in its abortion laws threatened to erupt into a constitutional crisis.

The teenager, who is four months into the pregnancy, is seeking an abortion because the baby has got a rare brain condition and will not live more than three days after birth, she has been told.

Identified only as Miss D, the teenager has been in the care of Ireland's health service executive (HSE), since February.

The government agency has overruled her wish for an abortion in Britain. The young woman's father is absent and her mother's behaviour had led to earlier court proceedings.

Abortion in this predominantly Catholic country, where the influence of the church has gradually weakened, remains illegal, with the ban on it written into the constitution. Abortions can only be performed if there is a substantial risk to the mother's life, which includes the threat of suicide. The law does not permit abortion on grounds of foetal abnormality.

Most women seeking an abortion go to England for the operation. Successive complex cases have led to hearings at the European court of human rights and several divisive national referenda."

"Mary Muldowney, of the Alliance for Choice, which campaigns for safe, free, legal abortion in Ireland, has accused the government of hypocrisy. "The HSE must retract their callous approach to [Miss] D's tragic case and facilitate her choice for a termination," Ms Muldowney said. "She cannot afford any further delay and the Irish people will not thank the HSE or the government for again brutalising a young woman in their name.""

"Doctors say the baby suffers from anencephaly, a condition where the front part of the brain is missing. The condition is detected through blood screening. Such children are normally blind, deaf, and unconscious. The high court in Dublin has been told that life expectancy would be somewhere between several hours and, at the maximum, three days."

Since 2002, three teenagers in care have been allowed to go abroad for terminations.

But the republic's abortion laws have never been fully clarified. As long ago as 1992, a supreme court judge warned that the failure to introduce proper legislation was "inexcusable"."

Gene therapy aimed at restoring sight for 30,000 people with Leber's congenital amaurosis.

Gene therapy aimed at restoring sight for 30,000 people - Guardian

Extract:

"British scientists are to launch the world's first clinical trials of a controversial gene therapy to cure childhood blindness.

Researchers will test the treatment on volunteers with a rare inherited form of blindness, in which a single defective gene causes the retina to degenerate and eventually stop working as the child grows up.

The condition, called Leber's congenital amaurosis, affects one in 80,000 in Britain. Children born with the defective gene are often completely blind by their 20s. If the trials are a success, it could revolutionise the treatment of more than 100 inherited forms of blindness that affect up to 30,000 people in Britain.

Patients taking part in the trial will be injected with a virus modified to carry a correct version of the faulty gene.

Once inside the eye, the virus ferries the healthy gene into the cells that make up the retina, halting and even reversing the damage caused.

The phase 1 trials are designed to assess the safety and efficacy of the treatment in 12 patients and will be carried out by the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London and nearby Moorfields Eye Hospital. The safety of the treatment will be under particular scrutiny, following a gene therapy trial four years ago in which two children being treated for a rare immune disorder called Scid (severe combined immunodeficiency) developed leukaemia. Their cancers arose when a virus used to deliver healthy genes accidentally led to tumour-promoting genes."

Drawing on 40,000 years of knowledge, Aborigines will teach 10 overweight young Britons how to survive on bush tucker in the series Fat Teens Can't Hunt.

The participants will have to swap burgers, chips and pizzas for lizards, mangrove worms and charred kangaroo. If they fail to find food in the wild, they will go hungry.

The programme, due to start filming in the Northern Territory in August, will feature five boys and five girls, aged 16 to 19. The six one-hour episodes are expected to be screened later this year or early next year."

Well, if these young people live on the food they catch, they will lose weight, because fresh food contains only low concentrations of salt/sodium. - I hope they are not going to be given salt to use in cooking it!

The production team clearly think that increased exercise will help the young people to become less obese. - It won't. - Obesity in children and young people is almost always caused by eating food with too much salt in it. - They can easily lose excess weight (which is actually fluid retention) by eating less salt, and, preferably, plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables.

Safety First! - Guardian

Would your child know what to do if a friend was choking, or had fallen off their bike? Lucy Atkins reports on a scheme that takes 10-year-olds into casualty to learn how to avoid accidents and save lives.

Extract:

"The year sixes certainly seem positive after a morning in casualty. "Before today," says Bryony Jones, 11, "if something had happened I'd have been scared to do anything in case it was wrong. Now I think I wouldn't panic - I'd be much more likely to help." Her friend Chloe Ebsworth, 11, agrees. "I learned loads. Regular aspirin use may raise stroke risk for healthy people

Regular aspirin use may raise stroke risk for healthy people - Guardian

Extract:

"People who regularly take aspirin to ward off strokes in later life could be doing themselves more harm than good, according to a new study. Researchers have found that the proportion of people over 75 who have suffered bleeding strokes has jumped ten-fold in the past 25 years, reflecting the increased use of antithrombotic drugs such as aspirin and warfarin.

There are two main types of stroke: one occurs when the blood flow to the brain is blocked by a clot; the other happens when a blood vessel bursts and bleeds into the brain. Antithrombotic drugs can reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks in people who are known to be at risk of the diseases, because they thin the blood and lessen the chance of developing blood clots. But thinner blood also raises the risk of bleeding."

'Bleeding' strokes occur when the blood vessel walls are thin. This is usually caused by excess blood volume, in turn caused by salt sensitivity. - You can reduce your risk of this kind of stroke by eating less salt and salty food. - See http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/conditions.html

Will there soon be a cure for everything? - The Independent

Extract:

"A raft of new drugs are awaiting approval or in the final stages of development that could transform cancer care. Professor Karol Sikora of Imperial College, London, says the proportion of patients with cancer who die of the disease could fall from its present level of two thirds to a quarter during the next 20 years.

But as medicine leaps forward, the NHS will struggle to keep up. The drugs in the pipeline will not be cheap. Herceptin costs more than £20,000 a year and patients have gone to court to force Primary Care Trusts to pay for it.

The next generation of cancer drugs may cost even more - up to £100,000 a year. If they can be convincingly shown to extend life or improve its quality, they will generate demand, even if the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice) deems them too expensive for the NHS.
Obesity, smoking, loss of sexual desire and Alzheimer's disease are all targeted by new drugs already licensed, or are about to be, which will find a ready market."

Can't say I'm a fan of this belief in the curative properties of drugs...)o: - Steroids, HRT, tricyclic antidepressants and many other drugs are actually the CAUSE of most instances of extreme obesity and its other attendant grave illnesses - hypertension, diabetes, stroke, cancer, etc. See http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/steroids.html

Good nutrition coupled with avoidance of all avoidable prescription drugs and all avoidable salt and salty food and junk additives, and strictly avoiding any dieting/'slimming', makes the best combination medicine to promote a long and healthy life.

At last! - A newspaper article about fat people that does not mock them or tell them to eat less and stop being lazy!

Obesity: It's time to stop the fat attack - The Independent

Extracts:

"Myths about fatness abound. US academic Paul Campos, author of The Obesity Myth, debunks many of them. For instance, the idea that Americans are getting fatter because of fast food is questionable. "The heaviest consumers of fast food in this country are single men in their 20s who weigh less than the average American," says Campos.

Another common misconception is that fat people are lazy. Recent evidence from the Early Bird study in Plymouth, which is tracking the weight and activity of 300 children, found no link between how much kids do and what they weigh."

"Obesity is harmful, but so are lots of things we do to ourselves. And while obese people do harm to themselves but not to others, they do not deserve the negative press and moral vilification that is so widespread. Fatism is just about the only irrational prejudice that is still deemed acceptable. Let's get rid of it. "

Nice to see an article that is sympathetic to fat people. - But if you are fat and would like to lose weight, here is how to do it:

Give up dieting/'slimming'! - Dieting does not work and is harmful.
Eat good meals, including plenty of fruit and freshly cooked vegetables.

Pistachios lower risk of heart disease and problems with cholesterol levels

Pistachios lower risk of heart disease - Telegraph

Extract:

"Pistachios in the diet can significantly reduce cholesterol and help prevent narrowing of the arteries, according to researchers.

One or two handfuls of the nuts can make a big enough difference to lower the risk of heart disease, say scientists.

Volunteers who ate three ounces of pistachios a day for one month lowered their total blood cholesterol by 8.4 per cent. Levels of "bad" cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), fell by 11.6 per cent. The balance between LDL and "good" cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), was also changed. Participants on the pistachio diet had less LDL relative to HDL after four weeks.

HDL is protective rather than harmful and lower ratios between the two kinds of cholesterol are considered to be healthy. The volunteers were given pistachios as a daily snack and also had them incorporated into other foods.

The researcher Sarah Gebauer, from Pennsylvania State University, said: "Pistachio amounts of 1.5 ounces and three ounces - one to two handfuls - reduced risk for cardiovascular disease by significantly reducing LDL cholesterol levels and the higher dose significantly reduced lipoprotein ratios."

The simplest and most effective way to lower cholesterol levels and to lower the risk of heart disease is to stop eating salt and salty food. This benefits health in many other ways too. - See http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/conditions.html
